In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Hi, I'm planning on purchasing my first boa, and I was thinking of either getting a male caulker cay, a male hog island or either a male dumerils, have done alot of research on all of them, and can't exactly make up my mind, so I figured I'd find out what everyone here had to say about the good/bad of all three species. I'm looking for a boa that doesn't get as big as a red tail, but larger than a ball, and also one who has a good temperment because I have a 6-year old who loves to handle the snakes. I have owned a ball python for 7 years, and she has done great, but now I wanna get something a little bigger, so PLEASE post your comments or PM me and let me know what you think, THANKS, Linda.

For a pet, I would not suggest a Cay Caulker. First off they can be nervous babies and often have bad attitudes until their second year of life. The second reason is there are no many of them around. All Cay Caulkers need to be in breeding programs so we can have a larger captive population. A Hog Island is a better choice. Dumerils can be just as large as a colombian.
Pesonally I believe that the best choice for you would be a male Nicaraguan. They are small, hardy and usually calm snakes that do great in captivity. There are plenty of them available and they vary greatly in appearance.

I agree.. I was in the same position looking for my first snake. Thought about a caulker cay (which is also pretty expensive.). All the hogg Islands that I've seen minus Riobravo Reptiles, have been like a cross between the hogg island boa and something else. Plus they can sometimes be very nippy as well.

I opted and got a male Nicaraguan boa. He's the calmest guy on earth, only a few months, and have been the easiest thing to handle. Not to mention, he can take better temperature ranges than a red-tail could, and the particular one I have would eat a frozen/thawed mouse right out of my hand (this is based on personal experience, haven't talked to other nic owners.) Dumerilis are huge, just not as thick if you may. If you want a nic, but something bigger than a ball, I'd get a female. They tipically grow up to around 5 feet or so. Males are smaller, probably smaller than a ball python. whatever you decide, I know you won't regret=). Have fun! ! !

Hi, I'm glad I posted this here, haven't even thought about a nic, I'll do some research and see what I can find out with them. I'm gonna check the classifieds and see if I can find some for sale, if not, I guess I'll have to wait until the babies are born, I HATE WAITING!!!! Thanks for the info about them, like I said if I hadn't posted this here, I would have never known about them, you guys (and girls) are great!!! THANKS AGAIN!!! Linda. P.S. Any info anyone can give me on them, would be appreciated!!!

Basically they have the same care requirements as a Colombian and are more tolerant of temp fluctuations. They are becoming more popular because of new morphs(hypo, t + albino) and small size. They are just very neat little boas.

Well, I've been on the computer searching everywhere for info on them, and have read all I can find, and I think you all were right, they seem to be exactly what I'm looking for, not to big, and temperment is good, so then I went to the classifieds here and at KS and I couldn't find many, and the ones I did find were $250 for a male, and $150 for a female (both were high pink colored), and then I found a pair for sale, but not looking to breed, just wanna get one. After what I have read on them, I don't think it will matter if I get a male or a female, just gotta find one that has a good temperment, and is healthy, I know my son will be glad to add another snake to the house, he just loves them, I think when he grows up he is gonna have a house full of reptiles, who knows he may even breed them, just can't tell, Linda.
