    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

cloudy eyes

one of my crestie females has cloudy eyes (looks a little like mineral deposits, or water spots on dishes). I did not notice for the past few days, so I am not sure how long they have been like this.

I have been watching her lick her eyeball, and she seems to lick only part of it, not the cloudy portion. I took some pictures but none of them have been clear enough to post so far.

Any ideas? could these be calcium deposits or stains from hard water?
 
unless she's shedding or has eyecaps of shed I have no idea...see if she sheds in the next few days unless someone else thinks there's a reason for worry...
 
How is she jumping and stuff? Does she seem to see OK? I just ask because I know with dogs and stuff that they're eyes can get cloudy when they are blind (or partially blind). Not sure what causes it but if she seems like she's having problems seeing from that direction I'd think a vet trip would be in order (maybe they'll have some ideas at least). Wouldn't hurt to give one a call first either. Just a thought.
 
A cataract is INSIDE of the eye, if these look like water spots, I'm assuming that it would be on the outside, and wouldn't be cataracts. Cataracts also, as a rule, don't just appear suddenly, they gradually worsen over time. It is possible that she got a scratch or other injury on the eye, that can make them cloudy.....but there could be a lot of reasons. I really think a vet call is in order on this one.
 
I never really asked any of the people why their dog looked like that, I just knew that it meant they were blind in that eye. Learn something new every day. Feel free to ignore me then :)

I am NOT a vet, but from looking the pictures, it looks to me as if she has had an injury of some sort to the eye, I have seen something very similar with a friend who used to raise Pug puppies (they have buggy ol eyes, and they tend to get scratched while playing with littermates with sharp little claws). If treated right away with an ointment or wash from the vet, I would think you would have good luck with clearing it up. Without treatment, it's iffy, and can lead to permanent blindness. Keep in mind though....I'm NOT a vet, and that's just what I see from the pictures. A visit to a vet is a must, I think.

the vet i went to is a quack.

he basically wasted an hour and a half of my time to tell me a bunch of stuff I already knew.

When I made the appointment they said that the treat geckos... when I get there the assistants said mine was the first they have ever seen.

Then the doctor got all he knows about them from me, and tells me that he thinks the problem is a protein buildup in the center layer of the cornea like he sees frequently in dogs.

I asked if he ever saw this in any reptile whatsoever, he said "No."

when I asked if it might be bacteria he said that it could be, but he wants to treat it with an ointment for the protein buildup... I asked him if it was safe for my gecko to ingest, he said absolutely not...

So I asked him "how many dogs that you treat here can lick their own eyeball clean?"

At this point he admits that he knows very little about reptiles at all, and asked for my money... I told him to shove it and point me to someone who knows what they are doing.

Once I pointed out that if my gecko goes blind because he wasted my time when he should have pointed me to a vet that KNOWS herps that I would bring him up on a lawsuit (the specialist he finally referred me to was closed by then), he promptly agreed that the visit would be free of charge...

I want to break something
 
Yeah definitly time for a new vet.

Looking at the pictures, I have no idea what that could be... damn weirdest thing I've seen in a while. Hopefully you find a vet that knows what they are doing.
 
Ok, found a vet that tells me that they see cresteds all the time, but can't see me before tuesday.
 
Aw jeez.....that stinks. I can't believe he'd want to treat something he knows nothing about.....but then, it's like anything else, some vets are only in it for the money. :(

well, I found out that they aren't sure what it is. They wanted $300 to find out. I opted for some antibiotics (oral and topical). If it doesn't clear it up then I'll give an antifungal cream a try...
 
been dosing her with antibiotics and an antibiotic ointment for her eyes... doesn't seem to be doing anything for her.

One of her eyes looks worse... does anyone have any other ideas of what this might be?

its not an injury, doesn't seem to to be bacterial, set on too fast for cateracts...

are there any parasites that could do this?
