I have found it is easiest to burn the holes into tubs with a soldering iron. I have also found that it is very time comsuming. I wanted to be able to burn more than 1 hole at a time. I decided that this is the best way. I purchased 11 cheap soldering irons(this was all the store had if there were more I'd of bought more, @ $4 each) and built a mounting bracket for them. I have them plugged into 2 six outlet stripes. It seems to be working very well so far. I burned 20, twenty quart tubs in about 5 minutes. I flip the tubs upside down and slide them into the unit. 11 holes burned in the time of 1. I slide it down a little and do it again. Then spin it around and do it again. 44 holes in the time of 4. I only have about 100 6 qt tubs to do still I hope it takes less than an hour LOL.

It looks like a futuristic torture device!!!! Damn I wouldn't want to piss you off. Good idea, let us know how long it took you to do all the tubs.

Dan, yeah they are sterilite. I got them at big lots for 88 cents each. I bought all they had. They are the older model with the flat bottom. They also had some of the same ones at target for 99 cents each. They are the newer ones with the raised groove all the way around the bottom. I liked the older ones better. Plus they were cheaper.

Congrats!!! I have been thinking for a long time to make a similar device, but never got around to it. At least now I can use your device for a base idea of what I would be building with a few modifications.

A few disclaimers. I would suggest that any burning of plastic be done outdoors. There is alot of fumes and such so alot of ventilation is critical. Next I am looking into a material that is heat resistant to use as the front panel. The wood does the job but it is also expanding very slowly around the front of the irons. This expansion causes the irons to wiggle a little bit. I'm not sure what to use so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

That is a brilliant contraption you have!
It took me forever to burn my holes in...wish I would have thought about that type of thing to use!!!

Jeremy, Now you should buy as many tubs as you can find, burn holes in them and sell them at the reptile shows for $5.00 ea.

People will gladly pay extra for something that they don't have to do.

I know I'm guilty, but it is worth it for me to pay extra for deli cups that already have the holes pre-punched. I know I would pay extra to get my tubs for my racks "pre-punched" as well..........

Maybe sheet metal?

Sam is right. I'd love to buy prepunched Sterilites because I have this terrible problem of burning myself w/the iron.

That is a great idea Sam....
Sell pre holed bins....hmmmmm....
OT but, where does everyone get their deli cups? I have eggs starting to drop a bit faster and realize I don't have that many deli cups anymore....

When you put Derrick to work pre-holing bins, don't tell him it was my idea, he's too big to have mad at me.

I get my supplies from Superior enterprise. Great products, great prices, great customer service. they are ummmm, Great!

a fairly thick peice of hardwood ? sounds like its loosening up the glue in the pressboard.
that is a good price for the tubs , and ide love to get the flat ones .

is that the last of the last in that style ? or can they order them still that you know of ?

Sam, I had thought of reselling the tubs after burning. I'll give it a shot at the next show I do. I they sell well, I'll be buying some geckos from you.

Justyn, I had thought of some type of metal. The problem I see with that is it will heat up and then I have to worry about burning myself on that. I was thinking about the ruber and asphault material used to protect wood decks from BBQ grill ashes. I'll see if I can find any of that.

Dan, Big Lots is a closeout store. They buy the end stock for all sorts of products. Unfortunately when its gone thats it. They can't get anymore. I had thought about a nice piece of ash or oak. Those are still wood though and over time who knows what will happen to it.

Shannan, I get my stuff from superior as well. I do not use delis for eggs though. I use tupperware sandwhich containers. I get them at Walmart, 5 for $1.

Excellent idea Jeremy! When I put holes in my tubs I used the old fashion method, the drill. Needless to say it took me about 1½ weeks do finish. You way is so much easier and next time I need holes I’m using you idea…

oh ok

Thanks
basically the hardwood will just last longer , the irons will probably burn out the holes and loosen up a bit after awhile .
i just think it would hold together longer .
OR
i would say use a peice of sheet metal or something else over the peice of wood or the pressboard to reinforce it and hold them in position , then you may not need to replace the wood very often .
