Some like 'em hot!
Just walked past my red-tailed rats' cage and did a double-take: one of them had the other one's head in its mouth well past the neck!! This is a well-fed breeding pair in a large, naturalistic vivarium.
I whipped off the lid and grabbed each snake in mid-body. The one that was "eating" the other one immediately opened wide, whereupon the "eatee" yanked itself backwards and out. Then they both coiled tightly to my hand and started attacking my arm. (Fabulous.
)
After disentangling myself (which took awhile), I inspected each one and then separated them into different cages. The one was swallowed up to about two and a half inches past its head, but seems fine. Both are now in a heightened state of awareness/aggression, of course.
To reiterate, these snakes are fed regularly and are by no means starving. They are healthy, CB, breeding adults. Has anyone heard of such a thing happening ever before?
Adrenaline is still flowing...
