In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

I love feed stores, there is something 'country' about them, and since products are sold often in larger quantities, there can be significant savings as well, since the 40 or 50 lb. sacks are not usually priced out at Petco prices.

Too, they sell insecticides to farmers, and the prices are unbelievably cheap compared to the sprays sold in petstores; permethrin 10% was $13/pint and can easily (but carefully) be diluted into a huge amount of spray, a little at a time, and put into a sprayer. Permethrin is good for all kinds of insects and is the active ingredient in some commercial lice preparations.

Many feed stores are family or owner run, and there is generally better service than at the pet superstores.

The feed stores in my town south of Houston did not have what I wanted, so I decided to visit Quality Feeds in downtown Houston based on a website description and I'm glad I did.

It is very plain, no fancy aisles, prices generally in Magic Marker on the item or bag; no air conditioning, your usual bags of feed stacked up everywhere. Liniments, sprays and other large animal products on the shelves, and jars of local honey on the counter.

The owner himself immediately helped me; and he had in stock one kind of bedding I wanted to use. His assistant loaded my purchase into my car.
Unlike the other stores, he told me he would order anything he could get if I wanted to try some other kinds of bedding, so I asked him to order some of the woodchip and pelleted paper bedding so I can see how those work.

I had inquired earlier by email if he had any types of bedding I was seeking so he had my email address on hand, and by the time I got home I had an email waiting for me thanking me for my business.

Anyway, I thought I would write just to say that in this age of supermarket pet discount stores, I think there is very much a place still for the small owner run store. I appreciate the little things like having my purchases put in my car, and definitely appreciate responsive sellers who will go out of their way to help.

His website description along with a map of the area complete with directions on his website is what got me to the store the first time; and of course his customer service is what will keep me as his customer in the future.

Petco may be glitzy and stylish, but this store gets my business because after all, customer service is what really counts.

I agree COMPLETELY, Lucille!! I go to feed stores anyway to supply my poultry and horses and such, but I still could go to one of the "big chain" stores and get what I need. Instead, I go to the littlest, "hometowniest" store around....located in the next town over from me (I think the population of the town is under 300) and get everything I can there. Same deal....they are friendly, offer to help with anything and everything, will try to order any oddities I may be looking for, load all of my feed for me, and even offer fresh hot coffee and on Fridays even popcorn for FREE, lol.........who does THAT anymore??? And they greet me by NAME, and the kids by their names....ask about the family and critters.....sounds kinda corny, but it's just a "homey" feeling, lol.

I walked in one day about a year ago, and the guy who usually loads my feed (who is friendly, but up to this point very quiet and kinda shy) came up to me right away, and said, "I know right where you live!" Now anywhere but Iowa, this would inspire most people to get out their mace and call 911.....but I laughed and asked him how he knew.....he said he lived about a mile and a half from me, and he could hear my Bloodhound "sing" sometimes! He said he asked neighbors, and it didn't take him long to figure out who owned the only Bloodhound for miles around, lol. I apologised, and asked if it bothered him, and he just said "Oh, no.....it just scared the hell out of me for the first couple months ya lived out there, thought the hounds were comin' to get me!"

Yep....ya can't beat it. :)
