In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

anything to help the gopher tortoises!

where i live it is not very common to see the little gopher tortoises trekking across the road or munching out beside of it! it is an amazing site even though to some it is an average animal, all is fair in opinion but to me when you take advantage of them physically such as running them over or just molesting them something has to be done!!people need to be aware that they are not just killing or hurting a tortoise, they are shortening any possibility of them getting themselves off the endangered species list!! although it is illegal to move them from the road,it is even more illegal to just run them over!
i have become tired of this long before i decided to let you guys know i need your help, here is what i have said to the Florida wildlife commission

Is there anyway i can get the county i live in and possibly the surrounding areas to have signs up warning drivers how endangered the gopher tortoises are and that is against the law to molest and/or run them over?

their response...

We do not have any signs. You would need to contact your County Commissioner's and see if they would have some signs made.
Thank you.

so i did! here it is!

Hello, I am Concerned about the Gopher Tortoise Population, with seeing more and more dead on the road, and i would like to know how i could get some signs put up in areas that are heavily inhabited by Tortoises. I ask about this, Because there are areas for Deer and Bear, which i am not sure if Deer are Protected by wildlife laws But I am pretty Sure that the Gopher Tortoises are. I have already spoke with the Florida wildlife commission, and they told me to contact you, If you could get back to me as soon as possible, i would love to be able to do my part to help these Magnificent animals. Thank you for your Time.

Sincerely,
Charlotte Saunders.

Ms. Saunders,

We have forwarded your concerns to our Road Department to address. If you have any further questions, you can contact them by telephone at 352-486-5124.

Thank you,
Heather Lombardo
Administrative Support Supervisor

so i did contact them they told me that they were yet to hear of that!!
they said that they would try and find a person to get back to me that could answer my questions!!

although i do believe" let the world change you and you can change the world"-Ernesto Guevara
i doubt i will make the difference but that does not mean that i will not keep trying!! all i am asking is that if it comes time to get a petition ready will anyone back me up?

Good luck Charlotte...although not living in FL would probably invalidate any petition I would sign, you've got moral support!!

thanx mang!!!yep i said mang!
it really kills us to see them on the road all mashed and what not!
there is really nothing you can do except donate land to the tortoises! if only there were a perserve!that is not fair to the animal at all but at least they would have a chance to repopulate!
thank you for understanding and supporting our cause, well not ours per say it belongs to the animals but i guess some one has to be the lorax!

You... sure about that?

Admittedly I have never had a Florida drivers license but in the three states I have held them in, the driver of a vehicle was looking at a moving violation if they were caught breaking the traffic laws to dodge animals in the road.

yep!because they are an endangered species!! just like hitting a sandhill crane!
besides that isn't the matter at hand...you are required to stop and let the animal pass and then proceed. just like an alligator in the everglades! or even a bicycler on the side of the road you only pass them if there are no cars coming, other than that you are to still keep distance until its okay to go around.its a little off subject but then again you asked!!

another step closer to helping the gopher tortoises!

An update!!!

Today i spoke with the road department for my area, they told me that in order to have the signs put up again we would have to speak with the county commissioners.they also informed me that they would need a template to have signs put up, i told them we would do what we could to make an efficient enough sign that would with stand rain.we will probably have to do a well documented census to show signs of heavy tortoise traffic.i asked them why they could not do this like they do to see where deer signs need to be and they said it was mostly based on road kill count.i told them i have seen many of dead tortoises, and thats where the census idea came in.

I think that they should be doing something about this way before i said anything!
well i guess now starts the struggle! but i have people who will definetly help out!
