Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Im planning on getting a desert hairy scorpion very soon and wanted to get a heat pad that goes under the tank for it. I have read that this can actually cook the scorpion when it digs to escape heat, will these pads work just as well on the side of the tank? Should i place a hide next to the side with heat? Also what size should i get for a 12x12x12 glass tank? thanks for any help.

Well a foot square is a small tank to heat but I would find the smallest pad available and put it in the corner side of the tank. I would think the pad would heat up the whole bottom and the scorp would not be be able to excape the heat. Just be careful as that is a small tank and will hold heat and humidity.
How warm is the room the tank will be in, just wondering ...I use no heat for my inverts and they all do very well [got hundreds]. The room they stay in is at the high point 79 and the low point 71 degrees.
Not saying using no heat is the way to go

With any type of udner tank heat, a thermostat is needed.

But since the scorpion you refer too digs to escape the heat, I would not use UTH even with a thermostat. If they are digging to escape heat I would suggest a clamp lamp with a bulb to heat the top so they can dig down to get away from it. Diggin would lead them directly to the heat with UTH.

Desert Horned Lizards dig down too, I always used above tank heat for them.

Well John I'm not sure what the high point would be but the nights sometimes can get pretty cold so i wouldn't feel to good about not having a heat source in my house for the scorp. I do plan on getting both a therm and hygrometer so i can monitor the readings, but Ive herd its not good for the scorpions to keep a lamp on over head, should i use one of those blue or red lights? Do they reach the same temp and would it be safe to leave on for an almost permanant heat source? Thanks for the input guys.

It does get rather cold in the desert also and rathern hot in the day...with your worries I would use a small red bulb [no more than 40 watts] left on for 12 hours a day give or take. An incandescent bulb can get hot so be careful.
Your desert hairy will do well with dry substrate and a humid burrow.

Thanks John, ill go with the red bulb and set the cage up without the scorpion for a couple days and check out the temp and humidity before getting him and putting him in.

Also you said something about the cage size, do you think a 12x12x12 is sufficient for a desert hairy?

We have kept our Desert Hairy's in a 10 gallon seperately. I heat a bunch of terrariums at once so I use Heat Cable. If you choose to heat the terrarium from above, try to use a product that does not put off alot of light. We have learned that it stresses alot of the inverts out.
