Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

I need advice on Coastal carpets everything from breeding to ?? i am kinda new with carpets but not with others.

These r babies right now. One ? i am feeding one of them 2 hoppers ( Belicve this one to be male) The other is downing 3-4 hoppers (I think its a female) I was wondering should i switch them over to mice lower there food in take?
R most carpets extremly cranky around feeding time? I also feed them every 10 days

NOw with that said they also tried to eat each other and i fed them on saturday (Not today last) the male seems fine now and i was wondering is this normal or anything like that?

I am greatly thankful.

Umm That was clue one that you really need to separate these snakes. Before it becomes a successful "meal".

carpets tend to be fast metabolizing foreber hungry lil creatures from what I have seen in my male. I actually feed him every 5 days even just to make sure that he is NOT hungry at all. When they are hungry, they tend to be a bit on the "Don't even think of coming near me" mood. lol

You might want to take a look into feeding them rat instead of mouse for their prey items. The rats have more nutrition to them and that may help out some in their quest for fullfillment. I never offer any of my snakes more than 3 prey items here at all, no matter what. If they are hungry after eating 3 then they really need to have their prey items that they are being fed taken a good look into. It is not "satisfying' their hunger to say the least. When fed a properly sized prey item, the snake should be fine with just 1 or even 2 prey items also. When you feed the snake a large multitude of prey items , you can actually be overworking their "gut" and cause health problems for the snake even. Also the snake digests it's prey basically in such a manner that the last prey item when fed large quantities of prey  items, that some prey may even just rot in their gut before the digestive process gets started on such.
10 days is waaay to long of a feeding interim for these snakes due to their digestive metabolism rate.
Hope that helps some..

one is 18 the other 19 no bigger girth then a nickel. Thats why i can't switch them yet i mean i want to but they can barely tackle live mice. I feed live to ensure that they still have what mother nature gave them.

After they tried to eat each other i did switch not even 2-3  minutes after they where pulled off each other (The Female tried to eat the male)

I think its the way i fed them i would move them to a feed box to be fed and they thought food yum!

When they are hungry, they tend to be a bit on the "Don't even think of coming near me" mood. lol

My female is that way no matter what, i am thinking of renaming her from Bitey to Satin or theres one more.

Thanks

HMM..Enlighten me a bit here please.. By your statement are you refering to the "hunt/strike" thing that mother nature gave them. Or do you think that they "lose" something of value in their prey item when fed f/t or f/k vs live ?
Please take note that unless your "dead" prey is from the freezer and "old".. the nutrient value of the prey item is the same as live prey. About the only thing you may be "promoting" for your snake by live feeding is something like this pic I attached here in this post. The pic is of a carpet python that received bites from a live feed [ chose that pic cuz your are carpets hehe]. I rehabbed the snake and it is now the male that I have in my collection.

CARPET_RESCUE_ID___SP2145_PIC_15.JPG

If that pic isn't enough to show the damage that a rodent is capabl;e of transmitting to your snake . Then take a look at this page here of mine on LIVE FEEDING
Take note that the damage the second snake had done to it is from a mouse, NOT a rat also. [ throwing that in due to the "weeell It's not like I am feeding it rats ya know." answer i tend to get from people a lot when pointing such things out in regards to live feeding].

GREATthat your feeding in a separate tote, BUT you also need to NOT feed both snakes in the same tote also. If you only have 1 tote available, then feed 1 snake and then the other in it is all.

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">My female is that way no matter what,</td></tr></table><span id='postcolor'>

try changing her feeding time span between feeds and see if that helps at all. From what you have said here already. It may be that your snake has a varociuos appetite and needs to be fed more often than 10 days is all possibly. trial and error will let you know.

No way i feed them when i am in the room and when they r off live mice frozen fresh killed rats he we come. But i will start feeding frozen, fresh killed on mice before the switch.

what happened in the pick? Did someone leave a jumbo rat in there and walk away?
HMM..Enlighten me a bit here please.. By your statement are you refering to the "hunt/strike" thing that mother nature gave them.
Hunt strike thing all mine do is clamp on and squeeze the life out of them with there mouths!! But some times they do constrict they have started to do that more and more.
I am going to lower i to 7 insted of 10 or i might do 5 but is that to much 12 full grown mice a month?

OOO..k. Here it is "'spelled" out a bit clearer for you then.
Rats are not the only rodent that can cause harm to a snake when live feeding. MICE can also..As seen in this pic where the prey which caused the seen damage was a mouse NOT a rat....

ball_chew.JPG

As you can see in the pic. A mouse has the potential to vastly harm a snake possibly. Now as for the 'No way, i am in the room when I feed them".. Your point is what in that statement ? Just cuz your present doesn't mean the rodent will not be able to harm the snake at all.

As for..
</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">what happened in the pick? Did someone leave a jumbo rat in there and walk away?</td></tr></table><span id='postcolor'>

The damage was not done by a jumbo rat. This snake would only eat mice.. so....
[Since in my care he has been switched over to f/t rats though]

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">I am going to lower i to 7 insted of 10 or i might do 5 but is that to much 12 full grown mice a month?</td></tr></table><span id='postcolor'>

Why don't you try this ? Change the feeding interim to 7 days to start out with. Then take your clues by the snake's actions as to when it is once again hungry [ the snake will go into a "hunt" mose at that point btw]. Plan on feeding it in 7 days time if it does not go into a "hunt mode" prior to such though. If it does go into that mode before 7 days time...long as it is at least 5 days time passed, then feed it again though. Do NOT feed the snake prior to every 5 days!
ALSO...you already said that the snake has taken a full sized mouse. Therefore, do NOT feed the snakes any more hopper sized mice at all. Just feed them the full sized mice like the one you got it to take today. AND ONLY feed the snake 1 of these at each feeding. If the snake goes into hunt mode prior to 7 days time, then on the next feeding give it 2 of this sized prey is all.
Short version =
You fed 1 full sized mouse today.
Plan on feeding 1 full sized mouse next Saturday for next feeding.
**IF The snake starts "hunt mode" before next Saturday, then offer feed priopr to then, BUT NOT before Thursday. [If this happens then offer the snake 2 full sized mice at this feeding instead of 1 also. ]**
just proceed with the snakes feeding schedule like this until you have figured out what is a good schedule for your snake is all.

NOTE : When you increase the size of a snake's prey item..ie hopper mouse to a full grown mouse, like you have..You really need to cut back on the # of prey items offered to the snake in it's feed for each meal.
Does this make sense to you at all now ?

OH and also offer the snake f/k mice at first and then you should be able to switch it over to f/t easily from there also. Do this BEFORE you can no longer say that you never have a problem feeding live to your snake also. { I get about 5 emails per week on the average from people asking me how to treat rodent bite their snake received while live feeding. Many of them have been doing such for years without any problems..till now

Mine nail it right away if hungry if its been more then a minute i try the next day,

Why would u just put a mouse in a cage and leave, i stay and watch because that happend to my ball (it bit him once and i broke its neck got some tongs and he ate), They also stay in hunt mode for 2-4 hours after (They r still hungry) so i feed them with about a 3 hr diff between mice so it give it time to start digest and if they r not in attack mode they just go in their hide boxs or they water dish. I also pin down the "Preys" tail (One at a time) then they start to squeal and all of a sudden wham eekkkkkkkkkkkkkkk!

That was one mouse that did all that? how long did that go on for?

Which pic ya refering to ?
The first one is doing GREAT at this point now . The carpet python that is .. This is a recent pic of him ..

CARPET_6_16_02_PIC_12.jpg

The second pic I posted was a ball python.. That one was still alive , even though half ot's head was exposed from the bites it received. It was brought into a pet / reptile shop and the owner was asking for help with it. The shop took it to the vet and had it euthanized as it was so bad it had lil chance of surviving. [I didn't take that specific one in personally but have permission to use the pics of it]

we have a friend who has a beautiful albino burm named lucky. he was feeding her live prey when she was young and she lost her tongue. the mouse bit it off. we feed everything we own pre-killed. we invest too much in our animals to risk anything like that happening.

and cartman, say you throw a live mouse in the cage and the snake's in the process of having his feed and mouse bites, scratches, or gouges it, you're planning to do what? stick your hand in there with them and take it away...

HEy cnj !?

Would lucky be like an older snake now, whos about 10'+ in length, weighs maube like 80lbs etc ? AND She's residing at a reptile rescue atm in Alberta VA, has been for awhile but is going back to her owner in October this year ? hehe If so I know that snake, have met her personally and she is a GORGEOUS snake with a nice 'tude even.

On your other question in regards to the placing the hand in the cage...I doubt it ! Especially once the snake is more grown even.

I have been feeding live to other snakes without a problem (Other then my ball) i thin i will switch it freh killed thanks for all the information if u know more about anything involving carpets please let me know thanks

Lori,
Yes that's the one.  The owner is a friend of mine actually, she is still at MRS and she has 3 more shows and she goes back.  She is about 15' now and over 100lbs.  The original owner, my friend, is the one that fed her the live prey when she had her tongue bitten off.  You know it's kind of sad to see that little nub come sticking out of her mouth.  He knows much better now, I do believe if I remember correctly he had a really hard time getting her on pre-killed.  It's been so many years ago hard for me to remember.

YUP.. That be her  <img src="http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>  I don't know her exact weight and length .. Have played with her but never picked her up at all while there. Yeah I heard that was a problem with her feeds for awhile there too. Also anytime a snake gets bit by a rodent , esp in feeding attempts, it most likely will also go off feds for awhile and is a MAJOR PITA to get back onto feeding too.
I have never met the owner of LUCKY but have met her though many times.
