In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

My name is Sean Throne and on Jan. 12, 2008 I bought a Hog Island boa from Bill with Alan Bosch Reptiles from his own personal breeding pair of Hog Islands. The next day on Jan. 13, 2008 when I got home form work about 5:00 p.m. the snake was dead. I contacted Bill the same day to notify him about this issue and to see about a replacement. Bill told me to freeze the snake and he would be coming to get it on Wednesday Jan. 15, 2008 and to call him then. When I called him he informed me that I would have to bring the snake back to him so he could perform a necropsy and depending on the cause of death he would see what he could do about giving us a good deal on a replacement and told me the snake was healthy when it left his store. I have chosen not to take the snake to him if I'm going to have to pay for the replacement and I wanted to let everyone know about my experience with Bill.

Interesting that he would want you to freeze it for a necropsy knowing that it would ruin the body for full necropsy results.

Freezing it would also make it unable to be returned positive for IBD.

Have a necropsy done anyway and see what else is found. A snake dying that fast is not the norm by any means.

You actually picked up what appeared to be a healthy snake, in person, took it home and it died? That's the whole story???

Sounds odd.

Hey guys,
This is bill w/ alan bosch reptiles.
That’s not exactly the way it happened but it’s close.
Sean purchased the hog, that we produced. It was nine weeks of age and was in apparent perfect health.
He called me a few days later stating that it had past the next day. I did find this to be odd having had it in our care for all that time and seen no problem what so ever. He was unable to get it to me the same day so I told him to freeze it. I wanted to have the necropsy done to make sure it had not been cooked or crunched. As long as the snake had died and not been killed, I would gladly replace it.
I was never going to p/up the snake. He was to return it to me on three occasions and failed to do so.
I am truly sorry for the lose of the animal and will still replace the snake as long as it was not mistreated and thus leading to it’s death.
We at alan bosch reptiles stand behind our animals and want every one to be satisfied. If you have any questions or comments, we can be easily reached at

Ok, here's the thing.

If you work for allen, you MUST know about IBD. If you know about IBD you MUST know that freezing will make a positive ID of IBD veritably impossible. IF you are experienced with reptiles you must know that putting a dead animal in the refrigerator even for a few days will have no effect on cause of death determination.

Why did you tell him to freeze it? Is it company policy to tell customers who have had animals die to freeze them prior to necropsies?

As long as Bill is willing to work with the buyer to get a replacement, so long as it wasnt mistreated in anyway, his offer sounds more than fair to me. It is indeed a shame that the animal died so quickly. Just doesnt sound right especially if bill is saying that the snake was in perfect health when it left.

Just out of curiosity.. was the snake shipped or did william pick up the snake in person?

Mike,

No the snake did not have the chance to overheat. We were very careful to make sure the car was warm, but not too warm!

Looks like he drove it home... Randy

Mr. Throne,
Is there a specific reason you are not willing to return the dead snake to Mr. Albright?
It almost sounds as though there is something lurking below the surface here.

And I agree with Mr. Pollock here, I am constantly amazed at how many supposedly knowledgeable people suggest FREEZING a snake prior to necropsy.
Refrigerate, refrigerate, refrigerate if you really want to stand any real chance of getting thorough necropsy results.

If it was me and a snake died the next day after purchasing it I would call right away. Don't mean that this person should have behaves similarly, that's just how I would have reacted. On the other hand maybe he was tied-up with other important things and didn't find the time to make a phone call immediately.

There is no specific reason to why I am not willing to return the dead snake to him. Mr. Albright never told me he was willing to replace th snake. He told me he would give us a good deal on a replacement. I have not been able to return the snake myself because it's almost a 2 hour ride to him and my wife and I both work 6-7 days a week and the only day I was able to return it I was going to have to take it to the flea market by 4 or 5p.m. and give it to Alan Bosch and I would rather deal with Bill since Alan had nothing to do with the situation. They are only at the flea market on Saturday and Sunday and my wife and I both work those days ad we don't get off in enough time to get there before they leave. I would like to get this situation resolved and give Bill a chance to fix the problem. I really don't understand what he can do now since the snake has been frozen for almost a month now.

Dan,

The day we bought the snake from Bill they were moving out of their store and moving over to only selling at the flea market and all of the animals in the store with the exception of a couple monitors and larger snakes were in deli cups used to ship reptiles.......The only phone number we had at the time was the store number and I had to get another number from some friends of mine who run a pet store and deal with Bosch and the number was at their pet store and they were all ready closed for the night. I certainly was not too busy to call.....trust me I tried!

It doesn't matter what they want to do with the dead snake. If that's what they require (maybe just for "proof of death") to replace it, you have to abide by their TOS. That's what most people ask for. Have you provided them with at least a picture of the dead snake?

Bill has never asked me for a picture of the dead snake. I am completely new to this sort of situation and have only followed the advice of many of my friends who are more familiar with this type of thing!

William,, not trying to give you a bad time here but usually the BOI is for those who have had a problem on a deal that they can not work out with the seller. Here you were asked to return the animal but as of a month later you have not returned it. Even WalMart wont give you a refund or exchange if you don't return the product to them .

You said that no exchange was offered only a discount on another animal and the seller said that if the animal was returned and it was determined to have died of causes other than over heating or injury in your care that they would replace the animal.. Well an exchange has been offered here so take the snake back to them, yeah it's frozen but that is what they asked for. If they don't exchange the animal within a a reasonable time after you return it then let folks here know... Randy

ahh ok. i missed that post. thanks randy.

William if I were you, definately make every possible effort to get the snake back to Bill. I understand that you're new to this kind of thing and have not been put into this kind of situation, but just one conversation wont solve anything. If you felt you were put in a place to where the only way of getting a replacement is by a discounted price, then you shouldve really questioned his response.

A single misunderstanding can make a simple situation seem a lot worse than it really seems. You should go back and talk to Bill and arrange a time to where you can get the snake back to him, as long as he willing to accept the snake back to make sure that it wasnt anyone's fault that the snake died, and it did indeed die from natural causes...in which this case he is doing so.

Keeping a frozen snake in the freezer is going to just sit there until you decide what you want to do. Either you want a replacement or you dont. Simple as that. Bill just threw the ball in your court so instead of replying to this thread, grab the phone number Bill posted and give him a call and try to work things out.

Good luck!!

if a snake has IBD ...would there not be give away symptons?

Would the buyer have seen these symptons before the animal died?

just asking...I am not an IBD expert...just seeking information
