In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Experiences with VPI

So, now it's perfectly acceptable to post on the BOI because a company doesn't return your emails in a prompt manner? What a joke.

Tracy Barker hasn't cheated anyone, or stolen their money, or received payment for an animal then wait 4 months to ship. She just has not returned a couple of emails.

Kelli,

In MHO no one even questioned VPI, the Barker's or his business. They are without a doubt among the best in this industry and not just because they have and sell beautiful animals. What they do for enhancing the knowlege in the field of herpetology as a whole is remarkable, and more than likely second to none. The poster simply asked if someone have had a similar experience with his inquiries. In my eyes this is even a positive thread about VPI, that suggests potential viewers that if they want to buy from one of the best, they have to be patient. Some businesses are faster than others to reply, and that's a fact of life. The only concern (for any business) would be when there's no reply at all. Then again there might be instances (like apparently in this case) when there are very valid reasons for an individual to delay it's reply. It doesn't seem to me that this post defeated the purpose of the BOI, it was simply an inquiry. Lucky for us not every thread is about scammers and the like! It would be very difficult to endure. :)

Best regards

Just went back and re-read the initial post by Jim. While he framed the main purpose for his post around some niceties, its a complaint to me. Provided a whole lot of detail for someone just wondering if communications out of the Barkers were running behind. If others don't see it that way, to each his own. Kelli and I seem to have like minds on this one.

I agree 100%.

I have done business with Tracy a few times and could not have asked for better animals or better communication. She is there before, during and after the sale, which is pretty rare in this business these days. Tracy also stays in touch to see how things are going which impresses the hell outta me. Shes a sweet person and her knowledge is second to none!
I plan on giving Tracy my business when ever possible.

I think it's more of a negative thread being disguised as a positive thread. I also think it was uncalled for for him to post issues of a personal issue regarding Tracy in this thread. If I were her I would write him a check for $500 and never do business with him again.

Kelli,

It seems as though we are interpreting the initial post differently. That’s quite alright, and you may very well be right but here is what I read in that entire post:

Thought it might be helpful to other herp enthusiasts to hear about my recent interactions with Tracy Barker at VPI. As anyone who is into herps will know, Tracy and Dave Barker have an incredible collection of snakes, mostly Pythons and Boas. I think it’s accurate to say that Tracy handles most of the retail activity, and occasionally she will place an ad on kingsnake.com.

Praises to VPI animals.

I imagine the volume of phone calls and e-mails to VPI is considerable, and I don’t expect immediate responses from Tracy when I inquire about the availability of an animal. On a couple of occasions I e-mailed Tracy with a photo request, and received an immediate response saying that she would take pics and be back in touch. On the first two of these occasions, I never heard from her again….no photos, no communication. Not really a big deal---I simply purchased from other sources and left it alone.

Complete understanding of the issue, non-unrealistic expectations, non-judgmental, took his business elsewhere.

This Spring I did purchase a Blood Python from Tracy, and it was a good interaction, with prompt responses, great service, and a very nice animal. I was, and am, very pleased with the snake.

More praises to VPI service and animals.

In early August Tracy advertised some Blood Pythons and I e-mailed her in response, asking for photos and sharing my interest in a purchase…No response for several days, so I called and left a message, sharing two phone numbers and asking her to call me. I didn’t get a response, so after a few days I e-mailed again. I finally got a response from Tracy, who asked the appropriate questions about what I was looking for and said she’d take photos.

States facts in a civil way. and in spite of the delay, again non-judgmental

After that interaction in August, I was regularly in touch with Tracy via e-mail and these are some of her statements: “Got it, and you will get pics tonight!”…and “pic time is here-I have my animals marked for you!”… After more than 6 weeks, I was still waiting to see a photo. At the beginning of October, I finally sent an e-mail to Tracy:

More facts about his interaction with Tracy. More than 6 weeks go by and sends the following e-mail:

Tracy-
No big deal right now, but at some point in the future I'd like to
consider buying a het from you.... I've been working at this since
early August, and haven't seen a photo yet.
I get the idea that I'll never hear from you again unless I do all the
work to make something happen. Are you having regrets about giving me
the $500 credit?

In a very polite manner states that he still would like to buy a snake, and asks a valid question.

Tracy responded:
Jim,
I am so sorry. Honestly I have had my own health issues, my dad just dropped dead of a stroke last week, and Dave has been working like mad trying to finish this ball python book. I absolutely have every intention of honoring your credit.
I will try and get Dave to fix the photos I took for you asap. I'm off to Baltimore to be with my mom til Saturday. I am planning to do shipping the week after. Please accept my apologies for this delay.
Tracy

Tracy responds with a very valid reason for the delay, states she will honor the credit, and says she has already taken the pictures (…“fix the photos I took for you asap”…)

Yes, I felt like a jerk. I sent her this e-mail:

Tracy-
I am so sorry to hear about your Dad! and obviously it's fine to have all this put on hold indefinitely. I believe in the power of prayer, and will be praying for you and your family- I know you have been through cancer..has it returned?
Jim

Acknowledges he was feeling bad about his requests after learning the problems Tracey has been going through. He is completely sympathetic with Tracy’s recent loss.

That was Oct 3….I haven’t heard from Tracy since then, but figured she’s been tied up with family stuff and out of the business loo Frankly, if I lost my Dad I’d be out of commission for a long long time.

