    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

this egg has gotten huge, it is alot larger than any of my other eggs have gotten, and going by others that have hatched, this one should have hatched 4 days ago. It feel kinda squishy as well.
anyone got any thoughts?

looks like a balloon egg as i call them, they start out fertile and some where along the lines become infertile the baby dies inside but for some reason it doesnt hatch and eventually over swells and blows up (if you will) and then deflated... i would slit it chances are you find a extremely small dead leo or "snott with eyes"
 
i was figuring it died in the egg, but just wondering why it didnt show any signs of it. if it dont do somthing soon i will be cutting it.

I have a couple like that myself

I have seen those type of eggs before as well a few times. I have an idea that for some reason moisture exchange is increased and somehow the shell is more permeable than most others. This causes the immense swelling. Although some are laid rather large I think the majority of the egg growth occurs later. Now with those pics you showed I am not sure I would be slitting that egg. Bloodvessels is always a good sign. Even though something is going on with these type of eggs. Its probably well documented somewhere by somebody and we have just not heard or read about it yet. I wouldn't slit those eggs though. Specially if those are recent pics.
 
i have candled balloon eggs at 60 days before... see the veins but not embryo... i slit it and snothing but yellow/green goo with two black dots (the eyes) it seems these eggs for wtatever reason take on more than enough moisture and get really huge... they have a different look not like a normal eggs they are kindy shiny and sorta translucent without a light they honestly look like a water balloon. i have had a couple of these over the years and all of them were either snot with eyes or very small partially formed dead babies.
 
There are a couple of reasons that an egg will look like that:

1) Incubation medium is too moist. This will cause the egg to swell due to simple osmosis, water moves from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. We see this from time to time and almost always the babies hatch out just fine. Sometimes they seem a little small, as if they didn’t have enough room in the egg due to the water content, but are fully formed and healthy little guys.

2) The female did not have enough calcium causing the egg wall to be thin allowing more moisture to permeate the egg. This seems to happen in the latter part of the breeding season when the females are slowing down and have had a long season of laying eggs. These too will hatch normally but again may be smaller then average.


All in all, we never slit an egg unless it is sunken and stinky, why take the chance on runining the next big morph ;) just because an egg looks different.
