In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Info Arizona Exotics --- Payson, Az.

So, one day without is not a huge deal. You must have been in on a Saturday. I pay a full time employee to care for the animals Monday - Friday. So again, one day without water is not a big deal for these desert lizards.

As a pet store owner myself, I know that this is ILLEGAL. Yes, in the wild, they won't see water for days. In captivity, it is legally considered animal abuse to fail to provide sufficient food, fresh clean water, and shelter to any animal in your possession at any time.

I know stores that have had gorgeous, perfect uro set-ups, healthy, thriving animals that were clearly getting all their moisture from their greens and hay -- and got cited or warned for not having a water dish in the enclosure. This was legally correctable by supplying fresh drinking water at all times, even though of course the uros never touched it and kept getting the water from their diet. This is federal law at play here.

It is, also, by the way, entirely illegal to display visibly sick, injured, ill, or dying animals. A rescue in a fragile medical condition should NEVER be visible to the public. How much extra stress is that poor critter going to have out on the sales floor, with kids banging on it, people walking by, extra light, noise, and chaos? It should have been somewhere quiet and away from traffic.

It is also required by law to maintain a distinct QT room singly devoted to that purpose, by the way -- a multi-use room like a bathroom doesn't cut it. And if your sickroom is already that full, why? What are you doing wrong that you have so many ailing animals? And if the argument is 'they're fresh stock that came in, not sick stuff", why are you buying MORE animals when you don't have enough space to properly display and care for what you've got? What if you had a URI on your sales floor and needed to move other animals out to treat, but you've got no available room? That's certainly not Ok, legally or morally.

And on that note, *federally* all animal facilities (which pet shops are) are REQUIRED to provide check-ins every 24 hours on all animals, whether they're open or closed that day. I had to go in, or have my manager go in, every Monday (when we were closed) to do a welfare check, and you're required to do so too. 5 days a week out of 7 doesn't cut it.

Thank you Diana Heideman. You are one of the good ones; not afraid to get your hands dirty to take care of the animals in your store.

I recall the Uros we kept at the shop I worked at did not drink from the dish either, they just kicked litter into their water but we just kept cleaning the dish out and replacing the water; not so much because we were legally obligated to do so, but because it was proper husbandry.

Unfortunately in the case of Shannon Long... Why he owns a store full of animals that he neglects is just beyond me. If your employees are not getting the job done then YOU are obligated to step in and fix it. Even if it means you may have to do a little cleaning and watering.

Anybody who thinks an animal does not deserve fresh, clean water because they are desert animals should be kicked out of the hobby and held criminally accountable. I have said this over and over again but somehow people just don't get it! It is so basic.

already knew about him and the situation
I think and hope that at a certain point a critical mass will be reached and action will be taken. Apparently this is not a first rodeo, Shannon I think was well known for past actions long before this thread. But perhaps this thread will lead to a more permanent solution for this pet shop.
I think that it is good to reach out to those who may have additional resources to effect change.

For the contacts I made, I sketched out the problem briefly to a contact and then send a link to the thread. After all it you, the posters, whose words and opinions are important, and certainly when outside sources see the range of responses they don't need me to tell them who the Bad Guy is, they can figure it out themselves and I hope help in the good fight for honest transactions and healthy critters.

There are some people viewing this thread that do not know what a native Arizona Collard Lizard should look like... here you go!

And one more for good measure...

I understand that most of you do not need to see this, but there are some very important people that are starting to learn about our hobby most recently.

And they don't get the full extent of that first picture!

Maybe somebody could PhotoShop me up a side by side comparison to really bring it home?

What a beautiful lizard those guys are! I know exactly how you feel about them ever since I was a kid it was such a treat to take pictures of them in their habitat in western Colorado. That was what came to my mind when this post first came up was how could someone just completely disrespect something that is so beautiful and let it get that bad. If you visit like Grand junction, Colorado you will see its picture all over they are so much loved there so I know what Tom means when he talks about how high they are held in Arizona as well. So the fact that they are desert animals and well equipped to go without the essentials makes you think how bad it was for the lil guy with his former owner and on top of that he got more of the same from a place that should have known better and still couldn't take a few minutes to give him a drink and a clean home. Maybe if he was like the pics in Toms last pictures he could have gone awhile without but in that weakened state water is very necessary... He was way past going just a little while without. What a horrible way to die.

So true Brandon... We are definitely giving Shannon the benefit of the doubt here by believing that statement of its origin...

I DO NOT, for one iota, BELIEVE THE "a lady dropped it off like that" statement.

There is no way that is true! No way!

Had to finally get that out there! And, off my chest... Sorry!

That's alright Tom I bet alotta ppl thinkin it too. I've been focusing all my attention on that collard but just seeing the shape the lil guy was in I believe YOU. I think of him as more a representative. There's no way with him a priority like that that the others could be any better off in getting their basic needs met. From what I've seen in pet shops if one is neglected its all of them and any respectable shop has their sick animals in the back being cared for.

Here's the motivation behind James Bolar's statements way back in the first page...

Something to the effect of "I don't know them well, but I do." Lol. "While I'm not associated with the shop, I do know them very well." These were his exact words I believe...

I also heard they run a 'rescue' of some type... A non profit under his store name. So, I'm guessing this is a positive representation of what happens to anything turned into them.

Forgot to attach a picture above...

Now I wonder if he was one of the ones standing around the register that TUESDAY morning.

Shannon mentioned they clean M-F. Lol. Nobody had cleaning that store in three months, imhpo.

No attack. You defended them. Makes you fair game! Explain the difference between the two please. Is the other one the not for profit rescue? Is never heard of neither til recently. Stick with me, no attacks yet, just trying to get help for these animals that you thought I was dreaming about.
