I've noticed that alot of people put more that one male with a female during the breeding season, then they don't know exactly who fathered the clutch till they hatch. Why is this?:shrug01:

If you are using co-dom or dominant snakes there are no recessive genes to mix you up, so anything that looks normal, is a normal. However if you put an Albino (recessive), or a Genetic Stripe (recessive) or a Caramel Albino (recessive) male with a normal female you would have no clue who the father is in the mix.

Examples of Co-dominant Pastel Jungle, Woma Tiger, Yellow Belly, Mojave, Red Axanthic, Platinum, Butter, Cinnamon, Fire, Calico, Spotnose to list a few

People will 'back up breed' a snake with more than one male in case the first male doesn't work out. Normally you want to back up breed with a do or co-dom if you first bred with a recessive so once you get babies you know who the father is. Next year I'll breed my female pied with both the albino and the pastel, if I get normal looking babies I know that the breeding between the albino and pied worked and I've got double albino/pied hets, if I get pastels I know that was the father and I have pastel/ het pied. It's kind of like a back up plan so if you first males doesn't have what it takes, hopefully your second one does and you don't waste a breeding season.

Some breedings I do use more than one male and some I don't, it depends on whether I want something specific out of that project or not.

Our albino female has been quite active this season and bred with a black pastel 100% het hypo male for 3 or 4 lock ups then he just decided he didn't like her much, lol.
So I backed that up with a lesser male.
The normals will all be 100% het albino and the lessers and/or the black pastels will also be 100% het albino.
The black pastels that might come from her would also be 50% het hypo.
You can use a recessive female but I would not use a recessive male and do a "cocktail" snake.

Not know who is going to be the one to sire the clutch is half the fun ;)

What if the pastel and the albino hit and the only genes the pastel throws are wild type :shrug01:

:iagree:
I have run normal females with all codom males, and gotten all "wild type" babies in a 5 egg clutch. Bad luck for sure, if I had run her with a pied?? I would have thought "most likely" they were hets, but I would have been wrong.

Been there. Done that too.
spider x normal in 2008 = 5 eggs....5 normals.
Talk about crappy odds.
Personally I would not use a male codom and male recessive otherwise if you hit bad odds, you may sell normals as hets without realizing it.

Ok,thanks for all the info.I understand now.It makes sense that in case your first male doesn't take, hopefully the next one will.
