My point was that as a people, as citizens, we have more rights now than ever before (meaning not only white males with money, but minorities, women, gays, handicapped, etc.).
I don't believe either of us is right or wrong. We just see things differently.
I believe the issue here is that we are looking at the term "rights" in completely different lights. What you are discussing are privileges, in that they have been granted by the government, meaning that they apparently did not exist until the government granted them. And if the government can GRANT them, then there is certainly no reason at all why they can't be rescinded.
I am talking about basic rights inherent to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness that are whittled away by permits, restrictions, controls, taxes, zoning, and every other little infringement and restriction at the disposal of government that you can think of. Anything you want to do that requires a permit means you are asking the controlling agency for PERMISSION to engage in that activity. You have NO
right at all, since a permit CAN be denied. If you have to pay a fee or tax or fill out some form beforehand, then you can be denied if you refuse to do so. THESE are NOT rights at all.
You cannot get married without a license. You cannot buy land without paying taxes on it. You cannot build a house without a permit. You cannot engage in any business without a multitude of permits and taxes involved. You cannot have a child without having him or her registered with a social security number, which means a form you MUST fill out. Try to buy any goods or commodities and refuse to pay sales tax on them.
I'm sure that even the few things that don't require government approval or taxation beforehand or after the fact probably have some controlling strings somewhere that we are in violation of one way or another and just ignorant of that fact.
Matter of fact, I think you could make a much shorter list simply by trying to come up with a list of ABSOLUTELY INVIOLABLE
rights, that cannot be taken away from a citizen, no matter what happens. An honest to goodness RIGHT is something that simply cannot be restricted or taken away from you under ANY circumstances. Seriously try to come up with such a list and see how many items you can come up with.
I'm seriously surprised that even bodily functions haven't been taxed with impact fees..... With all the talk of "carbon taxes", I seriously expected exhaling carbon dioxide to become taxed in some way.
