In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Figured since we have some tech smart members here, maybe someone could point me in the right direction. I'm looking for cloning software, so I can move everything on my laptop to a larger drive.

Thing is, I have a few large programs on there, that I cannot activate a second time, so I need one that will clone it entirely down to the last bit of info, so that I don't lose the functionality of the programs, or Windows 7 Ultimate.

Thanks for any info.

Before you transfer to another drive you'll want to defragment and compress what's on your existing drive. There is a built-in Window's utility that works quite well. My brother just transferred all his data, OS included, to a solid state drive yesterday. I'll talk to him and see what he recommends.

I've used Acronis True Image in the past to clone drives with excellent results....

I like that disc image thing, and used it to image my hard drive to an external as a back up. Looks to even be bootable looking at the files it moved. But haven't tried it yet. Should make for an easy copy when the drive arrives for the laptop.

Another question...one thing I noticed as I installed programs to my laptop, is that the install path is slightly different with 7 then XP Pro, depending on if it's a 64 bit compatible program, or 32 bit, or something.

So if I used easy transfer to move an installed program from my XP machine, to my 7 machine, do you think it will work properly?

Easy transfer won't move programs, only application data. Unfortunately due to the complex nature of many programs and the copy protection that shackles them to your machine, it is very difficult to move programs between computers.

64 bit programs are installed in the Program Files directory, while 32-bit programs are installed into the Program Files (x86) directory. This change is handled by windows 7 transparently.

If you manually install the program, and then use easy transfer to copy the settings to your new machine, it should be configured as before. Sadly, it isn't always reliable and depends on the program.

Regarding the image on the external drive, depending on how you told Clonezilla to back up your previous drive, it either copied it exactly, or stored a backup of the drive as a single restore file. If it copied it exactly (you see the windows directory on the drive, etc.) it will be bootable.

So after looking a little closer, it appears that the built in windows feature "disc image" is not bootable like I thought. Looked a little closer, and it is done in the typical "back up" fashion of windows. Meaning, it would require windows to re-establish it.

Good thing I had that external drive to practice with before actually attempting anything permanent. I think I'm going to look at those external programs a little closer now.

Thanks for the replies.
