I am for having this forum split in 2 where one part would be unmoderated for those of us who don't feel like having what we read censored and the other that is censored. Same for the chats... of course there is the option of creating ones own room, which I feel will probably be used more often.
Isn't this what the Hell forum was created for?

Pesonally I don't think an additional moderator is needed exclusively for the leo forum. Besides the all encompassing scandal, I don't really think that the leo forum is that bad that we need our own "babysitter".

As far as the chat goes, I will admit that it can go WAY off topic. :>off_to<: While I believe a "moderator" may be a good idea to "steer" the topics into the proper direction, I also don't wan't "thought police" to lay down the hammer on people who may stray. I do not condone offensive materials within the chats. Racial jokes have no place in this forum, I agree. I also agree that common sense must dictate what some of us (myself included) discuss that may turn "off color".

Many of us rely on this site to unwind from our normal stress filled lives. We share a passion for our animals that binds us together, to the point that we act silly, sophmoric, even stupid. To be honest, I wouldn't have it any other way. I think most will concede that while we can go off topic in here, in the end we are all geeks who spend way too much time, money, and thoughts upon these amazing little lizards. I for one do not want to offend anyone. In the same respect I don't want to be made to feel that I can't be myself because I may offend someone else. Let us use our heads. Let us be considerate of others among us who may be more sensitive to things that we may not be sensitive about.

Rich, in my opinion, don't make more rules, just enforce the existing ones as you always have done. :hehe:

Well Gene I really shouldn't have to bail out of the room! Its that simple. What I answered no to was a question regarding peoples skin color and if they wanted to hear the off colored jokes. Asking that question before stating the slur implies two things on the part of the one who asked it. First that they themselves knew they could possibly offend someone. Second that they knew the thing they were about to say was not appropriate! Its that simple.
Now, In reference to the "event" that Chad is mentioning... I was there as were a couple others which will remain nameless. I did not make the remark to which he found offensive but at the same time you (Chad) did nothing but type the word "no" to which the publisher of the statement probably didn't even know what you were referring to, I didn't! I am not defending the joke teller by all means but unlike the 2 other people that chose to leave prior to the punchline, you didn't even though there was plenty of opportunity.

The racial attack was clear and left no question to its intent . The joke stated," what do you call a ----- kid on a new bike? A thief." Thats OFFENSIVE! DEGRADING! DESTRUCTIVE! But I should have to leave? I understand now. You claim not to be defending the "joke/racial slur teller? So how exactly should I take your car driving off the cliff analogy? Sounds like to me unless I'm a liberal anything goes type of individual I just don't belong in that room. I guess I should have known better! Also what I mentioned in my earlier post is not some isolated incident. Its not acceptable to stereotype people based on there race or anything else for that matter. Its not acceptable for people to speak about all manner of human sexuality in a graphic and vulgar way in a leopardgecko chat room! It never ceases to amaze me how the moral high ground is always under attack. I guess as time goes on and the moral foundation of our society passes away its just something to be expected.

No, don't get me wrong. I'm not about to waste my time on silly stuff just because someone else gets easily offended. It's kind of like the definition of pornography: Hard to actually describe, but you tend to know it when you see it.

Heck, I had someone all incensed about seeing a gun being offered for sale in the classifieds here. I think he said something like "See where this can all lead?" I simply replied back with "Yep, I agree! Good thing it wasn't something I wanted or I would have spent money I need to spend on other things right now!" And that ended that.

So if someone gets easily offended and winds up running to me every half hour or so, THEY are rather likely to get their toes stepped on, and not the people having normal adult conversations in the chat room.

It's only the really out of hand stuff that I want brought to my attention. Anything less, I really don't care one way or the other.

Hope that clarifies it a bit.

Rich,
Yes it does clarify it rather well. Sounds like an even handed appraoch that seems sensible to me.

1. I think the leo forum/chat should have a moderator. I don't post that much but I read a ton, and there seems to be alot of bs in the leo forums... And a moderator would be nice to keep an eye on things. Everyone thinks it would be such a bad Idea, but I don't see how it could make things any worse. It would just be to make sure the threads don't get out of hand and stuff, not like "Do as I say or leave"...
2. Matt Graybael (justcage), Top Shelf Exotics, and Myself. I don't want to sound self centered by posting myself, but I read alot of posts and come on here a ton, and I've been mod of a few forums. But those would just name a few people that would be good, because I am sort of brain dead in the morning and can't remember the other usernames.
3. Those are my 3 picks that I can remember...so..

