My fiance is saying she wants to bomb all the areas in the house that have carpet for fleas. This includes my snake room. Can anyone tell me the best think to do in regards to moving things out of there? I know I am moving all my snakes to the other side of the house, but do you think I need to move the racks? Also, how long do you think is safe to wait before I put them back in the room? The thing says let the bomb sit for 4 hours then let it air out for 4 more. Do you think that will be enough? Any input will be helpful.

Move them OUT of the house. I've seen pets die from doing parts of the house when I was younger. Also, fleas don't live in the carpet anymore than they would on tile or hardwood. If they are in one room, they are in all.

Also, if you are going to bomb parts of the house, be sure to turn your HVAC unit off and close/plug all the vents in the house. Tape door seams and even animals underwater can be poisoned. Hope this helps.

thank you! I will move them out of the house completely. Do i need to move all the racks too? Also, do you know of any good alternatives"?

I would not risk anything! I would move all animals and enclosures from the house. If I was in your situation, I would just be diligent about vacuuming and treating your pets that the fleas use as hosts, such as dogs and cats. Rats cant get cat and dog fleas, and, I guess the fleas that like dogs are different then the fleas that like cats..? Just something I read on a rat forum. Anyways, Ive been able to rid my house of fleas in the past just by vacuuming really well everyday, that includes the furniture. I would strongly suggest doing that rather then bombing. I think in the past we bombed when we only had a couple snakes and had them in aquariums. We saran wrapped the whole aquarium several times and taped it. The snakes and fish seemed alright afterwards, but, looking back, Im not sure I would suggest taking such risks.

Thank you for your input. I talked her into a bombing alternative. We are gonna have someone come out and spray. That way We can move everything out of the house for just a few hours and not have to worry about any issues. Do you think that can work?

I think spraying would help. Personally, I would only bomb if there was a severe outbreak, like if you come home and within 5 minutes there's 10-15 fleas on your legs. If they are just occasionally jumping on you off the pets then I would get the house sprayed, dip the cats/dogs in a flea bath/shampoo, and then dry and treat them with advantage/advantix/or other equal alternative (not walmart flea treatment).

I would still move the snakes during the spraying and bring them back in an hour or two after it ventilates.

Bleach and mop all the floors real good before all this though, that way there's no place for the fleas to harbor and the spray wont stick to stuff that can be cleaned away.

Oh yeah, and Ortho (I think) makes a pesticide that hooks up to your garden hose so you can spray your yard. I highly recommend this because I have seen yards infested with fleas so bad even all the mentioned above won't help. For some reason they can thrive in high grassy fields. We use to stay at this beach house and never saw any pets, but as soon as you step outside you would have hundreds of fleas all over your legs :ack2:

This stuff here works really well for the yard.Should be able to find it at Lowes or Home Depot. The granules seem to work alot better it is released with water,so everytime it rains it's like spraying the yard and it lasts for months. http://www.bayeradvanced.com/insects-pests/products/powerforce-r-multi-insect-killer-granules
You can also use Borax on the carpet. Sprinkle it on and let sit for several hours and vaccum up.It attaches to the fleas and eggs and dehydrates them. Also treat your dogs and cats.I had an outbreak a couple of years ago and this is what I did and by the next day never saw another flea.

Thank you all for the advice! I had the house sprayed today. Snakes are all at a friends house until tomorrow. They sprayed with ultracide.

I could be wrong but I was once told salt on the carpet would kill them and the eggs, and it is also safe and cheep.
