Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

So long story short I have been given a Tegu, apparently its 3ft and 6years old. This was not my idea and quite frankly I am not so sure I am ready for such a large lizard. However if I don't take it it will live with a friend of mine who already has WAY too many animals (4 dogs, 5 snakes, 10 turkeys, etc.). The Tegu is coming with and enclosure (4.5ft long and 3ft wide I believe) which I can make fit in my apartment with some adjustment. Now if I take him/her I know I will be able to give it attention it needs but with my friend I am not so confident (with all the dogs, and care wise). So the question is, should I take this animal and possibly give it a better home (although I may not be able to keep it)? Or should I let my friend take it and hope for the best? Sorry if this doesn't make a lot of sense, its an odd situation for me. Thanks
 
Also if you have any tips or info. Such as if a 6 year old animal is even likely to get used to a new owner. Thanks again
 
Do you have any experience with reptiles?

If not, the tegu might be better off with your friend.

Space is another issue. That cage is probably too small. Minimum I've seen recommended for an adult tegu is 8ft x 3 ft, with enough depth to fill it with substrate so that it can burrow.

So, again, if you're friend can house the tegu more properly, it might be better off with him.

Have you tried contacting any Herpetological societies or reptile rescues in your area to see if they could possibly help?
 
I'm in a pretty rural area so I don't think there are any reptile rescue places near me. I do have some reptile experience, and I am usually the one doing the research and telling my friend the proper way to care for the animals she buys. As much as I hate to say it there isn't anything that can be done about the amount of space for this animal, either I take it and wedge it into my small place or my friend does the same. I hate to sound so irresponsible but like I said I was not involved in the decision to purchase this animal, and believe me the person who bought it got an earful about buying animals for people without thinking/asking. I will do some looking into herpetological societies, thanks for the info.
 
You don't sound irresponsible to me, sorry if I implied that.

Another suggestion would be to post an adoption ad in the adoption forum. I don't know where in Michigan you are, but I know several people who keep herps who live in Michigan. If you put an ad in the adoption forum, perhaps someone with the space and experience the tegu needs will see it.
