    In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

    Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

    Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

    Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Are surinam's that hard?

Hello all,

I am new to this site but have kept reptiles for almost 15 years. I haven't kept anything other than turtles(for the wife) for the past couple of years. When I started reading up on surinames, I started getting scared off due to their husbandry requirements. Are they really that much more difficult to maintain than say a Columbian BCI? Are the captive born suriname's any hardier? Thanks for your help.

Jason

Surinames are not much more difficult at all, but I would recommend starting with a captive bred specimen. Imported animals are always more difficult. The temp an humidity requirements are similar, I always kept mine at the same temps as my other boas. 88-90 warm and 80-82 cool. The big difference is feeding, Surinames do not grow as fast as BCI and their feeding schedule must be adjusted to match. I feed my BCI every 7-10 days for the first 18 months, but a young Suri should only be fed every 14 days. Feeding them more often stresses them out and causes them to regurge. Hope this was helpful.

JCCS,

Thanks for the reply. I am definitely buying a captive bred, regardless of what I end up with. That does reassure me that they aren't impossible to maintain.

i agree with JCCS surinames boas are no harder to keep then say a BCI just MAKE SURE IT IS CAPTIVE PRODUCED that is the most important thing about true red tails "also temp and humidity can be different but keep it exactly like JCCS said

wild collected animals usually die of stress and or dehyadration and most wont eat sometimes u might get lucky and get a wild collected boa that is in good health but i always go with captive produced reptiles of any kind hope this helps thanks
