    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

So, I'm going to a reptile show in about 2 weeks and I have a hard time going without coming home with a new member to add to the family! I really want another hoggie..but my apt can hardly fit a 10 gallon tank that I already have. So I was just wondering...what about getting another female and keeping them both in a 20 gallon? Prob. not a good idea, but i'm out of ideas to make them fit! :)
 
What about building a rack system that would allow you to add more cages vertically?

I have been contemplating building a system similar to a dresser that would allow me to put the cages on pull-out platforms. They would be stored and displayed flush with the front, but when it's time for feeding, handling, cleaning, etc. the 'drawers' would slide out and allow access to the tops of the cages.

Not sure how large your hoggie is right now, but for the first year, I had housed two in a 20 gallon long cage. I just put a divider down the middle to keep them physically separated.

This may not be much help, but hopefully it will get the gears turning to generate some other ideas.
 
ive seen hogs get along fine together, when i first bought my hoggie, she was with another hog in the store for a while..and no harm done there...but you know your hog better than i do. and size also matters :)
 
hmm...i would be afraid to put her in with another hoggie. She's so picky and bitchy sometimes that I have a feeling she would have cannibalistic tendencies! :)

The "drawer" type situation sounds like a good idea, but i can't even think of where i would stack them since shes right under a window..and thats the only free corner in my apartment.
Maybe someday when my snake collection gets out of hand...if you set one up, i'd love to see pictures!!

Hmm, shes about the length of her 10 gallon, here's a picture :)
she was a problem eater for about a year...now she eats at least twice a week...shes finally growing the way a little hoggie should! (Got her about a year and a half ago)

how big/old is yours? I have yet to see a full grown hoggie.

I have a pair of western hoggies that were CBB in june of 2006. The male is about 12 inches long, but my female is around 22 inches or so. She is a monster when it comes to feeding. She ate two rat pinks in a matter of a minute or two, then a day later ate two mouse pinks refused by my male!! My male is a picky eater, but she has no problem finishing off what he leaves behind. I have never seen a full grown adult in anything other than pictures, but pics often distort sizes or misrepresent them. It would be nice to see one in person.

BTW -- Katie, I think she is beautiful! I will try to get pics up later tonight of mine.
 
mine is not a full grown adult yet...this september will be our three year anniversary, and i think she was maybe a year old when i got her...but shes still growing...i have seen full grown adult western hoggies..theyre soo pretty..and theyre thick all around, but theyre very rare..and from my experience, it takes a while for them to grow to that size..but when they doo..

i like that five dollar bill in there...it shows the real size..when i show pics of giselle to people they think shes huge (especially if they dont know snakes) but when they see her shes this petite lil thing. :)
 
Aww!! They are so cute!! Great close ups....it's tricky to get them to pose for the camera most of the time!! Do you plan on breeding them? Any idea what age is ideal for breeding? I would love to breed mine, but I can't seem to find the time. Plus i've had bad luck with snakes...my hoggie was sick for a long time and my king has been sick too :( I seem to know how to pick em!
Maybe next time you should throw in a $100 bill...i'm sure they will pose for ya then ;)
 
Thanks, I think these guys are just adorable!

I do plan on breeding them. They are het albino, so I am keeping my fingers crossed for when the time comes. Many people will tell you age really isn't the biggest factor for breeding hognose. It's more dependent on their weight. Females should be around 250-300 grams or more and males should be around 65 grams or more. My problem is I'm a noob to breeding snakes, so it will be my first attempt. I'm not sure if they will be ready this next season, but it would be nice if they are.

What is causing your snakes to be ill? Is it just a one-time deal, or does it have to do with other factors?

The $5 bill was all I had at the time....I guess I could have put in my bank debit card. :shrug01: lol

has anyone's hog gone off feeding lately? Could it be the time of year? Mine hasn't eaten in a month and shed in that period of time once. Should I be worried since she was a problem eater when she was a baby?
 
Both my hogs took a meal last week.

What have the temps been like in NY? It may just be getting close enough to winter for her to fast. I could be wrong though.
 
it's been 70's 80's...sometimes colder at night. I keep it warm in her cage though, around 86-88 on the warm side. She looks interested and plays with the mice for a bit, then slithers away. Could she be constipated? I don't see much of a bulge in her though.
 
You said it has been a month since she last ate. When was her last defecation? If she has gone in the last month, constipation many not be the problem.
 
about a month ago she defecated, i'm not sure if it was before or after her last meal. However, a few days ago, she went to the bathroom a little. I tried soaking her once, but didn't seem to do anything. The vet put her on calcium for the past few months..not too sure if that can cause constipation. kinda complicated eh? :)
