In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

There are currently two well-known databases that are dispersed among herpers and breeders:

www.metzcal.com:

www.degei.com

Paper and pencil/pen

Which from your experience is the more reliable software and which is the most extensive?

Of the two which do you prefer? Why?

Do you know of any other software?

Thanks!! The more software we have organized in one place, the greater selection the members will have and ultimately we may all find something that is perfect for us. :)

Record Keeping Software

Here is another one at http://www.justreptiles.com

The genetic calculator on metzcal looks very interesting. Do any of the other progreams mentioned have any thing like that? And is the one on Metzcal worth its salt? I have been using paper and pencil/pen but would like something else if it is any good.

I use Iherp personally..... Aaron is adding several features in his next update incorporating classified adds etc...

I've been testing it out with my Ball Pythons because none of these dang programs are compatible with my OS. While I don't like relying on someone else's host to store my data or having to log on to a website to enter data, it's pretty good for a starting program.

Aaron needs to fix some issues with the existing program. I noticed the breeding section isn't working quite right (contacted him twice about it). When you add a breeding it should show up in the males section too, but it's not. Their also needs to be some sort of way to download the data...Monthly data sheets would be great...That way I have copies to file away if something happens to the website.

Is Metzcal free???? I use Iherp personally..... Aaron is adding several features in his next update incorporating classified adds etc...plus it comes with a great forum style community

I am checking out both tracking software today. METZCAL is free, as is a version of the DEGEI.
I also use iherp for my tracking, simply because I stumbled upon the site & thought it was neat. Until then, I had made my own spreadsheets strictly for tracking. I am interested in the features these 2 downloads have; sounds like both are decent.

Metzcal has been updated, and the bug removed. What I like about it ove other freewares, is that it is full featured. Not your basic stuff. I use it and have for a long time. Since back when it was HerpMaster. Great stuff, although it does require some user input. Once a data base has been created though, it can be shared.

I too use Iherp. I find it very easy to use. Aaron is always ready and willing to answer any questions. The site just works well for me. I lookeed into the others posted here, but I'll stick with Iherp.

I'm way too picky about data entry, so I have my own army of spreadsheets to keep track of everything. Most programs don't have everything I want, and so I have to keep track of something myself anyway, and the nice thing about spreadsheets is that they work on all OS (which is great since I use Windows, Mac, and Linux).

Yeah, but you gotta be smart to build those up.

That's why I use Metzcal. :D Keeps track of EVERYTHING. Cages, which animals are where, vet visits and treatments, breedings, feedings, water changes, defecation's, nutritional value of what you're feeding them, lineages, genetics (although I admit, you have to be a bit creative with the genetics part to make it work how you like it), equipment being used, sales.

Only thing I wish it would do is have an inventory that reduced it'self as you feed the animals. Other then that, I dig it.

Degei has the inventory that automatically reduces when you feed. ;)

I've stuck with Degei, and I love it. The creator is always quick to help if any bugs come up, and send patches and corrections. I understand he's working on a brand new version now, since the old one has issues with that evil version of Windows that no one likes. Since I use XP Pro, that's fine with me--Degei's working great. I can't wait to see what new toys we will get with the next version!

I use iHerp, which I'm completely addicted to I'll admit :D I plan to have a program on my computer for backup, but iHerp does a lot on it's own for me.

I used it at one time then I got lazy.

the new computer I have has windows 7 on it... Im hoping it will work with that version of windows because Id like to start using it again.
