In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Changes addressing the ad bumping problem..

Recently I was made aware of some issues concerning members spending an apparent inordinate amount of time and effort bumping their ads within the classifieds section, sometimes to the extent that it appears they were bumping the ads on an hourly basis. I do applaud their industriousness, but from a practical standpoint, there really isn't anyway I can let that sort of practice continue. I believe potential buyers WANT to see new ads as often as possible, displaying new stuff for sale that they didn't see yesterday when they browsed through those classified sections. Chances are, that if they weren't inclined to buy what they saw yesterday, they really aren't going to be suddenly inclined to buy it today when they see it again. There is also the problem that having the same ads bumped over and over again, makes the site appear stagnant, even thought there may be lots of new ads placed, but the bumping just pushed them onto the back pages so quickly that the front page makes it APPEAR that nothing new has been added.

So, no, this really isn't a good thing for this site nor most of the people posting ads here trying to attract customers.

Furthermore, one of the few perks I am able to provide in order to entice members to become PAYING members to help support this site financially, is that the Classifieds Control Panel (which, incidentally, non paying members CAN use the basic functions of) has an added perk in that those paying members can use it to easily bump and highlight their ads from a single page. The bump/highlight function does so for a number of threads per 30 day period, and is scaled such that the higher level paid memberships get more bumps/highlights, than the lower level paid memberships. Obviously, I want this to be attractive to members in order to give them incentive to spring for a paid membership. But honestly, if non paying members just go ahead and bump their ads manually by simply making a reply to their ad (normally with nothing more than "BUMP" posted in the rely), well this sure shoots the hell out of my hopes. But honestly until I started seeing this getting WAY out of hand, I really wasn't all that concerned about the paid membership aspect of it. But now that it is out of hand, then I might as well address ALL aspects of the problem now before it gets MUCH worse.

My programmer has developed some custom coding that in effect limits replies BY the author of a classified ad thread in such a way that someone else must post in that thread before they are able to make a reply. This was done in lieu of ceasing replies completely by the author so that the author of the classified thread will be able to reply to questions within that ad to correspond to potential customers. So, say for instance Joe Blow creates a new classified ad, and wants to bump that ad after there have been no replies to it. Well, that will be blocked. Unless and until someone ELSE posts in that thread, Joe cannot reply again to that ad. But if someone ELSE posts in that ad, asking something, like "What will shipping be to zip code XXXXX?", Joe is then free to post a reply in order to be able to answer that question. And then Joe will NOT be able to make another reply until there is another reply made by someone else. See how that works?

BTW, that applies to the Paid Membership Levels as well. The only authorized method any longer to bump ads is via the function offered in the Classifieds Control Panel. Which, by the way, if you haven't stumbled on that Classifieds Control Panel yet, here is how you access it -> http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/forums/classifieds.php?. This link should be at the top of the page in your User CP page when you need it.

I will be increasing the number of allowed bump/highlights for the paid memberships shortly to make this option much more attractive to them, as the numbers I originally chose were at a time when traffic in the classifieds was much lower than it is now. Things have changed, and I need to try to keep in step with the increased needs the paid membership needs to have this fair to them for the money they spend to help out this site.

Yeah, I can hear you thinking that this is going to be easy to get around and cheat on simply by getting someone else to alternate posts with you on your ads. :NoNo: There is a new infraction in place for this sort of thing, and I have asked the mods to keep a close eye on this. The infraction level will be light at first, but increase quickly as I feel word has gotten around about this policy change. So yeah, you CAN get some free bumps before getting banned for three days. I guess for some people that's much better than paying $25....

I am considering re-enabling the Participant level membership for those people who may have only a very limited number of animals or goods to sell, but would like to at least bump that ad a few times using a legitimate method to do so.

