In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Change in karma ratings

A long while back, I disabled the capability for anyone to give another member negative karma, because I felt it was being abused by some members. But honestly, lately I have read some posts that I just flat out believe DESERVE to get negative feedback from other members. Yeah, this may get abusive again and need to be shut down, but since I am making a bunch of other changes around here right now, I figure I'll give this one another go around the merry-go-round (you have to wonder who came up with THAT name!) and just see what happens.

I never used it all that much when it was available, but there are times when someone just begs for it.

Hopefully it gets used in the way it was designed to be.

I only occasionally ever used the negative Karma. Only if a post really yanked my chain. But I admit to missing it a time or two since it's departure.

Now, where were those posts. :reddevil:

J/K Hopefully people will be a bit more responsible with it. Some people actually do deserve it from time to time.

And on the subject of Karma.....A glitch perhaps??? Sorta stood out there when I went to check out the goodies.

No, it's not a glitch. I actually gave you karma.....

Hmm, I can see that I need to change the karma point calculation algorithm values....

I'd say. I gave Laura karma today and it gave her over 21,000 points. I hit someone with bad karma and as far as I can tell they weren't even affected. On top of that , my karma was almost double today from what it was yesterday.

One thing I have noticed tho. It only shows in the user CP. If you scroll over the green dots on someone's post , the glitch doesn't register. At least not yet.

One of the Jedi twins now appears to be #5 in karma points...

Now THAT is messed up. LOL.

Wacky don't even cover it.....dang. We got a couple of REAL winners on the top 10 positive karma list....

Make it better please Rich, this is scaring me. It's like an alternate universe or something, where scum walk among the non-scum and are wlecomed with open arms.

Yeah, I didn't get much sleep today......my posts may be a bit off kilter.

Ouch! I was playing with the settings to change the way the rep power is calculated and afterwards ran a routine that is supposed to recalculate that function based on the new settings. I think it did that, since the rep power for a few people I checked is REALLY low, but for some reason the karma (the admin section still calls it "reputation", so if I say that, it's really the renamed karma system I am talking about) level itself went through the roof.

I seriously doubt my programmer can "fix" it by figuring out all the positive and negative karma applied over the years, so I strongly suspect he's going to tell me all he can do is to clear those values completely. Which on one hand, I do hate for everyone to lose those karma points, but on the other hand, there are also a lot of people who got abused by that system over the years, that this may be the only way to correct those abuses.

I'll have to see what my programmer says, but don't be surprised if the karma system is a clean slate real soon. It will take about 24 hours for the ratings to change at the bottom of the forum main page, since that is only calculated once per 24 hours, and that just took place.

What I want to do when this is straightened out (sure, I don't have anything better to do right now....... ) is to weigh the karma power (in other words, how much power does a member have when they wish to give you positive or negative points) much more heavily on active participation rather than length of time as a member. So post count will weigh more heavily, and the amount of time being a member will mean much less.

I had hoped I could do some minor surgery in order to accompish this, but apparently not. I have NO idea why the actual karma point count went up so high for nearly everyone. What I tried to do shouldn't (famous last words) have done that.......... :shrug01:

Oh well, guess we needed to have one big blow out during this upgrade.......

Now when the heck is someone going to write a spell check mod for this new version?

When I saw that my karma number had jumped to 11000+, I figured you were reworking the system (either that, or Ron Sims had a big boatload of rep power, lol) and thought nothing of it. When I came online this morning, for some reason I noticed my rep power was down to single digits (7). I probably wouldn't have seen it, but we were just talking about it last night in chat.
Thanks for explaining.