He comments on how he would actually feel and act if something like that happened to him. He completely understands the situation.

THEN, today (10/26), I noticed an Oct 15 ad by Tracy on kingsnake.com for a Retic, saying “email for pics” in her ad…

He is caught by surprise by the fact that business resumed for VPI, but he has yet to hear from them. What I can imagine is that with the number of e-mails, requests, questions, and animals to tend, more than likely something fell through the cracks; it happens to anyone.

I have now given up on purchasing anything else from VPI. Hopefully mine is an isolated situation, and others will have far better to report. If you're willing to stick it out, you are likely to be very pleased with the results.

He sounds disappointed by the way things turned around for him and not being able to buy that animal from VPI. Even though he still praises VPI and his animals.

This is the post in its entirety. We seem to be reading different things or a different intention by the poster, and that’s fine. My interpretation is summarized in his last sentence: If you're willing to stick it out, you are likely to be very pleased with the results. What I read there is: “if you are willing to wait you will be rewarded with the quality of the animals you get”. In this instance he was not willing to wait any longer. Is that bad?

The only things I read in his e-mail are praises, sympathy, and a bit of disappointment because not being able to buy the animal he wanted from VPI.

As a potential future buyer from VPI my conclusion is: they have great animals, they have a very busy schedule, if my plans are to buy from them and I’m patient, I’ll be rewarded with the quality of their animals.

Kind regards,

Not really

Lets be realistic Dan, if he was only showing praise, why then did it not happen when he purchased the animal earlier in the year. Not to mention any existing threads on Tracy. Here are a couple and this thread shouldn't have even be started:

Where is the complimentary post back then? Odd how this post came about shortly after his last unanswered email. It is whhat it is and you cannot deny it.

Then there is this one:

Doesnt sound like praise to me, sounds like he has made it clear that if you want to get a great animal, good luck having Tracy do her part of putting a deal together.

Then after compalining she wont answer he says this one:

That too is very far from praise and actually frustrated that he seen an ad posted shortly after she failed to return several emails from him.

Kelli is 100% right and Dan I think you are just missing a small piece of the equation thats all. I spoke with Tracy and she said the guy wasn't quite sure what he was really after but did want pictures and she was very apologetic.

In my opinion and especially what the origional post states and I have outlined, it is easily a complaint mmasked over with a few nice things becaiuse he didnt want to get slammed if she had some loyal followers here.

Not much more left on this thread anyway and it should have been posted on the above existing threads on Tracy.

Dan,
Your last post began:
Kelli,

It seems as though we are interpreting the initial post differently. That’s quite alright......

I like a lot of your posts, but maybe that last one might have best ended there? Some say "to-may-to", some say "to-mah-to" eh? Seems Tracy is likely to get this matter cleaned up anyway.

Jeff,

I agree 100%.

Seems Tracy is likely to get this matter cleaned up anyway.

And Jim, I don't have the slightest doubt that's what will actually happen.

There's one reason why the Barker's are who they are, and we all know why that is.

Take care guys!

Similar Experience

I, in no way, want to tarnish the Barkers reputation, they have great animals and have been in the business a long time but I have had a similar experience with communication with Tracy as Roesnake - about 3 years ago I inquired about purchasing a pair of het albino balls and making payments, which was graciously allowed, communication was great, I made the payments and received the snakes.

The problem was there was no receipt or paperwork included in the box. Of course I wanted a receipt to document the snakes origin and genetics in case I ever needed to sell them in the future. I also need a receipt for tax purposes. I emailed Tracy and she said she would "mail it right out", well after about 6 months of emails and promises that she would be "mailing it right out", nothing ever came and I gave up asking.

I am sure that they are busy as heck but this did leave me with a bad impression about VPI and may end up costing me money if I ever need to sell these snakes since I have no documentation on them.

Perhaps the Barkers need to hire a secretary to handle some of the details and communication?? Other than not getting the paperwork my experience with VPI was positive.

My disappointment is simply with the customer service. I responded to an ad....our communications spanned a period of almost 2 and a half months...and we're still nowhere.

I have always been hesitant to post my dealings with VPI because I'm a small time breeder and they are big time breeders. But I'm going to do so now. About 4 years ago, I decided to purchase an Albino Ball Python from VPI. We agreed on a price and I was to be sent 1.0 albino and 0.2 adult females to breed him to. All questions were answered in a timely manner. Once payment was made (CC), however, communications stalled. I called and left several messages and sent numerous emails. I had also explained that I was moving back to Florida (I was in Texas at the time) and we needed to get the animals shipped quickly. I spoke with Tracy on a Friday and she said the animals would be shipped Monday for a Tuesday delivery. They never arrived. Time was now getting critical because we were moving in a week. I called and spoke with Dave. He said there was an illness (or death) in the family that she was attending. The animals were then shipped after I explained (again) we were moving. I finally picked up the animals. They looked great, except there was only one female. I sent 2-3 emails asking about the second female and received no replies. Given the communications breakdown thus far, I gave up on the second female (back then they were still only $100). The new female I did receive refused to eat. I sent Tracy at least two emails about her feeding habits and she replied to both. What bothered me about my interactions was the lack of communications after I paid for my animals and of course, missing one female. My albino purchase was at a time when they were going for 5K each (hatchlings) so the purchase was not a small-time deal. I expected more but got less.
