In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

I received an email from a perspective customer by the name of Jon Zuckerman. He was interested in some geckos we offered for sale on K.S. Our terms are very clear, prepayment and that includes freight. He was looking to pay us via paypal. He indicated that his monies were tied up in his paypal account.
" I am not going to try to persuade you to use paypal but I wanted you to know for the future Paypal is a third party the same way a bank is. There is no credit line offered. It is just like cash sitting in a bank. I pay you through paypal and it clears in 1 day just as I would send you a check and you would wait 3-4 days to clear. " The above quote email is what I received from him after I indicated that we must have " the cash in advance"

I am unfamiliar with paypal, but was wondering if this information is accurate. He told us that he could not access the account to get the cash to pay us in advance. Only through paypal. I finally after several emails indicated that we regret that we cannot alter our terms. My question is simple. for arguments sake if the animal died 2 months after I shipped them to him. Would he still be able to have the funds re-credited to his account. Whatever help could be provided would be appreciated . JERRY TRESSER

Jerry,

PAYPAL is a very useful tool in the Online buisness world. You can get all the information on their terms and policies via their web site. http://www.paypal.com Paypal is a secure, easy method of payment. It protects both the seller and buyer.

Hi Jerry,
If I have money in my Paypal account I can access it and purchase with it several different ways:
1) I can have the money sent directly to my checking or savings account that I have listed on my Paypal account.
2) I can use the Paypal Visa debit card that either allows me to make purchases with the money in my account or I can go to an ATM and take the money out with the card from my account. (If I have the card of course)
3) I can use Paypal to purchase directly from someone who is willing to accept it and is willing to open an account with Paypal.
(may merchants are doing this because of the convience)

As far as protection on the sale I believe that any problem purchases have to be reported in a 30 day period if any chargeback is to be considered and there has to be proof provided. Along this line it also helps that you and you buyer are certified (I think they call it) as far as proving your address and bank accounts are legit. This gives you even more protection as the seller.

I've used Paypal for quite a long time now with 100s of sales and purchases and have never had a problem. I'm sure that some people have had problems but my experience is that it's safer and cheaper then a merchant account and because they also let you accept e-checks I found out that although the e-check has to clear the account just like a check would in any account, If the check bounces, you don't have to pay a bad check charge like you would to a regular bank. Just don't ship until the e-check clears.
I hope this helps you out.

Jerry.... this doesn't sound too Kosher!
PayPal is like an unbiased third-party.... you give them your bank info, and after it's checked out, you become VERIFIED! When someone sends you money, it goes directly from their credit card or checking or savings account.... right into PAYPAL's account.... then PAYPAL pays YOUR account! If they send you an e-check, that is just like a regular check, and it will NOT clear for at least 4-6 BUSINESS DAYS! Then, PayPal will put it in your account.... from PAYPAL's account!
If there is a problem, the buyer AND seller HAVE TO BE VERFIED, FOR PAYPAL TO DO ANYTHING! If they send you money through PayPal and they ask you to ship to an UNVERIFIED ADDRESS.... and YOU DO SEND IT?.... if something happens, because it might have been a stolen credit card, or whatever the case might be.... you're stuck!
I, personally, have used PayPal exclusively for about 2 years now, and I've NEVER had a problem! If BOTH parties are VERIFIED.... things go SO SMOOTHLY, it's like them just handing you CASH (minus the 3%.... lol)!! But, that's also when PayPal WILL intervene if one party accuses the other of a misdeed of some kind.... then, it's like anything else, you have to PROVE IT! PayPal DOES have the capability of FREEZING your entire account if they want (I think).... same as your bank.... to me, PayPal is the best thing since perforated toilet paper!

When customers start playing games with payment, trying to GET OVER.... I just politely tell them to take their money elsewhere....! I don't want the headaches!.... Don't play games with others' money!

I could be wrong about the capabilities PayPal has, but, I think I'm pretty close!

Paypal users...be careful. I have used Paypal for years but recently found out first hand that funds in your Paypal account can get tied up instantly leaving you no way to receive them. For instance, someone recently got into my Paypal account and added an Address and a Credit Card. I noticed it right away, reported it to Paypal, and now my account is restricted. Want to know what I can do with my account while it is restricted?

From Paypal site: What can I do while my account access is limited?

During limited account access, you CAN continue to use the following features:
-receive payments
-place logos into your auction listings or on your website
-update your account information

What can't I do while my account access is limited?

During limited account access, you CANNOT:
-send or request money
-electronically transfer funds to and from your account
-close your account

I simply do not like the fact that Paypal will continue to allow funds into your account but will not allow you to receive them while the account is limited.

