In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Chelsea Richardson-SNAKE KILLER...

As much as I would like to have a necropsy done, its simply not feasible for me right now financially. I have no doubt in my mind that the snake's death was due to severely subpar husbandry and not some other health complication.

And the points I made apply to the forums, all sites, as well.

Having now paid more attention to this site and subsequent BOI I find myself absolutely amazed. I see a community of people that positively WAIT for an oportunity to bring someone down and simultanesouly prop themselves up.

I think it was my third grade teacher that told us to stay away from adjectives like all, every, etc. Someone can almost always come up with an exception. In this case there are too many to list. There are many forums on this site where there isn't a hint of disagreement. Maybe CorwinCritter, you should stay away from the BOI, if it makes you ill, and concentrate on the forums that are less troubling for you.

Why quote me when you're posting right underneath? Anyhow, you're right and people should get upset when animals die needlessly. Bad husbandry should also be addressed as well. But this, as with many threads here and on the numerous reptile forums, web sites, chat rooms, etc..., has gone far beyond. I'm not pointing out any one person, and we haven't even heard all sides, but what is happening here as I've seen so often is conflicts between cults of personalities. A few dominant members of the community and their backers get it on with each other. It's like West Side Story, but with reptiles. That's what my issue is. But, I'll leave it alone. Everyone has the right, especially here, to bicker all they want. I'd just like to see better from our community as a whole.

Sorry Kmurphy, I was typing my post when yours hit. I'll accept your admonishment and clarify as what I meant is that I've seen this behaviour on all of the forums at one time or another at the reptile sites I frequent. I didn't mean all of the forums on this particular site. I have no problem with argument, disagreement, even heated debate. I have a problem when people start acting like ignorant, hatemongering, egotistical hacks. I'm sick of it. There are great people in this hobby, but mainstream sees us (like it or not) too often as a bunch of weirdos and hillbillies. This doesn't help. Note the most recent thread on the BOI and hopefully you'll see my point. I mean, can we at least pretend to be professional business people. If my company treated a customer like that all hell would break loose.

It keeps people from getting confused as to whom hes addressing. and when people quote and reply to a certain post, that post gets locked with it, Like this one will to what im replying to. If it wasnt quoted and replied to like this, and just posted beneath Other people replying in the way i am now, would push that post away from the one youre commenting on. Organization and such. Once you use the forums more itll make much more sense

I can understand that some people are going to take David's side before ours since we don't happen to be chummy with everyone at kre or on the forums. All this again is just going to far, but again I understand that some would be mad, or worried over the death of one of these animals, BUT I will not sit here and say that the snake did not have any neurological problems, david even agreed with us on that when he was over here.

some of you think we haven't posted back because we WERE the cause of the snakes demise, but as in my last post I'm tired of this bashing and this still seems to be a one sided war. David I'm sure you know what you are doing when it comes to snakes but I'm only going to fight this war because you decided you wanted to slander us from the beginning and denying that you agreed with us about the neurological issues of the snake, that wasnt even known to us until the day we called you and all this mess started. On top of that YOU claimed to had rescued an ATB from us when we had posted it up on the forums previously, I am the one who rescued it, it was going to be frozen because the previous owner said it wasnt eating and wasn't doing well at all. It had recently healed from burns when I took him in, since I really didn't have any intrest in ATB's I put it up on the forums after it was eating doing great. so I'll tell you people anything you would like to know.

-we housed the snake in a 10 gallon aquarium with a 75wat repti light and heating pad because my house isnt always warm.

-the substrate used was potting soil without any chemicals and moss to help keep in the humidity, also a bowl of scalding hot water was placed in the tank every day with a towel placed over the top of the tank to add to the humidity.

-the cage was furnished with the bowl that was used for both soaking and the hot water for humidity. Had a small log hide.

-temperature was measured by an exotera thermometer placed inside the tank, the tank was kept between 78 and 88 degrees, hot spot being 88 degrees.

-He was fed every thursday, the same day I fed all my other snakes. He was fed live pinkys.

