    =====================

I am still waiting on my developer to finish up on the Classifieds Control Panel so I can use it to encourage members into becoming paying members. Google Adsense has become a real burden on the viewing of this site, but honestly it is the ONLY source of income now that keeps it afloat. I tried offering disabling the ads being viewed by paying members, but apparently that is not enough incentive. Quite frankly, Google Adsense has dropped down to where it barely brings in enough daily to match even a single paid member per day. But it still gets the bills paid. But at what cost?

So even without the classifieds control panel being complete, I believe I am going to have to disable those Google ads completely and likely disable some options here that have been free since going to the new platform. Like classified ad bumping, member name changes, and anything else I can use to encourage this site to be supported by the members instead of the Google Adsense ads.

But there is risk involved. I will not pay out of pocket for very long during this last ditch experimental effort. If I find that the membership does not want to support this site with memberships, then I cannot support your being able to post your classified ads here for free. No, I am not intending to start charging for your posting ads here. I will just shut the site down and that will be it. I will be done with FaunaClassifieds. I certainly don't need this, and can live the rest of my life just fine without it. If I see that no one else really wants it to survive neither, then so be it. It goes away and you all can just go elsewhere to advertise your animals and merchandise.

Not sure when this will take place, and I don't intend to give any further warning concerning the disabling of the Google Adsense. Just as there probably won't be any warning if I decide to close down this site. You will just come here and there will be some sort of message that the site is gone, and you have a nice day.

I have been trying to make a go of this site for a very long time. And quite frankly, I am just tired of trying. I had hoped that enough people would be willing to help me help you all have a free outlet to offer your stuff for sale. But every year I see less and less people coming to this site, much less supporting it financially. That is fine. I tried. I retired the SerpenCo business about 14 years ago, so retiring out of this business completely is not that big if a step for me, nor will it be especially painful to do. When I was in Thailand, I did not check in here for three weeks. I didn't miss it even a little bit. So if you all want it to remain, it will be in your hands. I really don't care either way.

    =====================
Some people have indicated that finding the method to contribute is rather difficult. And I have to admit, that it is not all that obvious. So to help, here is a thread to help as a quide. How to become a contributing member of FaunaClassifieds.

And for the record, I will be shutting down the Google Adsense ads on January 1, 2025.

Can I make a blue leo?

Can I make a line-bred blue leo?

I'm curious to see what other leo breeders and fanatics think about the possibility of producing a true "Blue Bell". It's a project I've been working on for two seasons and I am seeing a little progress. I guess my question is - Do you think it is possible to selectively breed out the yellow background color?

I mean, breeders have obviously been able to intensify the yellow...make it orange and spread it all over...hence the Super Hypo Tangs we all love. But I'm thinking getting rid of yellow is another story. It'd be similar to a line-bred melanistic project, most of which I don't think have been all that successful. The yellow background seems to be the "dominant" color...does that make sense?

Anyway, give me your opinions. The plan is to hold back the Bells with the most lavender and keep crossing them with the hopes of an all "Blue Bell" with red eyes. :hehe:

Here's the male that started it all. He's about 3 1/2 years old and still displays a lot of nice lavender.

Here's an 05 (first generation)

And one from this season...far right (second generation)

I suppose most things are possible. Interestingly enough, after many generations of breeding aviculturists have yet to produce a red Budgerigar. Doesn't hurt to try, though!

I supose it depends on your definition of blue??

I say go for it. It will probally take quite a few more generations, that's for sure.

I voted "Sure!". :)

The Blue Bell pics you've posted so far have me drooling in anticipation. I can't wait to see what comes out of this project in the next couple of seasons. :)

Hey Paul,
I would seriously go with lavender over blue..... My definition of blue is that it is a primary color.... Leopard gecko simply do not have blue pigmentation.... Breeders have been able to intensify yellows and oranges in leos because these are colors that exist naturally in leos..... I am guessing it would take nothing short of producing a new recessive or co-dominant, blue gene (lol blue gene) to make a true blue leo....

As far as being able to selectively breed out the yellow, I think it will be a slow go but will eventually be done....

I do not think calling them lavenders will take anything away from your awesome project and it would be a much more accurate description....

And that concludes my honest opinion....LOL

Doesnt TUG have an xanthic(lack of yellow) snow line? if you breed those to your bells that would effectively remove the yellow would it now?

Yeah...by "blue bell" I mean lavender. :raspberry lol Just a catchy name. I should've been more clear on that. Kinda like the "red stripe" you know...it's not really red, but close enough. I agree with Gregg that a true blue (as in the primary color blue) would require a freaky new gene at best. But, since lavender is the best we have to work with...and it comes to the closest to blue, that's the idea. Bells seems to have a natural tendancy towards more lavender in their bands for whatever reason, IMO.

That's the part I'm excited about...hopefully

Hmmm...good point. I did a cross with a line bred snow last season and I'm waiting to see babies hatch from those hets. That would reduce the yellow and leave a white-ish and lavender gecko...theoretically.

I guess what I'm really wondering is if the lavender can be made to spread and take over the yellow, the same way orange takes over the lavender/black banding on hypos.

Thanks for the input :)

Well, now that that is cleared up, yes, I think you could make a high lavender or even full lavender Bell. It will take MANY generations though, but I say GO FOR IT!!!!

I totally think you can do it, Paul! If you need any help, gimme a ring!

I do think those Mack Snows will help you a bit in your journey :)

ive seen leos where the (usually yellow or orange) bands are super thin, and others where they are super thick with hardly any room for the other bands. do you think that we could line breed for thicker or thinner bands? that seems highly possible to me, leaving mostly or only the lavender bands.

I dont know. :dunce: LOL I dont think its possible to 'rid' them of those bands, but you could probably loose the yellow.

Im thinking, if they were Jungle or Stripe patterned, they might have more of the backround color(lavender), overall. On the other hand if they were Reverse Striped or "Patternless" there would be less.

I not only think that it is possible but that we will see something along these lines in the next few years. :dgrin:

I am of the belief that yellow (or some derivative thereof) is the backround color and cannot be totally wiped out, however, a lavendar thick-banded Leo is definitely a possibility and something that might be more than welcome when everyone else is trying so hard to get brighter and brighter Leos with little or no pattern in every shade of orange, red, and yellow. I still think a nice bold jungle is one of the nicest looking Leos morphs ever produced. When they have a nice amount of lavendar to contrast the yellow, it looks even better. That being said........Calling it "Blue" is something that could be considered a bit of a stretch.

Paul, maybe try some of the Mack Pastel in there. I think it would help tone down the yellow, and the pastels have alot of lavender too. It might work very nicely w/ the Bells.

I agree that you'll possibly get an all lavender banded. I think going the Line bred as well as the pastel co-dom snow route will only hatch you out bell snows at best. Always ,Always keep in mind though "freakish" can and does happen!

"Blue Albinos........Update 12/03/05 - After three years of test breeding the "blue spot" female (pictured in my new book), the results of which have proved fruitless as to being able to duplicate a hopeful new mutation, the mystery has been solved by José V. Torres, Ph.D., Professor, Medical Microbiology and Immunology, School of Medicine, University of California - Davis."
