In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Feedback wanted from the members on a livestock section.

I think it might be worth a try, but make it a broad classification.
For instance an all inclusive "homesteading" forum, or whatever it would be called, which would deal with any related subject matter. The various aspects of raising livestock, farming/gardening, canning and food preservation, alternative home energy sources, general preparedness, etc.
Then have a child forum to act as a classifieds section for anything related to the homesteading forum, be it livestock, dehydrators, generators, or what have you.

I'm afraid limiting it to a livestock forum/classified may limit participation to much.

I actually would like to have a homesteading forum and feel like I would have a lot to contribute~ but I wouldn't be interested in sitting around talking to myself. I get to do plenty of that while I'm scooping out the barn! A couple hours of that and you've got to really like the guy your talking to.

When you say "general preparedness", are you talking about a somewhat survival oriented slant towards the discussions? That actually might be popular based on the times we are going through..

Yes, that was what I was referring to. Basically everything that would be included under the "homesteading" label would also fall under the survivalist category. Whether it be putting up a chicken coop, installing a 1000 gallon underground diesel tank for a generator, how to can beans, or the best way to store ammunition stockpiles, it has several overlapping areas of interest.

I've believed for years that the time is coming when you better possess this sort of knowledge and be able to take care of yourself. Considering the current state of things, we are getting ever nearer to that point. The time is coming in this country that people who depend solely on the grocery store for their daily bread, and have little if any means to defend or provide for themselves, will be in a seriously precarious position from which many will not make it through.

Yeah, I actually had a forum of that nature when I had my ArmsLocker.com forum and it was the most popular (comparatively speaking) of the forums on that site. But bear in mind, that sort of forum attracts an awful lot of chaff to have to dig through in order to get to the wheat.

I agree.

So, Dennis, what's your conclusion about this suggestion?

Less than twenty people commented on the idea with about 550 views.

I sure would hate to use up real estate space only to have it disappear from lack of participation and waste your time.

I would state that it would need to be broader section such as what Clay stated for it to even have a chance at success. Even with such a diverse section, I don't know how much the existing member base would contribute. Doesn't look like it would be much but with the extended topic such as Homesteading it most certainly would be better than my original suggestion of livestock. May even bring in new members with it.

I'm also very interested and would participate in the topics that Clay brought forward. I do so elsewhere. My original thought on just livestock was that it would be closer to the interests of members that are here. Although there may be more here interested in homesteading/ survivalist discussions and just noted the topic of this thread as livestock and passed it by.

If I were you and wanted to gauge the possible success by what's posted here, It would be to shelf the idea for now. I wouldn't be to encouraged to go forward with the few of us that have responded.

Homesteading, I like it but that doesn't necessary mean that it is going to bring participation from others. Although, sometimes it only takes a couple of people to drive traffic to a topic and a few people could make it a very active forum.

Honestly, a forum entitled "Homesteading" wouldn't get much interest from me at all, as it sounds more targeted towards something like they used to do in the old West with the migration from the east of "settlers". So I think of covered wagons and cattle drives. :shrug01: And it also brings to mind the "homestead exemption" for my property taxes, which really doesn't sound like very exciting topic matter to me.

So my opinion is that if you want to pursue this, the forum title and description has to make it sound interesting enough to get people to even drop in to take a look around. The focus can be made broader to reach a wider audience, but I think the billboard is still going to need some work. Perhaps something related to "survivalism" but couched in terms such as "living off the land", or something of that nature.

call it the 'farm survival guide' or 'better living through fauna'

no, I am just joking.

I was one of those 'viewers that didn't post', honestly, I might read some items on that forum but probably wouldn't have anything to contribute; living in a big city apartment, the majority wouldn't apply in my situation - but I do like reading up on what to do for the eventual anarchy that envelopes this nation when we finally have had enough of this government...
that or the inevitable zombie apocalypse.
:D

What was it called on ArmsLocker?

Heck, I don't remember, but it was pretty directly targeted towards survivalism during TEOLAWKI (The End Of Life As We Know It). I think here it would be more related to self sufficiency rather than anything really hardcore like building impregnable bomb shelters stocked with a year's supply of MREs.

id post in a "survivalist" type thread, or the TEOLAWKI, but livestock? not so much.

and a years supply of MREs? sign me up Rich ;)

Well, if people want such a forum, this thread is the place to let me know.....

that or the inevitable zombie apocalypse.
:D

This is what my fiancee, friends and I have been calling "it" for years now ... My friend actually named his band IZA ("Inevitable Zombie Apocalypse"). We're not even sure where the term came from but we use it all the time ...

I recently heard it called "Bugging Out" as well ...

I would definitely have interest in a farming/survivalism/livestock forum.

I think if the forum topic and description expressed a wide focus encompassing such things as survivalism and government intrusions on our freedoms, it would actually be quite popular, based on what I see in other forums here.

Do you want to take a shot at a title and description, Dennis and we'll give it a shot? This was your idea, so I would rather you take the lead on this.

That could be dangerous ... I could write entire novels' worth of forum rants on that subject :dgrin:

(It is extremely topical, though, especially for this community ...)

I think I could give you a run for your money in the RANTS category myself....
