Seldom seen softshell species that requires clean, well oxygenated water and plenty of hiding places (sand, driftwood, etc). Adults max out around 12-13” but larger specimens have been seen, especially long term captives.
Despite being a Softshell they’re not easy to sex as they all appear to be females at one point or another only to display their linger thicker tail after a while in captivity. So we can’t guarantee sexes in these guys since males are normally harder to get to begin with. These guys are all hand collected by our collectors in Indo which explains the high number of females versus males when we do get this species in. This causes the issue of sex disparity but it eliminates the issue of hooks in the GI system which plagues a lot of softshell species in the trade.
They feed well on crustaceans and fish. We offer them “seafood medley” from our local supermarket which consists of octopus, shrimp, squid and clam and they eat it very well. Some eventually learn to eat crab pellets we buy from a supplier of German fish foods (made with freshwater crab).
