In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Chat room access?

Has anyone used the chat room lately? I just tried to access it and got an error, so I want to see if it's a server problem, or something in my browser causing the problem.

Hmm, it might be my latest browser. I tried IE and it worked fine.... :shrug01:

Until yesterday, chat was working fine for me. As of now, I can't get in. Tried un/re-installing Java to no avail. Also tried IE, which yielded the same results. I consider myself fairly tech-savvy, so it's bugging me that i can't get it to work. Is there currently some issue with chat itself?

I haven't seen anybody in there in a long time.
Java was starting to give me issues a while back, and there was some vague warning that if I didn't correct the problem I would be blocked. I had manually choose to run Java to enter, but I got blocked with this:

I think that's a separate issue that I encountered a while back. I fixed that by going into the Java settings from my PC's Control Panel, and lowering the Java security level to Medium. Here's what I get now:

Harald's issue may be with the browser he is using. The browser on my desktop does the same thing, however my laptop would work just fine.

Until recently, however, when a new issue has cropped up.

I recently hired a new server management company and part of the server hardening process was to shut down any apparently unused ports. Since the port used to access the chat system has likely been unused for a LONG time, they assumed it was just an oversight being left open, and apparently closed it to prevent an unnecessary hole being available into the server.

I have asked them to reopen the port, but quite honestly when I have to do an upgrade of the vBulletin software, I will quite likely just drop the chat system completely since no one seems interested in using it any longer. Heck, I can't remember the last time I saw anyone using it. Heck, if the server management guys give me a good reason why I should dump the chat system right now, it will be gone. I won't be able to give even a feeble argument about why it needs to stay.

Actually, it's gotten a lot of use lately. Well, until someone recently found greener pastures; but I'm definitely one who'd like to see it stay.

Yeah, these guys seem pretty quick so far at handling support tickets. So the port has been reopened.

I've never been able to use it, I get an error message every time.

You might want to try a different browser if you are using a PC. Honestly I have no idea whether the chat system works on mobile devices or not.

Can you post a screenshot of your error message?

Mobile Windows devices should be able to deal with Java well enough to run the chat applet. At least, my Windows tablet had no problems with it. So far, I've yet to find an Android device that will run it.

After reading this, I tried to get in Chat with my Motorola Droid Razr, running an Android operating system. When I tried to get in, it said I needed a new browser.

Yeah, Android just doesn't handle Java well enough to run something that's so heavily dependent on it. I've tried on some fairly high-end phones, running the latest Android version, and it's never worked for me. Java scripts are about as much as Android can do, to my knowledge.

Almost always shows zero people in chat when I look. I'm sure some still use it and like having it here.

I think I have only been in there twice in the last ten years.
