In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Okay, I'm picking up my first snake next weekend and I'm not sure what to do about feeding. It seems like so many people have different solutions. A lot of people breed their own, many have standing orders with companies, and I imagine a good amount of you just buy frozen ones from your local pet store. I'm not sure what other options there are, but I'm wondering what people seem to think is the best way. My local reptile store breeds their own rats and mice, then they sell them along with using them for their own snakes.

How worried should I be about parasites and stuff? Would it be totally weird to go in and interview them about what they do to ensure their mice stay healthy (don't have parasites and stuff)? How much is a standard price for mice? This store tends to be on the higher price end with their animals so I'm worried about paying too much for their mice.

I think my herpetological society does a sort of monthly order from a supplier, has anyone had experience with how this works? Would this be how I'd want to go? I'm worried about how ridiculous shipping would cost feeding just one snake- I feel like I might end up paying more for shipping than I'd be paying for the actual mice since I'm not ordering much.

Are there other ways to go? I'm just worried about getting the healthiest possible food for the best price. If there's any other good options out there that I didn't think of, I'd love to hear!

Back when I only had one snake I mail ordered mine frozen off the internet. Usually about 50 at a time (maybe more if I was ordering pinkies) and just kept them in my freezer until they were needed. The vacuum packed ones worked best since they kept longer. The local pet stores were too expensive.

If your local herp soc. orders on a regular basis I would go in with them... it's bound to be cheaper ordering in bulk. The best thing to do would be contact them to see how it works.

Now that I am up to 5 mice eating snakes I have found that it is cheaper to raise my own mice (I usually have two males and 4 females)... I even supply mice for my nephews snake for free since his parents lost their jobs. If I have extra (happens occasionally) I usually try to sell them locally.

i wouldnt suggest breeding unless your weekly pet store purchases are crazy expensive which with one snake they shouldnt be the case. what i used to do was just stock up on maybe a month or two's worth of frozen mice/rats. then take a trip back to petco or whatever when needed. hope that helped

Thanks! the local herp society meets on friday so I'll talk to them then. I think that means I won't actually get my order until the next meeting a month from now, but buying... what, four mice before then? that won't be a big deal. Thanks!