Well, gotta feed the dragons, ttyl,

Not only is that disrespectful, distasteful, and offensive, it is also far from funny and as old as dirt......

Some people get a kick out of the stupidest things......

Monte, I thought ellipsis means "to be short with"...... LOL Anyway I like putting my periods in a row.......................... LOL

Gregg,

el·lip·sis ** *P***Pronunciation Key**(-lpss)
n. pl. el·lip·ses (-sz)
The omission of a word or phrase necessary for a complete syntactical construction but not necessary for understanding.

An example of such omission.

A mark or series of marks (... or * * *, for example) used in writing or printing to indicate an omission, especially of letters or words.

Might I recommend "Strunk and White - The Elements of Style."

They have all them thar cool word-thingies in thar. LOL

Oh, sorry - I'm just having fun on a Friday morning.

I nominate Gregg for Mod . . .

I voted no to a moderator in the Leo forum area. If we all start trying to police ourselves and each other (to a point) we can keep things in check.

As far as the chats- If something offends you speak up! I think having a silent "moderator" there would help to keep things clean. Just someone we know is there but who isn't jumping on every little thing. Since it is a close community we may throw things(comments) at each other or say things that are crazy. We need someone who understands the community but will put a foot, or hand on the keyboard, down regarding the other more serious bad things.

But who could actually be this chat moderator? They'd have to be in the chat 24/7/365. Nobody has that kind of time.

1st off, you are acting like a liberal! A true conservative is one that protects rights set forth in the documents that were written by our founding fathers of this great nation. A liberal view is one that would want to silence someone elses ability to utilize their rights. Need a couple of examples? The PMRC aka Parents Music Resource Center, founded by 3 democratic senators wives(Al Gores wife being one of them)...fought for Parental Warning labels to be placed on music containing lyrics found be explicit or lewd; translation= censorship! Peta... hmm,I guess enough said there.
The joke was distasteful I agree, but it was nothing that you wouldn't hear in any Chris Rock bit or even on movies such as Friday.

I'm a liberal. LOL! Thats the funniest thing I think I have ever heard! Yep I'm a blue collared firefighter who's also a liberal! LOL! Man you are extremely off here! Oh and as regards to this.
but it was nothing that you wouldn't hear in any Chris Rock bit or even on movies such as Friday.
I don't listen to Chris Rock. I don't allow my children to watch him. He's vulgur, lewd and just plain distasteful! I would also be willing to bet the movie Friday was just more of the same. Gene you can take the stance of merely equating off color jokes to harmless fun and entertainment all you want, but there are still a few people around who disagree. So I guess its fair to say we just disagree on this.

Whats wrong with that Gene???? As a parent, I think it ia a good idea.... Where is the censorship in putting a warning lable on a CD cover???? As long as people have been parenting they have been censoring what their kids have been listening to..... It is a good idea to try and keep foul language out of a childs vocabulary for a while..... When they are adults they can choose what to listen to.......

I must say I love Chris Rock, Howard Stern rules, and the movie Friday was pretty damn funny, but I choose to watch and listen to those things...... You are not giving a person choice when you post a racial "joke" on a public forum......

Gene, that was just bad judgement on your part..... I think if you try to argue your point with this, you will end up looking worse than you already do.....

Does anyone notice how people like to quote the constitution ONLY when it might work in their favor???? LOL

This might just be my opinion but I doubt it.....

Also Gene, so what IF Chad was a liberal???? That does not change the fact that you knowingly typed a "joke" that was sure to offend more than one person..... Those types of "jokes" are things that even us republicans can find off color and "out of place" on a public, family forum or chat room.....

I am all for freedom of speach, but I am also for people being able to come to a chat room or anyplace for that matter, and not having to deal with this type of humor.....

Gene sorry if I made it sound as if YOU were the one to type the joke..... It was just the way I was phrasing it...... I did not realize it until I reread it..... Sorry about that....

Maybe part 1 of your plan is up for discussion, but you don't really think that someone who just started posting, recently made an account, doesn't have their age or name listed, and has 0 rep power is even going to be considered if a moderator is evenually deemed necessary? I honestly am against a moderator altogether, but if one is chosen, it needs to be a person who has been here for ages, has high rep power, proper ethical values, etc..., etc...

Just to clear any potential confusion, this is about the "and Myself" in the qoute above.
