In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

So, here I am, a Boa constrictor/Gecko enthusiast and every time I log in I see the link (## New Posts) and click it.

I gaze down the right column of the screen and see:

I want a filter to remove the animals I am not interested in.
I jokingly call Faunaclassifieds "Ballpythonclassifieds" to my wife. ;)

I love this site, but... pretty please?

Sorry, but something like that would require custom coding that I would have a tough time convincing myself was really necessary to implement.

You could just restrict people from selling ball pythons though... Hahaha

good one!

I wish it would load more than 200, I think I posted about that a few years back, the solution offered and what I do - log on more often.
:D

And with that would go a lot of the paid subscriptions to this site, including mine.

You could always just go to only the forums you want to see posts in. Newest are always listed first. :shrug01:

I was saying that in jest. Yeah more than 200 would also be nice.

That is a restriction put in place to try to control server loading. The larger a site is, and the more posts involved in a search function, the more likely that SOME restriction will be necessary to limit excessive server loading. Imagine if everyone could pull up an unlimited number of hits for each search they would do, say on something like "python". That would just bring the server to it's knees in a hurry.

200 seemed a logical compromise between ALL and NONE, I think. If you haven't found exactly what you are looking for after 200 hits with the search engine, perhaps you need to be more creative with your search technique.

And as April mentioned, if you find 200 returns for all new posts too restrictive of a limit, you just have to check in more often to keep from losing some that drop off because of the 200 cutoff. Besides, how many people would really want to have to wade through more than 200 new posts at a sitting anyway?

If you are looking for something specific, just use the search function of this site to try to zero in on it.

I know there have to be restrictions is to server limitations. I've done a fair bit of programming myself. I wasn't trying to ruffle any feathers, just ranting.

I actually like the search function on this site. Another site I am a member of switched from a search function like you have here to ask.com search and it is rather terrible. I hope that never happens to fauna.

Omg you know what I mean. I hate iphone typing.

Heck, as much as I am on the internet, I can't imagine doing this with some little handheld mobile device. Not only because of the typing issues, but man, looking at one of those small screens for a few hours at a time and I'd go blind in short order.

I'm about done with apple products altogether to be honest.

Is there a fauna mobile site in the future plans?

Not unless I ever decide to use a mobile device for my internet needs. Which isn't very likely. Sorry, I thought I made that pretty plain in my last post. So far, I just don't have any need pressing enough to want to access the internet with a little mobile device while I am away from my den.

So you see, if I were to implement such code to make this site more mobile friendly, I would not be able to test it, nor trouble shoot any problems members would run into. My programmer also indicated that he stays away from such devices and mods for his own websites, because of significant problems with vulnerabilities to hackers. I'm guessing (because I really have no interest in looking into it) that hacking is just in it's infancy with these devices as more and more apps get developed and used.

And there is another wrinkle concerning all this. Apparently all of the original developers to vBulletin abandoned ship a while back when Jelsoft was taken over by Internet Brands and the latest versions of this software are not well liked and have "issues". The original developers have started up their own company with a similar product, but of course the original company is slinging lawsuits at the new upstart instead of just letting the marketplace decide who has the best product.

This is an interesting read for anyone interested in this topic -> http://www.theadminzone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=103655

So options are limited for the future, with no crystal ball in sight. Maybe this site will hold up pretty much "as is" for the remainder of my retirement and as long as I retain an interest in this stuff. Or maybe not. Heck, I could wake up dead tomorrow and what would it matter then?

Time will tell, I guess.

If you manage to wake up dead tomorrow, please tell me your secret.

Hah! With all the talk of people shooting zombies, do you think I'm going to tell you if and when I've become one? Not very likely.....
