In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

    Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

    Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

    Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Why are Bearded Dragons so expensive? Is it the demand for them right now? Are they hard to breed or something? I remember when Green Iguanas were expensive, but now you can get one for practically nothing. Just wondering

Hi, There's probably more answers than I have for this question, but I'll give you my opinion on this one....
I'd say, depending on what you're looking for as far as age, sex, and colors will play a big role in the price. Just like most animals/herps/etc... the more unusual the colors, the higher the price. After these high dollar colors get into the market more will take over.
Another thing is the care and time into breeding dragons. I know for a fact they're expensive to keep and breed, since we have close to 50 adults and juveniles! To raise the babies up to a safe size to ship and sell, think about food (thousands of crickets, lbs. and lbs. of greens and veggies), UV lights, heat lights, fixtures, housing, and the list geos on. To keep them healthy and growing, you've got to seperate them, feed them well ( babies/juvies/3 times a day&#33, keep their housing cleaned, monitor them, give them baths and swim time, the list goes on. They're not like geckos, snakes, and alot of other reptiles and such that you can put into rack systems with some heat tape and some water and call it a job.
I could go on and on, but what I stated should give you an idea of why they are so much. Keep in mind you can get young dragons that are considered "normals" at a decent price most of the time.

Hi there
Absolutely agree with Bob and Kim, and just wanted to add another note on color. The best looking dragons are SO hard to come by!! While genetics are the most important factor; even when breeding top notch animals, only a few grow out to be really spectaular - and with hatchlings it's next to impossible to tell which ones. Here in the pic are 2 of our breeder females, among our best of 2000, and both looked IDENTICAL as youngsters.
    But, at the same time - while the demand for beardies seems to be growing, you can get great deals on hatchlings - especially during the summertime. They're not as expensive as you might think! You can get a beardie for $35 or $1000+++
It all depends on what you looking for.

Thanks for all the input. I raise Kingsnakes and Corn snakes and am up against the same problems. I should have been a little more specific I guess. I like all reptiles and decided to keep a couple of terriums in my office "just for me". I was not looking for anything out of the ordinary, just someting to watch. I guess all of use who keep more than one or two reptiles are always looking to purchse at less than retail. I am no exception And you all are right, there are a few Beardeds out there priced right, but the shipping pushes the price back up. I guess I will have to stop walking on my lips and wait until I go to the next show.
