    In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

do what is your favorite , or what you will have fun with the most . by all means do it , BUT only because you enjoy it .....the rest may or may not fall into place like everyone is saying ....and if you do it for fun when/if you make any money it will be an added bonus . takes alot of time , money, and you must be dedicated. and IMO the way to even possibly make money is start small EXAMPLE: those "first-time " animals MAY only pay for themselves and some of the extra costs of food,heat, and keeping them in top-health (vet-visits) their first year of production . be wise , take time , do research , and dont "run and jump into it " :)
 
My motto is " Buy High, Sell Low ". Works every time. Just try to produce the fattest, best examples of any morph and someone will want it. Every once in awhile someone scores by being first with a new morph but don't count on it. I only sell offspring to make room for the next season's hatches. My payment is seeing each new hatchling. If you want to make money, buy real estate.

But I couldn't care less about buying or selling real estate! I love keeping and breeding reptiles, so why not try and turn my hobby that I love into a way to make a living? That's the American Dream! :crazy03:
 
I like to think of myself as proof that you can make a mark no matter how saturated the market.

That said, I have spent a great deal more than I have earned in the course of my hobby/business. Eventually some day it'll probably even out, but the problem with loving what you're selling is that you're constantly buying more, constantly holding back more animals than you need to, etc....

I own more male leopard geckos than females. That's not good, when you could reasonably house large groups of females together but need an individual cage for each and every male. That's the problem with loving what you do!


Don't quit your day job, but don't ever think of stopping doing what you love. Just be reasonable about what you set out to accomplish every step of the way.

Well, Dan, I guess you are right. It depends on what you call an "ok living". I do ok. I live in a nice, middle class neighborhood with my family. My kids have everything they need, and then some! I do sacrifice some, but don't we all? I drive a 10 year old car (it's a nice one though, with a new radar detector hehee!), I do not shop at Neimans or Dillards anymore. But I woudn't shop there anyway, even if I could afford to LOL. Now granted my husband has a job as a zookeeper (not a high paying position), so we are a two income family, truly. But most families in this day and age are as well. The difference is we have a business we run out of our home, and it is truly a business. We pay taxes every year on our business, we save every business receipt for tax time LOL. We have a seperate bank account for our business and the business name "H.I.S.S." is on the account. So what I am trying to say is, I am not just a hobbiest, although I do love my hobby, if that makes any sense. It is a business.

Like I said in my previous post, it is very possible but it takes a lot of time and money, also a deep commitment to what you are doing. It has taken me years to get to where I am at with the leopard geckos, years of hard work and sacrifice. It's worth it to me though, because I am doing what I love and making a living doing it. Nothing wrong with that!

I have a plan to payoff what I invested last year to get everything going within the next two seasons. I am also hoping to maybe, be able to put some money towards the higher electric bills, feeder bills, and incidental bills..But I knew starting out it isn't about making money. It was just a great hobby for me and actually kept me out of the malls and jewelry stores...I was a shop a-holic...now I buy bugs instead...
Family still thinks I went nutty....raising roaches in my house....digging through dirt for eggs, talking about poop.
If you are looking to get rich, this isn't the industry. It takes too many man hours and too much sacrifice to ever consider yourself monetarily rich. I think the only "richness" you'll get out of this hobby is watching your Leos' life cycles and learning all about them and meeting some really neat people in the herp business. Except Overton....he is weird...
