In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

First off I realize there is another thread that was just started for Allen but it's titled Good Guy and I'm not sure people always read the threads once they see that so I wanted to start another one.

I can't say he's good or bad, I can only relay my experience from this week.

I had an ad posted with animals I wanted in trade and what I had to offer. Allen (emails come from Matt Allen for what it's worth). We come to an agreement and I find no info on the BOI so when he asks me for references I do the same. He gives me a couple emails of people so I contact them. They reply saying good guy so I go ahead with the trade. Allen doesn't ship first so I agree to ship Wednesday for Thursday delivery and then he would then ship the following Monday for Tuesday delivery. I ship out 1.1 fires and 0.1 Spider 100% het albino (pictured below). I box them up approximately 4pm Wednesday and drop them off at FedEx priority overnight. They're going from St. Louis to Dayton Ohio and the weather was basically the same on both ends, high 70's for the high, upper 40's for the low so since they're traveling mostly overnight I did use a heat pack. FedEx doesn't deliver them till almost 1:45 but I'm not really worried as the temps are mild and that's still less than 21 hours in the box (packaged at 4pm Central, received at 1:45pm Eastern).

For what it's worth, he requested paperwork on the fires so using the wonderful Degei product I printed the paperwork with the below photos.

At about 2:30 I received an email saying that they had arrived and the box had a terrible stench. He said the heat pack (40 hour heat pack from superior enterprises with a supposed max surface temp of 110 degrees) had fallen off the top of the box onto the animals which were bagged and packaged with shredded newspaper. He said the the spider was so rank that he immediately had to throw it into the dumpster outside without pictures. He said one fire was DOA and the other died shortly after arrival and he provided me the pics below, and only these two pics, taken with his camera phone because he didn't have his camera with him.

334284252.jpg

334284254.jpg

I said I was sorry (I have every email sent before and after the DOA incident but it' too much to post here so I'll paraphrase), and I asked if I could get better pics and requested a pic of the spider as well. At one point he said no way on the spider then later said he'd try and look through the dumpster, but said he did have the fires in the freezer and would get better pics. My wife has family in the Dayton area so I even offered to drive to meet him with replacements and I'd take the dead snakes home with me so I could write them off as a loss. He said he was moving this weekend.

Anyway we continue to exchange emails and I continue to offer to drive out and ask for the pictures. This morning he tells me his wife had seen the snakes in the freezer, freaked out and I quote

"So my wife took them and threw them in the sewage drain in front of the house. I'm sorry for the inconvinience."

So now with only the two bad pictures above as proof of a shipment of three expensive animals dead in shipping and no chance of any other pictures because the spider is in a dumpster and the fires are in a sewer drain I'm suppose to accept the loss.

Sorry I know this post has been a lot of info. But I guess the point of the whole thing is this. I can't say that I've been ripped off. Deaths in shipping do occur. Since I was shipping first in this trade I had every incentive to make sure they arrived in good condition.

What I am upset about is the lack of assistance I have received on his end. Decent quality pictures of the animals received dead is a pretty standard practice. I want to make things right and I've offered but at the same time I want some reassurance that I'm making them right because there really was a problem. With the pictures provided I surely can't ID them as the snakes I shipped. To be honest they don't look like a fire to me as fires have a distinct belly pattern.

Belly pictures of a couple fires I do still have.

So I'll stop rambling now. I just want to reiterate that I'm not saying Allen is a ripoff artist because I don't have proof of that. What I am saying is that before making a deal with him you should consider the above and consider if somebody who takes little to no initiative to ease your mind when something like this does happen is somebody that you feel safe doing business with. I've smelled some pretty awful things in my time in this hobby but I would be able to stomach it long enough to get a couple pictures as proof.

Thanks.

Chris

I would tell him you need pics that show the snake's you shipped, clearly, as the dead snakes. If he cannot provide them, you will assume the snake's you shed are still alive, and still expect him to live up to his end of the trade.

Dave

I repeatedly asked for pics but now that seems to be out of the question. I have all the emails I sent and I believe I kept a very level head, I never resorted to profanity or anything like that. This is the text of the email I was least nice in

Wow, I'm speechless here. I'm suppose to accept that $XXXX worth of snakes arrived dead based on terrible camera phone pics (when you said you didn't have a phone currently because it had been dropped in a sink) of an upside down snake that I can in no way identify as actually being the animal I shipped? Why do I get the feeling that I am the one that has been ripped off? Thanks.

He responded with this email

I understand where you're coming from, but I am offended you would say I'm trying to rip you off. I said the snakes we're DOA. Do NOT call me a liar.

And I replied once again saying I wasn't calling him a liar that I just wanted some proof and that I was willing to drive there this weekend with replacement animals. But I believe he has stopped responding as I haven't received anything since the "Do NOT call me a liar." email around 10:30 this morning.

So I hold out little hope of receiving what I expected in trade, and figured the best thing I could do was present the information here so that others could judge for themselves.

I don't think asking for at the least fair quality pictures was an unreasonable request in any situation like this.

Chris,

I have Fires as well..and like you stated they definitely
have distinct bellies. The animal in the photos does not
appear to have that belly. It looks (in my opinion) to be
the belly of a normal ball python. Something I noticed
about the pics ..there is a glare coming off of streaks
on the surface area. Like something is wet..?

The first thing that should have happened:
PROPER PHOTOS TAKEN

Totally unacceptable to not document everything.
I hope this gets worked out.

Agreed.

Its in our TOS that in the event of a DOA , I must get a pic of the top and sides to verify its the animal I sent. If I can't get decent pics of the DOA to verify then the customer will find me not willing to refund or replace the animal.

If I were sent the pics the OP received I'd assume that my animal / animals were still alive. The excuses of why he can't get pics are lame ( red flag ). The 2nd pic , while a full belly shot , is so poor quality , mixed with the shadows , it would be difficult if not impossible to identify. And that would be if you happen to have fully belly shots to compare to. If he could get belly shots he could've gotten full body shots ( red flag ).

Judging by the pics and excuses , I'm smelling a scam.

The timestamp on the camera must not be set correctly then because I received the pictures from him in an email on 9/11 at 1:30pm central 2:30pm his time.

Chris

Just adding the email header info from the email where he provided pics.

Chris,

This is very interesting to hear. I am also in the middle of a trade with Allen. I shipped out a ghost male and a mojave male to him on Wednesday. Fedex was suppose to deliver the package by 10:30 AM but didn't get there till closer to two.

I called FedEx and ask them to page the driver to see what the hold up was and asked Allen to let me know how they are once they arrive. Allen then tells me the mojave male had died and probably died right after I shipped it as it was really stinky by the time he got it. Allen also said he had tossed the body into the field. So no pics either. Here is the PM I got from Allen.

" Re: offer..
They just got in at about 2pm... Couple problems.. The Mojave didnt make the trip.. Looks like he died like right after u shipped him because he smelled AWFULE i had to throw him in the field behind my brothers house. The ghost is alive.. But you sent me the wrong ghost.. The one you said you were going to ship me was a 2007, 250gram male with a scar on his back.. I got a 08.. Like 80gram male with no scar...

I gave you my word though.. So I still intend on shipping out my end of the deal. But, I hope you can make this right.. I mean the mojave was DOA and the ghost isnt the one we decided on... But still intend on shipping out monday."

I did ship out the wrong ghost male to him by accident which I did tell him I will correct on Monday. Now I asked Allen to ship the 1.1 fires to me first before I will send him the replacement mojave and ghost. I hope he comes through on his end of the deal.

Here are the pics of the 1.1 fires he sent me.

I sent Allen an email about this post and asked him to come through on his end. I guess we'll just have to wait and see on Tuesday if I get them or not. Keep up posted on what happens and I will do that same.

I also wanted to ad that the mojave I sent him just had its first shed about 7 days prior and was just about ready to have his first meal and was in no way unhealthy or thin. Whether is died due to being shipped to early I don't know. I used all the precautions I always do and had a 48 hour heat pack in there taped to the top of the Styrofoam lid with 6 layers of folded newspaper between the heat back and the snake bags.

They both were also well hydrated with a soak the night prior to being shipped. I've never lost an animal before due to shipping and it was killing me trying to figure out what happened. I hope this was just coincidence and that Allen is not a scammer. I guess we will know based on how he handles these two incidents.

Very interesting. Was the address you shipped to 913 Leatherwood DR? Because he told me that was his grandmother's house and that he stayed there during the week to take care of her because she had alzhymers.

Also odd that he would through my spider in the dumpster because of the smell and your mojave in a field.

He did claim at one point he was going to ship out to me on Monday as agreed as well so I will definitely update this post if I receive the clown female I was to receive. He only really mentioned it in passing though and after he stopped responding to my emails and couldn't provide pictures I had come to a point where I didn't believe I would actually receive her which is why I decided to post. I hope he does come through for both of us.

Best of luck in your situation as well.

Chris

That's what I thought. Since I've never owned a fire and I know their looks can vary, not to mention the crappy pics, I thought I would take a chance. Allen has down business with a vendor I trust every month and based on the feed back here I thought it would be fine.

Allen did say he has all the paperwork and guarantees they are fires. I told him I would show them to some local breeders here that has fires to see if they are the real thing. If they were not, Allen said he would take them back.

I was actually expecting Sam to have linked photos that Chris had sent to Allen. With temps being in the 70s , what are the odds that 90% of the snakes Allen has been getting is coming in dead? He's real quick to toss away the bodies in case anyone wants some firm evidence.

Sorry Chris & SAm that ya'll are stuck wondering WTF is going on.

Does this help any in identification?

David Fernandez

To be honest not really. The belly doesn't look like a fire to me and where the dark pigment hits the belly on this picture it seems very dark, although I don't know if it's the poor picture quality. But if you look at the fires I shipped where the dark pigment reaches the belly it's very faded, not dark. I just wanted some overhead shots because I had just taken the pictures the day before shipping them to create the paperwork which is why I requested a normal view of them hoping to be able to verify.

Chris

I'm not sure if this will help at all, but I tweaked the lighting and contrast on those pics. I hope you are able to get some resolution somehow.
