In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Face Book

I joined a local facebook buy and sell page. Holy meth addicts batman!

Joe I have found that for local buying and selling, Next-door is a good group. Plus you get info about your community.

I'm on that also. I was the first person in my area to get Next door minus some admins. I used it to get back one of my cats that escaped and also was able to reunite someone with their dog with it. Another nice thing about it is, If someone is difficult they are pretty much ostracized.

I am gradually looking around, as fb can be overwhelming. Of course the first few weeks I just visited reptile groups while trying to learn my way around and learn how fb works, which I am still learning. Now I am looking at and joining other groups. It is amazing. There is a group just for people who own chihuahuas! There are also local groups and I joined one of those and hope to meet some of those people irl.
Found a funny group Hoodcoonery and enjoy most of their stuff. They have an off beat sense of humor just like I do.

I have a funny and cool story. I was on a Boxer Dog Forum many years ago. The owner/admin was having some problems and I offered to help her. The forum was kinda cluttered in setup and graphics messed up.

Got it all fixed up and stayed on as a background admin. I have ran several boards and decided I did not want the daily crap (ask webslave) of running it.

Along comes facebook. One night I had nothing to do and decided to see if the owner had a FB page. She did! I looked through pictures and she has her dogs in the down town area of my hometown!

She lives walking distance from me, lol. I didnt know if she lived in Florida, Texas or Boston till then.

I've repaired a phone for her, fixed her house heater once, she came over multiple times to feed and let dogs out when I had to leave town once.

She is a kindergarten teacher now and also a part time vet tech. We both post pictures on FB getting caught at railroad track by our houses. We go over opposite directions each day, lol.

That is a great story Joe!

I have met some truly thoughtful intelligent group leaders- admins and mods- on fb. People who take the time to think over both sides of any disagreement, and who give thought to the future implications of decisions they might make. I have also met some really, really unimaginative people who somehow became admins, I can only surmise, to feed their own power hungry delusions of grandeur.

I feel like I've been spoiled here for many years by the quality of the mods and admin. While for the most part that has been a positive experience, allowing me to be me, the downside has been the sense of shock I have felt when seeing less qualified people act out their power fantasies on an innocent membership in some of the fb groups I look in on.

It is actually reaching the level of entertainment for many in the group. The admin in question is really working herself into a tizzy and spends a huge amount of time banning people and 'muting' them. She actually turned off all commenting for the entire group so that she could go to church, and turned it back on when she returned. Apparently God did not gift her with any wisdom while she was in His house because she still seems headed for a stroke. She is being teased for her authoritarian manner, and simply bans the teasers.

Sounds like the assimilation process is proceeding normally!

That's why I can't stand Farcebook! I also feel spoiled by the mods and admin here, that are intelligent and fair. I just have very low tolerance for the antics over there.

I am currently watching reruns of Star Trek Next Gen which I do every few years. I feel like parts of fb are like undiscovered planets with strange life forms where communication is not possible and without it great harm is possible.

This is not a judgment of everything over there, some places are relatively sane and a few (the bicycling forums for instance) are just delightful. Maybe it is like that childhood poem 'When they were good they were very very good, and when they were bad they were horrid'.

The latest from the strange planet where no one can respond while the admin is in church: There is currently only 1 admin (lol wonder why they can't get more) and she has decided that she will review every.single.post. from now on. Unlike Lieutenant Data who can work 24/7, I'm thinking lack of sleep is going to turn her into a bigger witch than she already is. Fortunately I can beam off her planet with just a few taps of my keyboard.

I am only a member of 3 reptile related boards on fb. It has been my great good fortune that all 3 are members of this solar system. Of course I am used to the best here on Fauna, but they are good. Sometimes they do stuff that makes me scratch my head a little and wonder, but at least I can communicate.

Any critical thoughts I might have had are seen with an entirely different set of eyes now, after spending significant time on the planet where no one can respond while the admin is in church. I can see the points of view of the 3 reptile boards and maybe not agree 100% every time, but it is not like the strange planet full of alien life forms and the raptor admin where I can only, as the young people say, SMH.

I think some of the worst drama and back biting I have ever seen on facebook and youtube are truck drivers. A couple years ago I got into watching them because my dad had been a truck driver. These guys are worse than little old ladies who have nothing to do but gossip. If you drive an automatic then your not a real truck driver, If you work for this company your not a real truck driver. I have watched video's of them video a rookie who's who's having a hard time backing in and make fun of them instead of getting out and helping the poor kid. Then all his buddies chime in and dog the kid for working for X company and how he should just hang it up and stock groceries and stuff. A lot of them use Zello which is like a phone/walkie talkie app. They will record each other and wait for a "gotcha" moment then post the audio for all to hear.

Face book is down right now. I guess I'm surprised that something so large could crash, I just thought there would be plenty of backups, but I guess all technology is subject to glitches.

It was affecting a variety of their services. Facebook itself. Messenger. WhatsApp. Instagram.

I do not know if they revealed the source of the issues, but yesterday when the outages were at their worst, they had been dodging any sort of clarity aside from stating it was not due to a DDOS attack.

I am still seeing some residual issues on Facebook itself with disappearing/reappearing content, incomplete, temporary, or failed execution of admin functions, and other glitches. Messenger seems fine now and was getting its act together last night. WhatsApp was fine last night after a while, as it still allowed me to have my nightly videoconferences in the early evening, but photo and video file sending took longer to get restored. Instagram and all of the "aggregator" sites and applications that feed off of IG came back while I was doing searches for content related to mine last night.

These are my user experiences and I am by no means a wizard at this stuff, so I am sure there were more problems I did not run into based on my limited use case. I heard it really messed up some people who tried to log out and log in again, so I am glad I did not attempt that. While email is my standard for dealing with the volume of serious animal discussions I have, I use Messenger and conventional texts for the faster interactions I have with some friends and I use WhatsApp to have real-time video interactions with a couple of key family members when we are unable to be together at times. Outages are less than fun.

I use WhatsApp to have real-time video interactions

Is there a site where I could learn more about that? My son, his wife, and my grand baby are leaving in a few months to move across the country and I'd love to see them on video.

You only need to download the WhatsApp app/program from your operating system's app store (in my case, Google Play since my phone's OS is Android; for iPhones, I assume it is called some sort of app store for iOS). Search for the app. Download and install. Make sure the person on the other end you wish to talk to does the same. Then you can video-call each other if the connection strength is adequate. It is useful for being able to see and speak to loved ones even if they have differing phones/platforms.

There is definitely some background weirdness going on in fb, have had a couple of friend requests from people completely not connected with any groups I am interested in, who appear to not be compatible with me (the last one appears to want to talk about marriage, I can only imagine why someone would send such requests to total strangers).

I don't know how others process friend requests, and in general I love people, but I am somewhat puzzled by requests from people totally unrelated to any interests of mine.