And whether it is valid or not, I found this site about Paypal as well.Paypal Warning

I felt Paypal has been great for several years now but I am seriously considering whether I will continue to use it.

Also, I contacted Paypal and found out that they have the right to place limited access on accounts at any time they feel necessary. And they may or may not lift Limited Access until they decide to do so. So my account may be limited for any period of time. When asked about the funds in my account, Paypal said it holds those funds in case there is a dispute. I was told I could have those funds sent to me via a check but I would not be able to get the check until six months from now as long as noone disputes those funds sent to me.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't like knowing that my money could be held by Paypal for six months or not get it at all.

Take this scenario. Someone pays you thru Paypal in the amount of $1000. You receive the money and leave it in your Paypal account. You send the animal and then Paypal limits access to your account. The funds are there, only you can not get them. And what if the buyer disputes those funds with Paypal? Your funds are tied up and then you may not be able to get them for at least six months. So you are then out of the animal and the money(for the time being). I simply do not like the way that sounds.

 scary situation..
happy thanks giving to all!
been using paypals for a while now and am happy with the service for the most part..what i dont like is this..if you pay off a big purchase in installments after 30days if the purchase goes wrong there is no way to collect back those funds..
i often buy groups of expensive snakes totalling over 1000.00 which my sellers are so gracious to take payments on..if something happens and im over the 30 day mark i have no recourse..thankfully i limit myself to less then 30 days net on seller i dont know so that prevents most of the hassles..
recently though i got into a dispute over some funds on caging and it turned into a major hassle...no delivery on the product was wanted by myself and i had to go to great lengths to try and recoup what was paid..meanwhile my cages are not good quality that i had already paid for in cash upon delievery and no help from paypals.( two sets of the same caging if this is confusing)
just another glitch in the system..be careful of payments.

PERFORATED TOILET PAPER!!! No ****? When did this come about? I've never heard of such a thing. Forget PayPal, I wanna know where to get this new type of Toilet Paper!

I feel I need to add my $.02 here.

My sister opened an account with Paypal in order to purchase some sugar gliders over the web. She had instructed them to use her credit card to make the payment, but Paypal drained funds straight from her account instead. Fortunately she was able to manage, but this mistake caused her a good deal of grief.

A good friend of mine makes and sells little dragon figurines. She uses Paypal as well. The other night she complained to me that Paypal wouldn't let her take her money out of her Paypal account because she didn't have atleast $40(Canadian) in it.

Things like that are reasons why I refuse to use Paypal. I'm also not about to give my bank account number to any company just to pay for something with my credit card.

Incidentally, did you know Paypal has a class action suit against it? Just do a Google Search on Paypal and you'll find more info than you ever wanted to know...

thanks but

I think its a bit to hazardous for me. I like cash in hand. We have terminals that allow us to take credit cards, but when it comes to Reptiles, I have reservations. Paypal may be fine , but in this case he insisted that he could only pay that way.

Thanks for the information from all of you, I only can say that using Paypal is not for me. JERRY TRESSER ps. you may want to check out our site with our terms. www.jtresser. com ALSO, THE VERY BEST FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON.

I have used paypal quite a bit in that last few years. The only problem I have ever had with them is when my credit card expired and I went to put my new credit card on my account. Since the only thing that changed was the experation date their little computer said that the card number was already being used. It took quite a few phone calls and talking to a manager before they got that straightned out.

I did just recently make a pretty big purchase, and I had to make sure that it came out of my credit account instead of my bank account. So I called to see how to do that.
On the very last screen before you actually send the money there is some words that are highlighted alternate funds if you click that it will show your bank account and any other accounts you have on there. Just click wich one you want to use.
If I hadnt found out about that. I probably would have made the same mistake your sister did, and would have drained my bank account. Im not saying that paypal didnt mess up. Im just saying what I found out.

I dont care for paypal at all!

Here was my situation:
I opened my paypal account to purchase some geckos from a guy who insisted on using paypal. I proceeded to put X amount of money into my paypal account via my checking account. I waited. I waited. I waited. FINALLY 10 days later, the money showed up in my paypal account. Shortly thereafter i recieved a nasty letter from my bank saying that i was bouncing checks! I quickly drove to the bank to straighten things out. When the banker lady pulled up my checking account on her little computer screen it showed that paypal had taken X amount of $$ from my account THREE TIMES. I had not planned on this size of transaction and therefore had been bouncing checks because of paypals screwup. Thankfully, the banker lady had used paypal before and said that they had done a similar thing to her once. She helped me transfer adequate funds from my savings to cover the damage paypal had done, and removed all my "bounced check" fees. When i got home, i emailed paypal about it (very nasty letter it was) and 3-4 business days later they deposited the funds back into my checking account. During this whole 2 week ordeal NOWHERE did the other two transactions of $X show up in my paypal account. I have no clue where it went.

