In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Another look at the Bodkins kids

Some of you may remember one of my clutch announcements that included the exclamation Odds Bodkins in the title. It was an 7 egg clutch from a yellowbelly fire x blonde pastel pairing.
What about the odds?
7 eggs yielding 8 babies.
5 of 7 eggs were pastel
0 normals
I'm currently thinking 6 of 8 babies are yellowbellies (if I'm wrong, it's 5; which is still pretty good from 7 eggs.

Anyway - here's a look at the yellowbellies. The twins are obviously much smaller, weighing in at 40-60g less than their siblings. The belly shot shows there's no doubt about these.

The fireflies

Edited to add - in this picture, the one on the right looks more like a regular pastel...well, a darn nice pastel, actually. Gotta love the things you can see first in the camera. Guess that one goes back to the undecided label.

And the other two. The one on the bottom was obvious from the start; the top one, though, was the one I puzzled over from day 1. Is it a firefly, or a second pastel yellowbelly fire? It looks better (to me) than the two fireflies; but not as good as the one with which he's posing. As it's come into its color, I've become more confident in calling it a pastel yellowbelly fire. I hate calling it "it"; but I don't remember if it's a male or female...

(now that I think back, I want to say female; but obviously I'll have to check)
Regardless, though, that one was big at hatching and is already over 100g empty after 2 meals

Its hard to tell but the one on the right could be a lower expressed firefly or a really damn nice pastel!

The top could be carrying YB also but again its hard to tell. I have no foubt the bottom one is the 3 banger. Nice babies Harlad! And the odds were in your favor to hatch no norms!

Killed it on visual looks for the whole group. Definitely some easy to see YellowBelly in group. Post 2 snake on the right is my favorite right now. congrats!

Harald - I think you are playing a joke on us with the genetics...
Do you have pictures of mom & dad, perhaps on another thread??

Looking at the varying degrees of siblings, I say there is perhaps an unknown fourth gene in the mix.

I'm sure I do - if not, I'll go upstairs and take new ones, lol. Give me a minute to track them down.

Here is the mother - purchased as a blonde pastel in....I think it was 2006
(the pic is from 2010 - I don't think I've taken any since)
BPgroup006.jpg

And the sire - purchased as a yellowbelly fire. I believe this pic is from late 2012

If fresh pics are needed, let me know. (and YES, he was the only male with her - her previous pairing was with a black pastel a couple of years ago, and he clearly had nothing to do with these babies)

Well darn, those pictures look just like you described, Pastel mother and FireYB father.

Here are my guesses as to what you have, WITHOUT:thumbsup: have seen the bellies of any of them.

I was going to do belly shots with all of them; but decided it would have gotten too complicated. New pictures in about a half hour.

Here we go - starting with the two in post 2
attachment.php

Left snake first, then belly; right snake, belly

The bellies on those two have added to the confusion for me; because, on any given day, depending on how they flex/twist, I see varying amounts of marking on them. I can definitely see why you call the one pastel fire yellowbelly, though...in fact, now that it's been said, it's almost obvious.

In looking at the new pics, I don't disagree with the ones you called firefly; and I think the new picture supports your call on the firefly yellowbelly even more strongly than the previous one.
I'm not sure how I feel about the "UNKNOWN" concept on that last girl, though. I guess it doesn't matter all that much, as she's a keeper - I just like looking at her. It really doesn't matter whether she's a super nice firefly vs pastel yellowbelly fire...though it would be nice to KNOW. If there's something UNKNOWN in there; that means there will likely be more confusion in the future (assuming that I stay in the game)

Okay, I think I have burned my eyes from looking so long now.

In descending order top to bottom equaling 1 to 4.

1. 90% sure FireFly
2. 100% sure FireFly YellowBelly
3. 90% sure FireFly
4. 90% sure FireFly (the new pictures help reduce the white fading some)

I went back and looked at a bunch of my old firefly pictures from right out of egg to about 4 months old. Some are super clean and crisp with no fading. Some are super faded on their sides.

In my eyes you have super A++++ faded FireFlies, I mean prime faded examples, so good, that is where the confusion is coming from.

Thank you, sir - your assistance has been greatly appreciated.
(As somebody mentioned in the first thread - this is exactly why I avoided fires and yellowbellies for so long, lol)
