In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Info Arizona Exotics --- Payson, Az.

My name is greg and have dealt with a&e for years. Never gotten a bad animal. The conditions in their shop have always been excellent. This person is obviously very ignorent to exotics, reptiles in particular. Stick to cats. Probably have better luck.

When you're going to insult someone, make sure you spell "ignorant" right, bud.

I just laff... Let's all just mispel like dumm Nurds! Why not! I wanna be dumm and knew again two!

With all the funny stuff though... Wait till I get up there. THIS WEEKEND! Maybe tomorrow, I'm off and bored!

AND GUESS WHAT! I'm feeling awwwwwwwwfully froggy this time! I'm not flu ridden today! Whoopsie daisy!

I just jumped the gun... I just tried a civil convo with Shannon Long. He is NO GOOD for animals! He couldn't answer a few questions and not act like a hotshot on the phone. I can't wait to finish this bad deal up! As always I am going to set him straight, I wish that I didn't even wait, I apologize, I am also glad I just talk to this clown, he is no good!

The conditions in their shop have always been excellent.
So I take it you admire and approve of the conditions the pictured lizard was in, the reported empty water dishes, etc.?

This person is obviously very ignorent to exotics, reptiles in particular.
Are you speaking to his expectations that critters have food and water, and that care to the petshop critters should come prior to employees allegedly lounging around the cash register?

Wait till I get up there.
I wish I could be there to see justice served, but I know that it's going to get done right.
Do it for the Collared. Do it for all the critters.

I promise I just tried a civil approach and got my life threatened... Fwiw; I laughed at it, and Shannon the owner is no good! I have zeroed in on his antics! His shop is closing asap....

This is ridiculous, LOL. Tom, I would press charges on him just for the fact that he needs to be taught a lesson. People think because they are almighty and are up on their own personal pedestal, that they can talk to people any way they want. Well, I hope this guys' shop closes down and he gets fined, then we'll see who the "ignorent" person is.

Actions like these can't be allowed to happen. There is ZERO excuses for an animal not being provided a basic need. This makes me wonder, since water is absent from enclosures, how are the animals that may be more fragile to temperature/humidity kept? Then this person has the nerve to threaten a member for outing them? I just WISH I live closer to AZ...

Okay Tom,

First off, you never had your "life threatened". I didn't threaten you at all. In fact, you were the one throwing around threats. I simply laughed at you raging like a tough guy on the phone. Funny how big you are talking tough on the internet and the phone. To bad you didn't have the guts to say anything to anyone in person that day.

So to you and those on your bandwagon. Here are the Facts;

The collard lizard in question was brought to us in the condition you saw it in. It was obvious to us that it was too far gone to save. We took it in anyway. The fact that there was no water, is not so devastating as you try to make it. This desert collard lizard rarely sees water in the wild. So, one day without is not a huge deal. You must have been in on a Saturday. I pay a full time employee to care for the animals Monday - Friday. So again, one day without water is not a big deal for these desert lizards.

Now we could've hid the poor guy in the back to avoid idiots like Tom. Hiding things is just not what we are about.

Dirty cages? Not a chance. Our displays are well maintained. Can you find sheds from time to time? Of course you can, but this is not a health concern by any means. We actually let people have the nice sheds when want. Will you finds fecal matter from time to time? Of course you will, they do poop... We clean, mist, and feed in the mornings and again at close. So, in the middle of the day there is a good chance to see a poop.

In closing; Get a life Tom.

I'm disgusted. You took this poor critter in and it lay in filth with no food or water. It would have take a few minutes to clean the cage and put food and water in.
If you are going to take in an animal, do right by it. The way you treat it reflects on you.
Just because a critter is going to die is not a reason to let it spend its last days dried out, filthy, hungry.

I am not getting heavily involved in here, but to the people saying small water bowls will evaporate in a single day, please find a way to rid yourself of your ignorance.

