While making rounds tonight I picked up this Blizzard het. LV male to pull a piece of coco fiber out of his mouth. I thought his eye looked funny and held him under one of the lights to check it out. I'm not real familiar with the snake-eyed trait, but from what I can tell, that's what he's got. Garrick had told me that he thought he'd seen it pop up in his LVBB line, and I suspect that my male LVBB is developing a snake eye as well.

Anyway, here's a few pictures I took. Sorry they're not that great, but it's late, I'm tired, and my arm was kinda shaky.

Any thoughts? :shrug01:

Not that I could see, but he was pretty wiggly. I'll check tomorrow when the lights are back on.

I don't know much about snake eyed leos, as i don't own any, but I can't help but wonder if the snake eye mutation somehow stretches the pupil forward and causes the solid color seen in the front of snake eyes. If so, they might have some sight problems and bad sensitivity to light. Sorry if this has already been said, I don't read much about snake eye.

thats an interesting theory. i never thought about that. so perhaps the sanke eye isnt so much a random genetic mutation as it is a genetic defect then?

it's pretty much impossible to see a pupil in the "normal" snake-eyes, due to how dark they are. However, I have see albino snake eyes where you can see a pupil (barely).

If it were me, I would run as many sight tests as I could to see if it effects their vision. If they have the same responces as a normal eyed gecko, I wouldn't worry.

On my snake eyed geckos (a blizz and blazzing blizz) They do seem a bit more touchy to light. More so than a normal gecko with black eyes, but not as much as an albino would. Nothing really bad.

But to be a nice person I always check my snake eyes over in a dark room, just to be sure. :)

If their sensitivity to light isn't strong, the I doubt the pupil is stretched. Perhaps the snake eye mutation really is just about color and nothing more. Couldn't help but wonder ;)

You get that from garrick?

Yes, he's from Garrick. I picked him up at the Monona Show last fall.

I looked for a discernable pupil this afternoon and if I held him in the light at just the right angle, I could see a faint line that looked to be the outline of the pupil. He doesn't seem to be overly sensitive to light, and he tracks/catches crickets and mealworms just like any other of my geckos, so I don't think he's having sight problems.

I saw your blazing and it looked like it was developing snake eye, the pupil looked like it was turning black
You mean the iris? Both this one and the blazing have one eye that appears to be darkening from the center outwards. I'm wondering if they'll continue to darken and turn into a "snake eye" or if they'll just look ... um... weird. lol

LOL i meant just outside the pupil, so i guess the iris. Ir looks just like pigmentation ,not like the pupiol or anything is stretched.

Yes, Ide call it a Snake Eye. We just do not know if it is the same as the RAPTOR/ECLIPSE. But Blizzards w/ eyes like this really isnt anything new.

Noone seemed to notice until Rons came out.

Having raised a few Snake Eyed RAPTORs from hatchlings, and watching my Tremper BB eat, there vision is no different than any other Albino or Blizzard. Both morphs have poor eyesight when compared to Normals. Think this is why Bells, and Blizzards seem to be more skittish.

This does sound very familiar Paul, since mine were born with SOLID red eyes, BUT the 'normal' part of the eye (not the solid half) slowly grew in over the first two months.
It is very odd, it almost looks like 'fuzz' growing in throughout part of the eye, until it fills out, then it looks like a regular Albino eye(just the one half).

Hi Paul,
I also have a blizzard that has a similar eyes as yours...
How old is your male now? I think mine is a female & still not full grown.

Here're some recent pics I took:

Alfeus, aren't those eyes cool!? I think my blizzard male is about 9-10 months, and I'm guessing the LVBB male is close to a year. I don't have their birthdates, so I can't be completely sure though. I think I like the snake-eyes more than the eclipse eyes. They're more unique. That, and all of my fat tail geckos have solid color eyes, so the eclipse isn't as "odd" as the snake-eyes. But they're both cool. :hehe:

Man that's cool!! I love blizzards. I'll bet you anything snake eyes is nothing more than the color of the iris being different. If the pupil was being stretched they would have to be incredibly sensitive to light, and the pupil would have to be able to constrict if they were! It would be nothing more than a big pupil and the iris would show on the other side when it constricted.

Emily, I think you're right. I have another blizzard with an eye that seems to be starting to develop the snake-eye appearance. It does not look like the pupil is stretching, it looks like the iris is darkening from the inside out. I tried to get a picture of her, but none of them turned out and showed what I'm talking about. But yeah, I think you're right.
