In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

After all the bickering I have seen lately on the BOI I thought I would start a thread to help folks CYA... (cover your :censored:).

For several years I ran a reptile breeding business and I was always buying and shipping animals. It was just the nature of the beast when your breeding and adding to your breeding stock. After a while you learn to CYA or it's going to get taken out by someone that has no ethics or morals and will try to get something for nothing.

Some of the tips I will share here I have not shared before. The reason for this is because I felt it gave me an ace in the hole when dealing with customers and suppliers. I didn't want to tip my hand. ONE of the tips I will share would catch a seller in a bold face lie very quickly should they decide to tell it.... therefore I definitely didn't want to tip my hand in case they decided to pull that crap on me in a BOI thread. Now that I am no longer in business... it doesn't bother me to share what I have learned and used to protect my butt over the years.

Below is just a few of the tips that I have learned over the years, but they have served me well. Others can add their tips too if they like.

TIP 1.... if your selling a snake of any value, take multiple photos before you send it out. Take a photo from every side... including the belly. If there are any distingusable markings in the pattern be sure to get these including the surrounding area. This way if someone claims the snake you sent died in transit and they sent you a photo of a snake on its back you can stand a chance at IDing that snake as yours. There are some very unethical folks out there that will keep one DOA in the freezer and try to use it to scam others out of their snakes. Be sure the snake you're refunding the money on is ACTUALLY your snake. The easiest way is by keeping good photographic records before you ship them out.

Now I realize this may not be doable for those of us that produced (or produces) quanity... and you may not want to do it for say a $20 normal cornsnake.... but if you have money tied up in the transaction... why not CYA!

TIP 2.... This is probably the most important tip I can impart and was my ace in the hole. At one point in time I kept seeing requests for proof on the BOI. I got to thinking... what is the one piece of proof that you cant deny? Then it dawned on me and I changed the way I did things. I actually had to use this twice while I was in business and it served me well. So what is the proof that you cant really shoot down? I started video taping every box I opened from start to finish. It started recording the box on the table (still sealed up) and I read off the shipper information and showed it to the camera.... I also said on camera while I was opening the box what was supposed to be inside the box. I then opened up the box with the camera rolling and shooting down into the box (had camera on tripod). This way there was undenialable (Sp?) proof of the packing conditions and the condition of the animals upon taking them out of the box. I had two instances where the animals didn't make the trip and it showed clearly on the tape. They were laying in my hands upside down and they weren't moving. When I contacted the seller and sent them a private link to that video they knew for sure I was not trying to pull a fast one on them to get a free animal. They could see without a doubt the animal was in fact dead and that it was their animal. I had one seller tell me that my reputation was good enough that they didn't need to see the video but I insisted and had them contact me after they watched it.

I also rolled tape when I packed up the packages. Once the transaction went smooth I deleted the files. The key is to CYA!

TIP 3.... Archive your emails. The way I achieved this (and I dont know if it was specific to my email client software) is I would hilight all emails from someone then right click. I had the option to attach the emails to a new email. I would then send myself the new email and put the order number or some other identifing info in the subject line. By doing this it attaced all the emails into one email and I could delete the multiples and just have one sitting there containing everything. This saves space in your emails and keeps everything organized and in one place. I did this for sent and received emails.

TIP 4.... Private links are easy to accomplish if your shooting video you dont want to make public just yet. Just log into your photobucket account and make a new folder. Once you have done this you will see a little "padlock" icon out beside it. Click on this icon and it will allow you to set that folder as private. Upload your video to that folder and send your shipper the coding for the direct link to the video. This will allow them to view the video and noone else because it's in a private folder. BE SURE you tell your shipper it is in a private folder that no one else has access to because if your doing it right you named them in the video. You dont want them to think your burning them to the whole world. Give them a chance to make it right before burning them.

These are just a few of the tips that I used on a daily basis to CMA when it came to dealing with shippers and buyers. In this day and age it is a good habbit to get into.

Be safe in your transactions and always CYA... you never know when you may need it.

Great tips.....

Videotapping is the way to go..... Now if I could ever remember to do it....

great stuff. after reading some of the BOI shipping horror stories, i started taping my packaging as well before shipping. when recieving though i have just been taking a series of stills. might switch to video after this though. i also keep all of my emails regarding transactions in individual folders. once the transaction is complete, i copy the entire email/pm data and save it to a text file in my business folder. luckily i have never recieved any DOAs or had any issues with my animals that have been shipped. but just in case, i always cover my own...

