    In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

    Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

    Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

    Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

I'm not really sure but I think it's the one that's on the bottom of the pile, at least that's how I think tortoises breed?

Well the larger one is definitely male, and I'd put the smaller one at about 90% male, but if you are both confident that it's a pair, more power to you. Sounds like the transaction is done already, anyways.

A tortoise mounting another tortoise is obviously not a way to determine sex. Males mount males all the time, females mount males, females mount females, etc.

Which one do we 'think' is the female?

In plastron pic, you can see the one on the left's tail is curled around to the right and is certainly male; it's hard to make out the one on the right, but I think you can see its (short) tail tip on the left side(?)

...smaller one...

Where do you think the tail tip is?

Correct, but that's not that short of a tail, and it's only about a 5" animal. Hermanns commonly look like females until they are about 3.5-4" length. I have a dozen here that I'm undecided on their sex at 4" size, but that one in the pic would definitely be sold as a male if it was in my hands.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I've got about 60 adult hermanns here. I'd bet good money that that animal looks a lot more "male" in a year. Not my deal, doesn't affect me.

Just to clarify, these are what we are seeing as the tail lengths?

You're probably right - the base thickness makes it seem much longer than the other by comparison than it really is.

Correct. In a mature 7-8-9" hermanns female, the tail will rarely extend beyond the plastron (bottom shell) at all from an angle like this. If it is extending past it at this (still relatively small) size, it's almost certainly male, with much more tail growth to come in the next year.

I was trying to be funny... I guess I missed the mark. Yes its possible its a male, however I really doubt it considering they both xpressed for me under the hose. But as with all, time will tell.

That would be impressive if you got them to mate while holding both of them.:)