I handled the snake everyday, he never acted weired, was very active and very beautiful. The snake was in my care. so if there is anything else you would like to know please ask.

Brandon

A ten gallon tank. A 75 watt bulb. A heat pad. Scalding hot water. Never saw any neurological damage.

Let's see....I've got a D...and a U, an M, a B.....ah there's the A and one of the S's and let me see, thre must be another one, ohhhh there it is, the final S.

David is NOT the friend of a lot of people, in fact he and I are more often adversaries than not but not about his husbandry, so your theory, as does most of your story, sucks.

You'd be better off brandon by just staying away from this thread.

but anyways on a different subject for a second here, in louisville kentucky the govt. is trying to put a limit on all animals since this whole pit bull mess. thus making it illegal to have more than three animals including domestic and exotic. This was fueled even more by the media when this 18 year old girl was handling a 12 foot Burmese python by her self, the snake attacked her as she was showing it off, they had to tasser the snake because they supposedly had not other option as too getting the snake off of her.

so i dont know if the bill has been passed yet but for those of you who do live in kentucky you may want to call the gov. office to detest this stupidity and help make sure we are all able to keep our animals be it dog, cat, snake, or scorpion. (fish are not included in this, so if you own any, your safe ^_^)

I dont know nor care who you are and also i dont care if you and he are adversaries, so why dont you butt out and mind your own unless you really have something to contribute to this other than stupidity k^_^

This sounds to me like a couple people with the right intentions, but a lack of knowledge, and more importantly in this case perhaps, a lack of rescources. The set up you describe is the absolute cheapest set up you can have, and while it can be made to work, sure isn't optimal. Heating pads are especially bad, they are a fire hazard if used for prolonged periods, and don't allow for the fine temperature regulation necessary. Putting scalding water in a cage with a reptile isn't a really good idea either, it sure isn't a substitute for misting.

Perhaps you should rethink keeping reptiles until you're financially able to care for them properly.

Brandon, while I don't agree with your cage set-up it does appear that you're at least attempting to provide proper care. I think your best bet is to leave the thread alone. If you want to talk about the change in laws of Kentucky start it in another forum. I believe there is one on laws. I'm sure members from Kentucky would be interested in discussing it.

If it were me I would stick with colubrids until I was able to control heat and humidity better, possibly with a dedicated room.

A 75 watt bulb in a 10 gallon tank will give you a hot spot, at the bottom of the tank somewhere in the 95 top 100 degree range if I recall correctly. Combine that with a heating pad which we have no clue where it was set, but judging by the mistake made I would imagine it was set on high, AND scalding hot water, I'm sure that snake was overheated, underhydrated and basically KILLED by inexperianced keepers. The thermometer used is also, again if I recall correctly, is a side mount model and will NOT give you a true reading for the HOT spot of the tank. In fact it could easily be 10 degrees of more LESS than the actual hot spot. Scalding water? Water over 200F?

brandon, you and your girlfriend KILLED this snake. Own up to it and move on. Your contnued excuses, lame as they are, only prove the theory that you are NOT, yet hopefully, knowledgable enough to keep anything that has specail environmental needs.

Again, stay off this thread and you'll be doing both of you a favor.

well im not gona leave this thread alone since i happen to be involved in it, figured id light up the mood a bit, but i did what i was told that would work and david said it was fine while he was over here, but guess that cant really count for much apparently. well we have other snakes including 3 red tails , a bolivian amarili silver back and a hypo, which are all fine and doing well, the brb showed no sign of any problems.

Back when I first started I ran into a situation where I needed to create a quick setup for just a day. I had a spare melamine based cage that I was not using and threw a heating pad under it. I placed it on high and waited a few hours to see where it would put the hot spot at. On high, and through 1 inch melamine, the hot spot on the floor was over 130 degree's.

I agree with Wes on this one. When you combine the heating pad, heat lamp, scalding water etc, you ended up with results that anyone here could have predicted. Instead of guessing at what a suitable setup was you should have asked those that were in the know.

You killed the snake, plain and simple. Learn from it, accept your lumps and grow. Passing the blame to someone when it was clearly your fault is NOT going to work.
