I have been doing business with Duane Selman for quite some time now but haven't had a chance to post anything until now...I have sold animals to him, traded animals with him, and I think I might have even bought some things from him...He has a very nice setup, seems knowledgable about his animals and he is very nice to do business with...I will probably end up doing business with him again sometime in the future...:D ...

Are you sure you got his business name correct? HerpWHORE? LOL, well as long as he's trustworthy I guess that's all that counts.

Yes the name is right...I , too, was not a big fan of the name at all but his animals are well taken care of and he is trustworthy...

It's harmless

At my last job my nickname was SnakeWhore because my co-workers thought for sure I would whore myself out for new snakes :)

wow odd name..... im glad you would have trusted it. i would have looked the other way.

So "Bringer of Doom" is ok, but "herp whore" isn't ?!?!?!?

Yes humpbacks1962, you are correct i am a gamer :). trust me when i start using my name to sell stuff its going to be something other than bringerofdoom. i wouldnt think no one would buy something from "bringer of dooms reptiles", if they did i would think oddly of them.

i also thought the same thing of herpwhore too. sounds like a new name for a prositute or something. no offense or anything to you herpwhore is you read this.

I have to agree. I was hesitant on purchasing a leopard gecko from Duane for a number of reasons. First was the consistent misspellings in his ads. "Cheep" instead of "cheap," etc. Second was the unbelievably good deals he was offering. Third was that I remember he posted on Kingsnake asking how to pack and ship live reptiles at the same time he was posting sale ads in the classifieds. But I decided to call anyway and see if this guy was legit. The voice message I got was something like:

him: "Hello?"
me: "Hi, is this Duane?"
him: "Yeah."
me: *ramble about geckos*
him: "Haha! Gotcha! Leave a message."

In any other case, I would have thought it was funny, but as a buyer the unprofessional nature of it just turned me away. Then shortly after, he started using the name Herpwhore which gave the final shove.

I'm not saying this reflects anything about the quality of his service. I would probably give him a chance if I were to see his animals in person at a show, but when it comes to online purchases, these things count against him when I'm trying to envision who I'm buying from.

Wow i see the name is very popular!

I am open to all kinds of critisizem, good and bad but it's like i'm made out to be a bad guy just because of a stupid name. I don't feel that it's right to judge someone on a name or the way they spell or even if you feel their voice mail is unproffessinal, i have never done anyone wrong and have always been 100% honest with everyone i have done business with!

mabye because it's about me that i feel like the bad guy here. but as you know alot of people read this BOI and i would hate for people to get the wrong idea about me because of things like this!

if you search this fourm you will not find anything bad about me except what people think that i have never even talked to before.

but as i said i am open to consturtive critisizem so i will give your oppions some thought.

just please don't make me look bad when i did nothing wrong!

thanks for your time,

thanks for your time,

i didnt think anyone said anything bad about you at all. your name was peculiar and we all agreed to it, but the original post was a good guy report. so atleast he was making shure to let everyone know you were a trustworthy person. like i said i was sorry for the comment i made.

i would also like to know if you have a website anyone can goto. i would be interested in looking at your leopard geckos. im always looking to aquire good leo's :)

i also disagree with Xelda, with using grammar as a way to disqualify someone's credibility.

the last time i checked no one has to have any degree or even graduate high school to sell and breed reptiles. everyone has typing and spelling flaws, its what makes us unique.

heck dave thomas who founded wendy's was a high school dropout. imagine if people tried to doubt him and didnt trust him when he began. so i dont hold nothing about grammar and education against anyone.

i would also like to note that i have had similar voicemails before. i think it just shows there is a humurous side to him, thats all.

i laugh just thinking about what your call was like xelda. lol
i know he probably chuckled some too....

Unfortunately, that's not how it works in the real world. Typing and spelling flaws don't make peope unique; it makes them look incompetent.

Presentation matters. A single misspelling or typo on a resume is enough to get your resume thrown in the trash no matter how much you qualify for the job. It's very competitive out there. When you're dealing with employers and buyers who have hundreds of choices to sift through, surface flaws are what they're going to look at. It's all about setting an excellent first impression. It would be nice if people weren't so superficial that way, but if you can't write or spell properly, people are going to think you're stupid. Plain and simple.

Now, there are exceptions. Even I've been hired for a new job while I stood with food stains on my uniform and greasy hair--merely because the new employer liked my smile when I served her table in a restaurant. However, in Duane's case, he is competing with people who have established reputations, years of experience, and better pictures of the animals they're selling. I'm sure he's losing more business than he realizes. I remember Duane posting on the Kingsnake forums about having a hard time selling on the classifieds. Well, now you know why.

I'll reiterate that I'm not slamming Duane's service or trustworthiness. I even said that I would consider buying from him in person. But since all I have to go by are unrevised ads, unprofessional voicemail, and a sketchy business name, I'll say no thank you to doing online transactions with him.

xelda

I love what i do, I do it well, and take pride in my work, I'm definetly not a spelling bee wiz, my camera is not the greatest, and as I'm seeing now the name is not so swift.

I do have nice animals at good prices and take care of the people that have bought from me.

So xelda, if there's anything that i can do to change your mind let me know. i would be willing to let you pick out a gecko ship it to you. You would not have to pay unless you are happy with it after you recieve it.
