In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. A proposal and query concerning a moderator here.

Do we finally need a moderator in this forum and/or chat room?

Personally, I do not believe we need a moderator here on the Forum itself. Like Rich stated an another post, when threads start getting too bad someone will usually report them to one of the Fauna moderators. Also, I think that the vast majority of the Leopard Gecko Forum members are mature, responsible, and respectful enough that 'flames and flares' don't get too out of hand.

Now, we may need a moderator for chats... I missed last night's chat but heard it was an OK evening with no problems. If it came to the point we needed a moderator for chat nights, then I don't see why we couldn't work out some kind of rotating "sargeant at arms" where it would not have to be the burden and/or power struggle of only one person. Or at least someone that really could be completely objective, and not directly associated with Leopard Geckos or the members for this particular Forum.

You could not pay me enough to be a forum moderator on any kind. I value my reputation and the relationships here on Fauna too much to be put in a position that would put them in that kind of jeopardy. Just look what Webslave and the other mods have to put up with... accusations of not being fair, cry babies that don't know when to quit, having to be baby-sitters, having to suspend and fine members... NO THANKS!

Unfortunately Marcia, that attitude is exactly what makes a good moderator! Or leader of any kind. heheheh. It's a sense of duty and not a "I wanna be leader" that makes the best leaders. However I know you honestly dont want to do it and I still think we don't need a moderator on the forum at this time.

But a moderator for future chats with guest speakers would be a good idea. Not for the "enforcer" duties of a mod, but to moderate the "question and answer", keeping track of the lineup of questioners and calling on people in turn, etc.

Heck I'll vote for ya Gregg. You know I can be bought - just send me your best lil hatchling there :D

moderator vs. facilitator

I guess there is slight difference in the term moderator and facilitator. I do not mind continuing to volunteer facilitating the chat schedules, topics, line-up, etc. I just would not want the "enforcer duties" like kicking someone off the Chat Forum and making enemies. :duck01:

how about a luke warm moderator? one that just reminds people of the rules, and locks the thread and reports it to a moderator so they can find problems more easily and deal with it.

aHH the politics!!

Again I was in the chat earlier today for a brief period. Racial jokes and other vulgarity! It needs a mod!!!

With all due respect, in such a case, I would not need a mod. I find racial slurs detestable and I would step in and say something no matter why I was there, or what my title.
There is a short list of stuff which I feel by virtue of being a person and an American, that I can step in and speak my mind, and racial slurs are definitely on the list.

Ahhhhh

You wouldn't need a mod? Oh so the behavior would just automatically stop just because you stated your feelings on it? Thats a nice thought. I think your actually being a tad assumptive and nieve here in a couple ways. First in that I would just sit back and listen to such repulsive talk without saying something, and second that after me just mentioning that it wasn't acceptable it would just cease from that point on. I actually wish it was that simple!

Chad, you did not read what I wrote. I did not say I could stop it; I said I would feel compelled to address it without waiting for a mod. You are implying that you tried to take care of the situation yourself without notifying anyone prior, exactly as I would have done; what happened when you said this behavior was unacceptable?

I don't think a mod is a BAD idea. So long as it is someone who is impartial. However I think modding should be thread based, so that one could talk about something ON TOPIC, and have serious discussion that doesnt turn into a flame war. Doesnt have to be the whole board, or the chat room. I wouldnt mind having chat be a bit more directed last few I went to were a bit all over the place

Didn't mean to read into your statement Lucille. When I did mention that it wasn't right it was basically another joke. Even before the idiotic remarks were made a couple of people in the room I think knew they were comming and decided to leave. Now if they were leaving because they didn't want to be involved or if they were leaving for other reasons I am not certain . I was in there a whopping 1 minute before this behavior caused me to exit. I enjoy using the chat room. Its great to get instant feedback from people with the same interests. Its just too bad the conversations always tend to gravitate towards the negative or the obscene.

I really don't think that we need a moderator in the Forums. I think things have been handled properly the way they have been so far. Having that report button is good enough in the forums.

But, the chat area is a different story. I personally haven't seen anything happening that shouldn't be, but I only spend a little time in the chat rooms. If people are being offended, and if things are really this out of control, then something needs to be done.

I vote yes on a moderator for the Chat Room

Well I am certainly no prude, by any stretch of the imagination, but if there are people bringing the chat discussions to objectional lewd and profane levels, which are repulsing the majority of people there, then I will have no other choice but to act against them. A little bit of playful banter is OK, but when taken to any extremes, it is not appropriate anywhere on my site. Well maybe in the HELL forum, but I don't really go in there myself......

So it is up to you all. If you see something like that, report it to me by capturing a log of the discussion. If you feel that you don't want to be a tattle tale, then consider that you are possibly jeopardizing the chat system completely by not helping police it. I can check the log files of every chat on the system, and if I find the need to do that and find that this is a RAMPANT problem, then I will have no other choice but to just end the chats completely rather then allow that to run out of control.

So, point blank, help nip it, or lose it.

May I suggest that if someone becomes offended by the subject matter in the chat room that they first speak up and ask people to cool it, before running off and reporting? What is offensive to one person is not necessarily offensive to all. But if you speak up and say you're not happy with the conversation, MOST times / MOST people will say "oh! sorry!" and tone it down immediately. (This is called self-moderation and it still gets my vote. Until it proves beyond hope of not working... :) ) I've done this myself a lot of times in chat rooms, since there are subjects that bother me that dont bother most people, and usually people are considerate of my feelings. If not, there is always that other option of clicking on the little X up there in the corner.

However, if the warning goes unheeded, report away. WebSlave, just please remember that people have different ideas about what is offensive. Good luck making those judgement calls. :D

I agree with Laura...People have different ways of judging whats "racy" and whats not. A lot of us are just cutting up b/c we know eachother(well in the chat) and don't really mean anything by it. IF it IS offending people then they should speak up before saving the chat log and reporting. IF someone tells me to stop, i'll stop. A warning would be great before getting reported to webslave...lol...so yeah if you feel uncomfortable about what is being talked about in the chat, or you feel its inappropriate just let us know and we will discontinue talking about it!

Thanks

Matt Manry

I am right there with Laura's position... every person feels offended to different things. I am sure there is even someone who feels offended by me even typing that.

Now, In reference to the "event" that Chad is mentioning... I was there as were a couple others which will remain nameless. I did not make the remark to which he found offensive but at the same time you (Chad) did nothing but type the word "no" to which the publisher of the statement probably didn't even know what you were referring to, I didn't! I am not defending the joke teller by all means but unlike the 2 other people that chose to leave prior to the punchline, you didn't even though there was plenty of opportunity.

If your in a car you know is heading to go over a cliff, do you stay in the car till it goes over the edge or jump out before? You might answer that with a "DUH" but thats exactly what happened.

I am for having this forum split in 2 where one part would be unmoderated for those of us who don't feel like having what we read censored and the other that is censored. Same for the chats... of course there is the option of creating ones own room, which I feel will probably be used more often.
