Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them.     Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Well, sort of relates to chat but am thinking this post is more suited for the computer forum watchers.....

At some point - if the computer has been on for a period of time or I've been bumped off chat a few times - I am not able to go back into the chat room. It happens to others as well and to those actually in the room they see the person come in...looks like they are quiet for a little bit...and then they disappear.

My question is - is there a way to kick the java chat in the butt to get it back to working like it's refreshed? Closing the window and reopening a new one just nets the same blank screen.

Thanks in advance for any ideas or fixes.
 
I have a CRON job running on the server that checks the status of the chat engine every 5 minutes and automatically restarts it if it does not respond correctly.

Otherwise I can restart it manually, but that doesn't do you much good unless I am right there and can drop into my server as root and give it a swift kick.

As far as I am aware, there is nothing you can do from the user side of the system to affect what is happening on the server.

However, if you feel that the problem is on your own browser, probably the only thing you can do is to reboot your computer. I have found that opening up multiple IE windows, running a few java screens, and then viewing a PDF file is a sure ticket to REBOOT LAND. I know this will come as a shock to everyone, but Microsoft products are not especially stable. :no_evil01

g/d it....sorry, things froze up on me and I had to reboot. BTW - I don't have that signature line for nothing. It's funny...but it makes you think....

BTW - Rich it's nothing to do with the chat software. It just happens once in a while to me (and I think a few other folks) after a time. A reboot does the trick and wipes the slate clean. I just didn't know if there was a way of doing that with java without having to reboot. I'll just keep doing it the old fashion way - get ticked off, hit the power bar switch with my toe and pace the house for a minute or two. :)

No, from my experience, if IE chokes, Windows has to be restarted. No "ifs", "ands", nor "buts" about it.

But wait! Maybe the next version of Windows will CERTAINLY fix all of the bugs that have been in place since the beginning.

My favorite fix that Microsoft did was to get rid of the dreaded Black Screen of Death. How did they do that? Simple! They made the screen BLUE instead....... :rofl:
