In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

im going to college in a year, and ive been wondering what that will do to my gecko hobby. do most colleges allow u to keep lizards in skool? what have u guys done? thanks

You should contact the Residental Life office at the school you will be attending. I went to two schools where I lived in a dorm, SUNY Brockport and R.I.T. They both allowed fish but no other pets. However, as smaller terrestrial geckos live in an enclosed container (and are unlikely to get out ), don't have any real odor , and are mostly silent most RA's will overlook them. If the school allows them great! If they don't officially then I would recommend moving there first, making sure your room/suite mates are cool with them, and quietly smuggle them in. You most likely will have a closet that they can be housed in ;)

I take mine between home and school (a 12-13 hour drive...). I didn't have them when I lived in a dorm though. If you will be in a dorm, make sure to find out the rules...if they say nothing but fish, actually talk to them about the rules, as they may not actually follow exactly what is written. Some might allow small caged animals. If you happen to be going into an apartment...be careful to make sure you check out the rules there too (and talk to the landlord). This past year I had my geckos in my apartment and wasn't supposed to...one of my roommates was a b!^@# and told on me (not the only thing that made her one......) and I had to stash most of them up on campus with a TA....until I smuggled them back in anyway...lol Basically just watch the rules and be careful...if you smuggle them in where you're not supposed to have them...be prepared to get caught! I think generally you'll be told to get them out before any actual action is taken...so have a backup!

Padraic and Christina pretty much covered it. In my personal experience, most RAs don't care about small reptiles. They worrry about odor from small mammalian pets more than anything else. I got really lucky as an undergrad and actually sold leopard geckos to my dorm-mates. o_O;;

You can take a chance and bring them, but definitely talk to people first and see if you can get away with it. Be prepared to stash them at someone else's place just in case you can't keep them or get caught!

we're allowed to have them at school (no fur bearing animals but people still get away with cats), and i live close enough where i might leave mine at school during fall and spring breaks and just drive over to feed and take care of them. we don't have RA's, but the rule is that as long as everyone on the floor is ok with them, then it's fine. and no one is really going to object. but i agree that you should definitely contact the school you're going to or school's you're looking at and see what their policies are about animals.

Vanessa, I bought a male leo form a college student in 2003, but cannot for the life of me remember who it was. I do remember it was an ad on kingsnake, did you sell any there?

Nope, it wasn't me, Wendy. I only sold babies within my dorm that year since I only produced 9 and kept 4 for myself.

I am going to Washington State University in August... You wouldnt be able to keep many if any in the dorm. I am living off campus and we are allowed to keep pets. If you are over 20 or transfer with an AA you can live off campus at my school.

Luckily my college is a half an hour drive so the collection will stay home :) If i brought the collection with me, i'd not have room to sleep!

When I lived in a dorm, many years ago (yes, I wore armor and rode a horse back then :p) the RA's could care less. Buy them a case of beer and everything was cool. Did I mention that the drinking age was 18 in the 70's and early 80's so we could do that legally? LOL.

Anyway, I kept whatever I wanted as I had a cool roommate. I even had a cat in the dorm and no one even blinked.

As for now, your best bet is to check with your eventual roommate(s) and with school policy. My guess is that if no one complains and there is no odor you will be fine with a *small* collection of reptiles. The issue could be feeding them. Crickets can smell and they do get loose. Many people will see them as pests, or worse, think that they are roaches. If you go with only mealworms you might have a better time of it.

Good luck.

Oh, to be back in college in the 70's and 80's. I started college at South Dakota State University (Where men are men, and so are the women) - and they were very lenient. I remember one dorm party (Yes, you could have keggers IN the dorm rooms in that era), one of the rodeo team members brought his HORSE up to the 4th floor. No one even minded. (Like I said, it was an interesting university, to say the least).

No kidding!

Now that I'm older, calmer and working with college students, I do know many of them who have small caged animals in their dorms. It certainly depends on the policy of the school and/or tolerance of room mates and RA's.

I remember my brother riding his motorcycle into a dorm ion 1976, though he was arrested for DUI. LMAO.

What am I more surprised about ... the horse on the fourth floor.... or the rodeo teams existence ;)

Even as a hay seed farm kid from MN, I was surprised by many things at SDSU - but mostly of a very attractive blonde bombshell, who jumped out of her Ford 4-wheel drive F-250 pickup, and casually spit some tobacco juice.

I swear I could hear banjo's playing the theme to "Deliverance" in the background.

LOL...monty both those posts are freakin hilarious! I believe the rodeo teams existence...we have have one now at U of I...what I don't believe is that the guy was able to get a horse up to the 4th floor without the horse going absolutely berserk!....I gotta wonder how many times he had that horse indoors and on stairs to get it used to something like that!...lol As far as your second post...I believe that too!...going to U of I there are plenty of farm raised "kids".... I amuse myself in that I'm suburb raised...and drive around in a 4-wheel drive F-150 with one had on the weel, the window wide open, and country music blaring on the radio! :) I was in NYC this past weekend....just wishing I had my truck so I could freak the h&!! out of people by blaring country music...LOL...not that I would ever actually drive in NYC....but the thought was extremely amusing! I don't have any good dorm critter stories though...
