    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Cypress mulch versus Aspen opinions?

I was just curious how many of you use cypress mulch for you BPs. I am currently using aspen but have been thinking on using the cypress because its cheaper and I use it with my green tree python. The only hangup I have had with changing is that the cypress seems like it is very rough and sharp compared to the aspen I use. If any of you use cypress mulch have you had any issues with it injuring your snakes? All input will be appreciated.

That's why you change aspen if they dump water. :thumbsup: or use ceramic dog/cat water bowls

Its easier to see messes, easier to clean up. imo anyway...
 
Yea, it really sucks when they like to dump it every day!!!!! The ceramic bowls that are small enough for the 16 quart tubs still get dumped by the juvies, I would go with larger bowls but then I wouldn't have room for their hides. I like aspen too, just thought about trying the cypress.
 
Hmm I never have a problem with water being dumped with the ones that have ceramic (which are the ones that love to dump their water)

I use a decent size bowl too. Even in my 16qt tubs. I'd have to say the circumference is about the same as a small basketball, you know like the ones you win at fairs or w/e, lol.
 
I have made my own before but I like how easy these hides are to clean and they aren't too expensive either not to mention a perfect size for juvies. I might try to velcro down some of the bowls for the few that love to tip them over:D
 
This is why I love the ARS tubs. No spilled water with the built in holder. :rofl:
I always used cyprus but have recently switched all the tubs to aspen (except for one female that I won't bother till she lays). The aspen is less messy. Too much dust and it was always damp whenever I got cyprus.
The aspen has hardly any dust compared to cyprus and it is dry when I get it.
 
I use both. I like the look of the aspen but prefer the non-molding and humidity-friendliness of the cypress. I keep all of my corns on aspen bedding and if I'm ever out of cypress I use aspen in its place. I've tried sani-chips in the past, too, when it was shipped to me by mistake instead of shredded aspen. It looked nice enough but we quickly learned that it was like using confetti. :p
 
I've pretty much only used aspen, though I did switch to aspen shavings instead of sani-chips about a year ago. The shavings would mold within a week or so of having water dumped on them (some of my snakes have water-bowl-dumping contests or something). Sani-chips, though, take a really long time to mold, even when wet.

If cypress is so humidity-tolerant, though, I may need to try that for a little while and see how it goes.

Where can you get a large bulk of cypress?
 
I used cypress before in the past and never had any health issues, and it holds humidity great, but cleaning was a pain and I didnt stick with it long. I thought about switching back to it but decided to give aspen a try a few weeks ago. I think from now on Ill use aspen. Easier to clean, pretty cheap ( I just buy the big bags at Petco) and quite absorbant.
