In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Well, OK. Advertising revenue is like trying to hold onto a shadow. The benefits are hard to measure and it is always a very optional part of anyone's business. In many instances I have had people just STOP the payments without a word about it. So income and spending projections based on that kind of income is just foolish of me to do.

MANY people have said that the core value, and in some instances the ONLY value of this site is the Board of Inquiry. Traffic patterns tend to largely support that hypothesis. So the difficulty I could see in the future with enough GUARANTEED (sort of) revenue to meet current and projected expenses, plus just flat out make this worth me doing, had to be based on charging for what people consider to be the real value of this site. When this is coupled with the fact that it would also greatly assist in weeding out the majority of false registrations taking part in conversations that have serious impact on the reputations of the people involved, there seemed little reason NOT to do it this way.

Why do you think that when you go to some sites you see banner ads EVERYWHERE on the pages? In some cases it is so bad that you have difficulty figuring out where the meat is really on that plate you are looking at. Why? Because the only way advertising in that manner will really work is by filling every possible space with income producing ads. That is the tradeoff you face. A whole BUNCH of smaller cheaper banner ads, or a smaller number of more expensive ones, which may not be attractive to many people because of the lack of real tangible returns.

Maybe I could change some things to make the ads more efficient. For instance I could eliminate that one huge 120x600 banner ad on the right hand margin and replace it with 10 120x60 banner ads. Would that work better? No way of telling without doing it, but I certainly would run the risk of losing those people who LIKE that big ad of theirs showing up here, and perhaps NO ONE would want any of those smaller ads. They just wouldn't catch the eye of the readers as well.

There are no guarantees in anything I try. All I can do is try to figure out what I think is the best in compromises and hope that I guessed right about it. If I guess wrong, and see this in time, then I can change things to see if I can make it better.

I just recently went to a brand new banner ad software system that I hope will make things easier and better for people to use (http://www.FaunaAds.com). It also takes quite a bit of the manual workload off of my shoulders as well managing the advertisements.

Now as to charging for people to use the classifieds section, when I converted over to the paid membership plan, that actually was restricted to paid members. But guess what? It basically DIED. Which I strongly suspected would happen. All of the suggestions for me to solely charge for that feature of this site just hit a wrong chord with me. My gut feeling was that it wouldn't work, and from what I saw in that brief period it was a pay for use only section, facts supported this suspicion I had. This was one of those incidents I spoke about where I caught a mistake in time to correct it before it became lethal.

So to any and all of you claiming that that is the route I SHOULD take, please, just forget about it. It is my opinion that it just will not work on this site. Plus it would have done absolutely nothing at all about the verification bar I wanted to put on posting rights within the Board of Inquiry. Perhaps some of you feel that you know better then me what is best for my site, and all I can say is well perhaps you do. You can always tell me "I told you so!" sometime in the future if this site folds up from my decisions. I will give you my forwarded address on the beach when that happens...... :)

There, does that help a little bit? Sorry, but if you want to get into a long drawn out debate about this, I cannot help you. It is a done deal as far as I am concerned and not subject to review at this time. If conditions change down the road, I will be willing to address it again, but for now, it is done.

Thanks. That was more or less what I was interested in. What is your take on what differences in site methodology and focus cause it to work for KS but in your opinionnot Fauna?

My gosh, who cares any more? The horse you're beating died and started stinking a few months ago. Why not bury it and be done with it?

I don't know, and I don't care. I didn't approach it from that angle. I looked at this site as being a unique entity and treated the problems as such. I didn't go to other sites to try to analyze what they were doing. The questions were centered around "what does this site, and myself, need that will also be compatible with what the members here expect to get out of it in return?". If anything, I believe I leaned more towards the later then the former in my decision.

Obviously I care for one. I'm interested in all aspects of small business. The details of this situation interest me. You sound upset. Take a deep cleansing breath....................there...................maybe you shouldn't read this thread anymore if it upsets you.

You did no research regarding other Herp related sites while considering applying revenue enhancement to your site? come on.

Yep. Take it or leave it. I suspect no one else thinks the way I do, so why should I try to see what someone else is doing? If someone else thought the same and had the same identical website, then there would be no reason for THIS site to exist. There would already BE one like it out there.

It would be like me asking someone sitting at the table next to me in a restaurant what I should order for dinner off of the menu. Very little chance that person would have the same tastes in food that I do, so I have to just figure it out on myself based on the options available and what I think would be best for me.

At MOST, I will ask the people here what they think about impending changes, simply because it will impact them most of all. Which I think is a reasonable and prudent thing to do when considering such changes. But no, I really don't care what another website is doing. I have enough of my own to take care of and rarely go to anyone else's anyway.

Well, your outlook flys in the face of most business theory I have ever heard but hey, If it works for you it works for you. That's whats important...........O.K. Karen...I'm ready to stop beating the horse now.

That's just the way I do things, I guess. Back when I was a teenager, my brother and I were working on putting a band (musical) together. Ronnie always wanted to practice and keep on working in the basement. I decided I was going to go out and play music, so that's what I did. Sometimes you just have to jump and not keep sticking your toe in the water to see if it feels warm enough yet.

I saw a guy do that once. He checked the water temp but forgot to look for the Sharks.......woops.

Well Greg, this poll has been up for about a week now and the majority of people who voted seem to agree with you. Maybe your on to something.

I found it interesting that virtually ALL of the negative points, posts, pm's, and emails I received were from the "brotherhood" here...whereas I saw quite a lot of positive feedback from the smaller fish...

Perhaps? Hmmmm.....