TIP 5.... Forget all the he said, she said BS when making deals over the phone. If you know your going to talk about business on the phone have your video recorder handy. Set it up so its looking at a static object (wall, table top) and start recording. Put your phone on speaker and you now have documented proof of what was said on the phone. I have used this before and it works like a charm. This also works well for archiving voicemails if you think you may need them later for a BOI thread.

careful with your state's laws on audio recordings there. If you record them without their knowledge in some states it's a felony.

Maybe so.... but so is fraud and theft. And if my recording catches you with your red hand in the cookie jar.... I'll take whatever comes my way from catching you.

Tips:

Weigh not only the snake but the box and shipping materials. Save this info and the weight the shipping company logs. This will help against "escapees" or the "empty box" trick.

If you don't have a recording device, get a friend to come over, preferably and established fauna member.

RESEARCH every buyer! It seems like most of the time people only research sellers when they are buying. Even as a seller, you are also the buyer and receiver of goods (money). Research them in the BOI, google, local court systems, etc.

Treat every situation like you are gonna end up in a bad guy thread. Be polite no matter how ignorant a buyer is (man can they get ignorant) and explain why you chose not to do business with them.

Don't SAY you have a Do Not Buy From Or Sell To List (DNBFOSTL), but actually have one. Log the persons name, city/state, and the reason why. I started keeping a mental list and that didn't last long.

Along the lines of what Kevin said, try to capture the health of the reptile before you ship it too. Show the tongue flicking, show the snake isn't lethargic, no belly rot, no mouth gap, rot or breathing problems. If you have a newer cell where the time/date is updated by the provider, show that in the same video. I don't think my iPhone will let me change the time/date.

Let heat packs warm 30 minutes before using. Probe and take temp with photo.

When buying, don't be afraid to ask for an object to be placed in the picture of the reptile. Make up a random item, football, blue shoe, a picture, etc. Don't finish the transaction without as much info as you can gather on the seller. A good, truthful seller will give you this info without you having to ask.

Red flags!! Trust your instict and take red flags seriously. Your money was hard to make, don't be so easy to give it away.

* Seller is being short in emails and only offering you answers to what you ask. If he/she doesn't have time for you now, they won't when the crap hits the fan.

* Seller is newly registered but has a $1000+ snake for sale. No info can be found on the person. Maybe it's just me, but I don't know many people that dump that kinda money into reptiles without knowing what the internet is.

* Any sale in Cameroon.

* Getting out of snake sales. I got screwed on one of these. If they are leaving and not coming back... they just might not care about trashing their name.

Yeah thanks Kevin! Very helpful advice. It seems like some people sell their collection and split :bolt01:
It's nice of you to pass some info on!

Thank you. If i start selling its good advice. To add to the phone conversation recording. Just say that the phone conversation is being recorded for
"Quality Insurance" then all is good in any state, and can be used in a court of law.

Be careful with using "for quality assurance" as that doesn't always hold up in California. A simple, "This call is being recorded" will suffice. The bonus is, it gives them the option to hang-up, potentially saving you a headache.

For me... reptiles was more than a hobby... it was an addiction. I haven't gotten over the addiction yet.... so Im still around :D

Im working on getting over it... it's just gonna take time. Must be some addictive substance that they put in snake crap

you will kick it, but it will all ways be there watching, waiting for you to be weak. i have the same problem. "for quality assurance" ahhahah true i was trying to sound professional. guess not.

Kevin, this is a great thread.

I like what Nick said:

I can think of at least one recent BOI thread where someone probably would have gone through less trouble had he just stuck to the advice you offer here about staying friendly.

I will keep following this thread to see more practical tips people are willing to offer.

And Kevin, I like the title you picked for the thread. It grabbed my attention immediately. It screams PRACTICAL INFO…and that’s what a lot of people want/need.

Thanks for this thread. I had video rolling when I discovered a DOA earlier this week (only the 2nd time I've had a snake shipped to me). The seller was reputable so I didn't expect that I'd need it, but I sure felt a whole let better about my position when I contacted him.
