• Responding to email notices you receive.
    **************************************************
In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    Addendum: 01/10/2026
    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

FaunaClassifieds upgrade now in progress

I just tried to look at the membership table, to see if there was any mention of tags (wasn't necessarily expecting it to have been updated yet)...this is the message I got:
hhmoore, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.

Yeah, something a bit more devilish would be cool

I thought it was a Dragon, but I'm good with it like it is.

Well, I thought I disabled them all...
I don't get emails for the "friends" requests, but I still get message notifications. Hopefully there is a way to shut that off, and I just haven't found it yet. If not, I'll have to change the last line of my signature to "No, I won't be your friend - please don't ask".

Again, to the friends that have sent requests to me: no offense, and nothing personal, I just don't want to utilize that option.

LOL.. I was just thinking we might have you welcome and be in the friends list of all new registrations. Just like myspace. To make sure all know the features and benefits of the site. You can be fauna's "Tom".

Dennis H - interesting idea...I had no idea you were plotting the downfall of this site, lol. And who the hell is Tom?

Tom automatically appears in everyone's myspace friends list when you register there. We could set it up the same here. After someone registers the system automatically sends them a private message stating, Harald wants to be your friend! :D

Patience, guys - a new one is being worked up by Maggie.
A more demonic ID for you hellions...hellraisers...hellcats(female members only, of course). What DO you call yourselves?

Wonderful - should be great fun for everybody involved. Sign me right up for THAT :>Puke<:
Might as well start the pool now on how many contacts it takes to reach meltdown - I'd go in for $10 right now, but it wouldn't exactly be fair.

Rich, I think the new homepage looks great. The recent classifieds laid out on the page may drive that area. I just have to remember to go there. When you click on fauna's logo you go straight to the forums and the only link that I can find is on the bottom of the page. Maybe something tiered at the top for both sections? Fauna Homepage and Fauna Forums.

Thanks. Still working on that as I find time. My programmer just threw it out there to get something on it. I did make some changes on it yesterday, trying to get my feet wet. Come to find out that there is a server issue with the text links for the featured sites section. They don't show up in IE but do in FireFox. Got my server guy looking into it now.

Anyway, expect it to change as I dig deeper into it and learn the ropes.

The Quick Reply box is gone...it was here for a while after the upgrade. Not a huge deal, and it may well have been intentional...I'll learn to deal with it

Yes, I took it out. Actually did so trying to troubleshoot another problem. For some reason the threads aren't displaying a "related threads" section like they should. This feature makes it easy to cross reference related threads about the topic matter in the currently viewed thread. It's a bit of a hit on the server doing that, but I think it is valuable enough to tolerate that hit.

Do many of you use that quick reply feature? It does have a drawback in that it screws up the optional threaded display (if anyone actually uses that feature).

I use it, not here because I don't post much here. But on the other site (cs.com) I use it quite frequently, if I posted here as much, I would use it. Did that make sense?

I don't know....CAN you edit tags placed by other posters?

Any registered member can create tags in any thread. However only paid memberships can delete a tag that is in a thread that THEY created. Mods can add or delete at will, of course. And there is a screen in the admin section where I can review all tags created and delete any that appear to be inappropriate.

There is another tagging feature that I just implemented last night.

On the BOI, there are now required tags as a prefix for any newly created thread that indicate the following:
  • [Good Guy]
  • [Bad Guy]
  • [Inquiry]
  • [Info]

And in the classifieds sections, I have put in the following thread prefix tags:
  • [For Sale]
  • [Wanted]
  • [Trade]

Hopefully this will help keep things more organized in those particular sections. One neat feature that might come in handy with these prefex tags is that once those tags have had a chance to be more heavily utilized, you can set up a filter for viewing a classified forum that will limit the display to ONLY those threads with the tag prefix that you select. So if you only wanted to look at the FOR SALE threads, you could filter out all of the rest of them.

Now as for people actually LIKING that feature, well that's another story, I guess........

I don't use it that much. It doesn't matter to me. It is just as easy to hit post reply or quote someone to reply. I don't use the threaded display either.

I've seen the new tags, and I really like them. I also like the filter idea as well. So far I like most of the upgrades, and I like the fact that you have a way to monitor tags so that you can keep the abuse minimal.

I don't use the "threaded display" option at all....but I can live without the quick reply button too, not a big deal. So many other new toys, I hardly miss it. :D

And I really like the new tags too!

I'm still finding new "toys" to play with- LOL!

I'm sitting here on my laptop, supposedly avidly listening to the stimulating conversation (Uh huh, sure I am). Y'know if I counted all the teeth the rest of the folks here have I might wind up with a full set... :)

I've played with the little avatar demon again as he's the only one I have on this machine. He looks much better at 60x60, Rich, so if you can resize him, try him out in a test post or something. I believe you can do that yourself even in MS Paint, that's why I sent you the original file so you could make changes if you wanted to. I would rename it before you save so you don't overwrite the original as I can't send it to you right now.

I've made a pencil drawing one and a colored pencil drawing type, like Seamus' avatar and he looks pretty cool that way too. Using an old version of Photoshop on this machine, so can't check out the 'toon actions just yet.

Edit: And, I posted this in the wrong thread--DUH!

A MINOR note, Rich.
When I log in on the home page, it brings me back to the home page seemingly not logged in (no messages, new posts, etc). I say seemingly because if I then go to the forums, my normal screen appears and it is business as usual. From there, I can go back to the mainpage (via the address bar, not the back button) and all is as it should be.

Not a big deal, as I leave myself logged on at home, so I don't have to deal with it there...but since the upgrade, it has happened every time I have logged in from a different machine.