Anyway, I'm really hoping you all will be considerate of others, and take this in the spirit I am presenting it. I'm trying to make this site as effective for as many people as possible to be able to sell what they are advertising. That means that everyone has to bend a little to share the limited resources that the first page in any classified ad forum represents. Yes, I know everyone would like THEIR ad to be at the top of the first page all of the time, but that just cannot happen. Trust me, I don't need the headaches of having to deal with something like this, so I am giving what I consider as THIS compromise a shot to see how it works out.

What happens if it doesn't? Well, the easiest and most effective way for me to end the bumping problem is to end the ability for anyone to REPLY to any thread in the classifieds sections. That would be extremely easy to implement, and would end the problem RIGHT NOW. The bumping/highlighting system for paid members would still work, so that wouldn't be affected at all.

So here's he deal. If this fails, I will evaluate WHY it has failed. If it is primarily non paying members mostly responsible, then I will end the ability of non paying members to have ANY replies to their posted ads. Paid memberships only would retain that ability. If I determine that both non paying and paid memberships are equally to blame for continuing the problem, that obviously, replies to classified ad thread will CEASE for everyone.

Listen, I hate this crap too. I just want this site to run smoothly, be enjoyable for viewers, and a lucrative avenue for sellers to sell their wares. If some people want to act like they have to stomp on everyone else's heads in order to get a leg up against their competition, and the site suffers because of it, well, you really don't leave me any other choice but to STOP that from happening. I'm trying to stop it in such a way that it is as easy as possible for most people to swallow. But I don't have to do it that way if my hand is forced, so this is all really in your hands now. I'm all for giving you all as much freedom as possible on this site, but not to the point where I get the headaches dumped on my plate.

Man, I've got to stop these long posts. I'm sure most people stop before they get a third of the way through it, and I'm just wasting my time after that....

Rich... I read the first part... then got tired and skipped to the last line.... whats in the middle

Any idea when the new bump numbers will be available for us paid members.

I have increased the number of bump/highlights for each of the paid membership user groups.

Contributor Level was changed from 10 to 30 per 30 day period.
Benefactor Level was changed from 50 to 150 per 30 day period.
Endowment Level was changed from 200 to 400 per 30 day period.

In case anyone is confused about how this works, this is all done via the Classifieds Control Panel, which can be accessed through your User CP page.

Each ad you bump/highlight is independent of the others, and the clock starts ticking for each ad you activate in that manner. The 30 day countdown is relevant to EACH ad separately, and this isn't a group time limit whereby at the first of the month all ads are cleared and the clock resets to 30 days. It is 30 days for EACH and EVERY ad you activate in this manner.

Again, just to emphasize this point, BUMPING is as of this moment only allowed via the Classifieds Control Panel for paid member groups. Any other bumping done will incur an infraction which can be cumulative to the point of temporarily being banned. The moderators may, at their discretion, delete either the post that causes the bump of the ad, or DELETE the entire ad if they find they are having trouble getting this point across to any particular member.

I was asked to fix this problem, so I fully intend to do so. This is the best way I could come up with to do this task without burning out all my mods having to babysit the classifieds 24/7, so I am asking for everyone's cooperation so I don't have to take more drastic steps to get the results I believe most people are hoping for.

I think this is a good idea. I myself frequently use the search function to look for ads for what I specifically want to buy. Buyers probably know how to use the search as well :)

If Im understanding this correctly.... for each ad you place you get 30 bumps in a 30 day period (contributor level)?

So if you have 2 ads posted... you get a total of 60 bumps in a 30 day period?

Now where's that calculator....

Just in case anyone was wondering (and can't find their own calculator) what this means on a YEARLY basis is:
  • Contributor Level was changed from 10 to 30 per 30 day period. 360 highlighted bumps per year.
  • Benefactor Level was changed from 50 to 150 per 30 day period. 1,800 highlighted bumps per year.
  • Endowment Level was changed from 200 to 400 per 30 day period. 4,800 highlighted bumps per year.

