South Florida Mole Kingsnake
I thought that I would post this photo since this is a snake you rarely see or hear too much about.........These snakes have only been described to science since 1987 (Price). The reason for this is that they are very secretive and are fossorial in habit, spending much of their time burried in leaf litter below the suface, and foraging mostly at night. They are only known from several counties in central/ southern Florida. The one pictured was hatched from a friend of mine,..... he was driving home one afternoon, and saw a snake crossing the dirt road in front of him,.....he pulled over and kept a few other cars from running it over as well. He then was able to capture the snake and soon noticed that it was gravid (pregnant) ,......it happened to be an adult female S.F.Mole King. He took the snake home and two weeks later she layed several eggs. He incubated them and approx. 60 days later, he sold me one. The female was caught just south of Arcadia, in DeSoto County, Fl...............unfortunately, two years later, when she reached sexual maturity, I gave her to a friend of mine for a breeder loan, were she later died of unknown causes. I purchased her back in July of '98, she was 32" long in this photo, and was two years old..............................D. Mong