My opinion of paypal? USE at your own RISK.

AFTER SEEING

Seans link to the PayPal problems, I am glad that I did not follow through with this person, insisting to use Paypal to make a purchase. I work to hard to have " third party interventions" of any kind. Aside from which if the person was seriously interested in purchasing, he could have paid us as we stated in our terms. I think that using Paypal is a problem waiting to happen. Its just a question of time before someone who knows how to play the game better than you will take some unsuspecting provider with the merchandise and have you tied up in knots for months. Its just not worth it. Secondly, their seems to be an overabundant amount of litigation. What would happen if paypal went bankrupt? They are not a bank nor are they insured! JERRY TRESSER

Just to buck the trend here.........

I resisted using Paypal for the longest time, but close to a year ago I decided to set up an account with them. I had had the occasional request to have people pay via Paypal, and setting up the banner ads and such on this site, it seemed like a reasonable thing to do.

So far, I have had absolutely no problems. Setting up buttons for payments, even doing an entire shopping cart page is easy and effective to do. I have received payments and sent payments, as well as transferred funds from Paypal to my checking account with no glitches whatsoever. The few times I have tried to contact Paypal about some question I may have, I have been responded to within a few hours.

Personally I think anyone doing business on the net should have Paypal or an equivalent payment method as a viable option. The more ways you offer a customer to be able to pay, the better off everyone involved will be. It's all about convenience. NEVER make it difficult for someone to send you money.

Well, the OBVIOUS answer to all this is....

DON'T LEAVE MONEY IN YOUR PAYPAL ACCOUNT!

Every time I get a payment through PayPal.... I IMMEDIATELY withdraw it and put it in MY checking or savings account....

To date, I have had 64 "unique" buyers, and about 140 purchases (all together) made through PayPal in the last year.... with NEVER a problem??

I STILL say.... if you use PayPal properly, in the way it was intended.... you shouldn't have a problem. It MIGHT even fix the problems you DO come across....

As far as the PayPal link in the thread above.... I could give you that same scenario about almost every bank in the nation! Nothing ever runs smoothly forever? You are BOUND to come across problems from time to time, as in anything else.... you just fix the problem and then move on....

YOU are in FULL CONTROL of your PayPal account.... you can't call them to tell them to take your money out of a particular crdit card?? YOU HAVE TO DO THAT ON THE SITE!

....Neil

I have to second Neil's post. I have 71 "Unique" buyers and well over 200 transactions all done through PAYPAL and not one problem. Paypal has been a secure, easy, safe, method of payment and will continue to be for me and many other users. The only times I have personally seen anyones funds be frozen is if a accusation or claim is made through paypal and the seller can not show proof of the sale, shipping etc. then the funds are frozen and confiscated/sent back to the accuser but only after the case is prooven.

I have over 100 Verified Buyers with well over 250 transactions through Paypal but am still unhappy that my funds in Paypal are not accessible. Neil, I basically do what you do...I withdraw funds into my bank account as soon as possible after they are transferred. But I have left some funds in their and right now I can not access them.

Answer me this-how many, if any banks, freeze your entire bank account because they feel the need to do so. And if banks do, how many allow money to still be deposited but not withdrawn?

Are you kidding??? That's big business at it's FINEST! Look at all the large corporations that will still allow people to buy their stock when they KNOW they are going BANKRUPT TOMORROW!! How many banks have you seen that will take DEPOSITS the day BEFORE they go under??
They KNOW they're protected??
Your scenario is exactly why I don't leave anything in my account.... as everyone keeps saying.... THEY ARE NOT A BANK!, they are only a "glorified liaison" for your money.... when your money comes in??.... TAKE IT OUT!!....

....Neil

yes NEIL, but

banks are insured through FDIC, Paypal is not. Unless you have more than $ 100 thousand your fully covered if a bank goes under. In our particular case, we have as I indicated in an earlier post all the necessary terminals for accepting credit cards. This person basically indicated that his funds could only be used through Paypal and that we he was unable to pull the monies out

Here is another email from him "Sorry about that Jerry. I got a bit behind at work and really have not had the opportunity to think about it. I really only have time off on the weekends. If I can't use some of the funds that are in my paypal account I will have to pass. Let me know, Jon" I told him to get the money out of Paypal and send it to me. He indicated that he could not access the money, and I intern indicated that we could not ship under his terms! We parted amicably, but I wont do business with him in the future. It just did not feel right. JERRY TRESSER