I live in Arizona, as does Tom. I have over 70 animals in a room maintained between 82-85 degrees and enclosures that reach 92-93 degrees, some of which use these tiny little cat dishes for water. NONE of them have their water evaporate in a single day. None.

This is an excuse for laziness and chosen blissful ignorance and it is abhorrent behavior for adults charged with caring for animals to partake in.

Just because desert animals infrequently drink does not make it okay for them to not have water. That option should be available to them 24/7 for the simple fact they DO drink so infrequently. In the wild that animal has the luxury to wander out in the early morning to seek out water as it wishes. If you rob it of water in captivity, what choice does that animal now have.

Get a handle on your people and on your husbandry for that basic need alone. You are in Arizona. NO ANIMAL SHOULD BE WITHOUT WATER EVER FOR ANY REASON, IT SHOULD ALWAYS BE AN AVAILABLE OPTION FOR THEM. If they are really evaporating that fast? Get bigger bowls or fill them up better than you have been.

I tried to be nice to you on the phone... It's out of my hands now. Have a good day liar!

but to the people saying small water bowls will evaporate in a single day, please find a way to rid yourself of your ignorance.

Here, here! Or at least, refrain from the outright lying. I lived in Tucson. That's just a crock.

I fill the small water dish for the greek tortoises every morning, it still has water in the mornings. This IS outdoor in Mesa,az.

My wife and I walked in there about 3 years ago and cages were multiple poops worth of dirty. watering had not happened for most. all of the water bowls had "refill" rings and no one was working on anything. I DID mention the dehydrated conditions of the water bowls.. the woman told my wife and I the owner was on vacation and they were "just baby sitting" the store. At that time they had some "rescued" water dragons that were emaciated and dehydrated.

I passed the poor conditions off as a friend or relative not doing what they were suppose to be doing.

My final post... (Hopefully)

We are on the right track finally! Lots of hoops and bounds...

I should not have procrastinated and talked bologna on here, I should have just made the proper phone call on day one.

I DO apologize for that!

I've done most of what I could for these creatures under their care/neglect.

I think you were fair and gave them the time to come in and explain to the community what was going on. Even though there is NO excuse, at least you gave them ample time to come in and admit they were wrong, and tell us how they were going to fix it. Neither of those happened, but hey, you gave them the OPTION to do it.

Arizona Exotics/ Shannon Long, you should be ashamed. Do the world a favor and LEAVE THE REPTILE HOBBY FOR GOOD!!!! You should not even be allowed to LOOK at a reptile let alone keep one.

rather than type the whole thing up over and over again:

planning on having water in the dish is not equal to actually providing water.
Neglect is why some stores should be cited and/or closed.
more often than not, a store that had some neglect issues at one time has neglect issues on a regular basis.
I have seen this time and time again; those stores have since been shut down by the authorities; unfortunately animals were dying in between the citations that ultimately shut them down.

case in point:
My wife and I walked in there about 3 years ago and cages were multiple poops worth of dirty. watering had not happened for most. all of the water bowls had "refill" rings and no one was working on anything. idiots like Tom.

Tom is a hero for looking out for the Collared even though it died, and for the other critters, as well as alerting prospective purchasers to what they might find in this pet shop and exactly what kind of behavior they are supporting if they spend dollars at Arizona Exotics.

I was thinking about this thread yesterday, along with the oft-repeated phrase that what truly shows what a person or company is about is not how they handle the good times, but how they handle mistakes and negative issues.

In some alternate universe Tom goes in, finds the poor critter, the lack of water, the other deficits and posts about it exactly as he did here.
But in this alternate universe, Shannon sees the post, and thanks Tom. Shannon fires everyone who was lounging around the cash register that day, and sends Tom a $1,000 gift certificate and asks him to make three or four surprise visits over the course of this year and post what he finds, to make sure the changes Shannon implements to make sure the critters are safe and well taken care of are being carried out.

Sadly, we are in our own universe, and Shannon has merely stooped to name calling and defended the indefensible conditions at this pet shop.