Yes, I know that with those numbers, the higher level paid members can put us right back where we started, but hey, if someone has a better idea that won't cost me for custom programming, then let me know. Limiting the number of ads anyone can make just seems counterproductive when I am trying to GROW this site and get MORE participation within it, so realistically, that just is NOT an option to consider. My guess is that prospective buyers want to see as many options as possible for them to view to consider buying, so I'm not about to try to inhibit that attraction here.

Is that 360 bumps per year..... per ad or total across all your ads?

So if you have 2 ads posted... you get a total of 60 bumps in a 30 day period?

If I recall correctly how my programmer explained it back when he implemented this code, you get 30 highlight/bumps TOTAL in a 30 day period. So you can either bump 30 ads one time each, or you can bump the same ad 30 times. Or any combination of the two strategies as long as the TOTAL number of bumps comes to 30.

Well, let me ask you this. How did it work for you the previous way the system worked when you had 10 bumps per period?

please ask him... cause now Im really confused. Which prolly didnt take much

I honestly never tried it because it was set to 10 and in my mindset ... that would have been 10 total.. and I had I think 9 ads up. So I just did things the manual way

Figured whats the use if I can only bump them once a month. Im better off spending my time doing things manual.

So if you have 9 ads running, you can bump each of them three times a month and have three left over.

I'm sorry, but I just don't believe uncontrolled bumping of ads is going to be good for this site in general. I have to make some sort of compromise that seems reasonable, and this is my shot in the dark at it.

Oh, and in case anyone is reading who didn't catch my drift in earlier posts, MANUALLY BUMPING ADS IS NOW OVER WITH.

The easiest thing to do is for you to simply try it. Since this is the only official way to bump ads here any longer, you might as well do it that way.

The old way when you only had 10bumps with the user cp. That meant 10bumps total per 30days. No matter which section the ads were in, if you bumped 10 seperate ads once, or 1 ad 10times. Once you burnt your 10 up you were done for the month. That's when i usually switched to manual bumps :D

Well, I guess if you need more bumps per month, then THAT is what is going to make the higher level paid memberships more attractive.. :D

Seriously folks, there is no perfect answer to this. The best I can ask is that everyone just try to have some common courtesy with the way you do things here. If someone is looking for THE animal you are selling, they WILL find it.

Sounds fair to me, I just hope no one is thick skulled and ruins it for all of us!

Keep up the good work Rich!

I've got a total of about 15 minutes total, and I used part of it reading this thread (so it will be a short comment, lol).
The statement I quoted above says it all. At my membership level, under the old system, I had 200 bumps per month. It is pretty common knowledge that I dislike advertising, so I'm probably not the best example; but, regardless of how many babies from however many species I may have on hand at a given time, I rarely focus on more than 6 ads at a time. I post up those 6 ads, and I'll bump them once every day or two until I a) get tired of dealing with the people that are responding, or b) decide those ads aren't doing much...then I either post different ads for different animals, or stop for a while (leaving those ads hanging where they are, just in case).
The basic point being that there really isn't much sense to flooding the section every day. Rotating your ads will still keep you visible to potential customers, it saves time and effort, and it helps keep the peace. There is nothing wrong with aggressively marketing your product, or keeping up with the competition...but if two or three people are trying to match ad for ad (or go one ad better), what are they accomplishing? Are they reaching more potential customers? Or are they just posting ads because the other people did? Are the ads going up every day the same, or are they showing the variety of what is available? I guess that given my feelings about advertising, it just surprises me that people don't consider these things sooner, and try different approaches. Then again, maybe they have, and I (and many others) just missed it...if people are advertising in the manner they think is best for them, and it isn't a violation of the rules, then good for them. As has usually been pointed out in the past - why should we try to impose limitations on a few people just because others don't want to expend the same time, effort, or money in their advertising? (Yes, the freebumping was a problem because, as was pointed out, it negated the one of the benefits of paid membership...and a number of people were really taking advantage of it. That is different than posting ads or using the built in options)
