In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

I know, I know, I'm late to the party, but I finally got a Kindle, a Paperwhite. It is amazing!! And there are sites that have tons of free books listed. Just a click, and it is in the Kindle.
You just touch the screen to turn the page. Amazing.
I've been reading less these days because I don't go to the mall where the bookstores are as much as I used to. Now I can get hundreds of books on my Kindle without leaving home. I'm going to be reading more :)

I just can't get too enthused about the idea of a device that pretty much only does one thing. If I had my heart set on a low-priced Kindle eReader, I would have opted for the 7" Fire HD and gotten a much more useful device. Even considering the increased battery life and a specialized display that makes it easier to read in direct sunlight, I just don't think there are any worthwhile advantages to the Paperwhite.

I love my Paperwhite - and I thought I would never turn away from paper books. I travel a lot, I can carry a library, and the battery life is amazing.

I also actually prefer a device that doesn't do everything - the Kindle lets me read books (and I have a few games on it) and doesn't try to persuade me to do anything else - and it doesn't do secret updates and change the rules on me while I'm not looking.

I'm with Lucille, I think it's a wonderful thing.

(Also I found the screen on the Fire, while great for watching movies, is actually not nearly as good for reading - lots of background reflection)

Having played with other people's dedicated eReaders, I was entirely unimpressed with their screens. I don't tend to do any reading in situations where there's enough harsh ambient light to give me any glare issues, so that selling point is lost on me. I guess it's also possible that my opinion is subconsciously skewed by my disdain for for such limited devices.

If I'm going to be doing any serious reading, I've gotten to the point where I really don't like holding something in my hands to do it. I use Adobe Digital Editions software on my PC so I can do my reading on a 20" LCD display.

Whether it be on my Windows PC or any given Android device, I always disable automatic updates. If a program or app isn't far enough out of date for me to notice any diminished functionality, I don't waste bandwidth on it. All the time I spent on slow, limited data connections has made me fairly frugal when it comes to downloading things that don't seem necessary. If it isn't broke, I'm not going to bother fixing it.

Everyone has their own preferences, and that's OK.
Today was too cold to do much outdoors so I spent some time in my cozy home on my favorite comfortable chair, blanket, feet up, kitty on the back of the chair near my shoulder, dog on lap, another dog near feet, reading a good novel on the Kindle.

You see, that's what I like - it feels like a book you can curl up with, rather than a computer you really should be doing some proper work on....

Glad you're having a comfortable day!

I have both 7" HD and a PaperWhite. I keep the paperwhite by my bed. I only read and get away from the internet. The HD is great for magazine and color pdf. Love both.

Sounds like my kind of day!

I've thought about getting a reading device for a few years now, but don't know if I will like getting away from paper books. I still subscribe to our local newspaper, because it seems weird to read it online. I'm old, and like the morning ritual of coffee, and reading the paper!

I read at night, before going to sleep. Has anyone noticed a problem sleeping from looking at a Kindle screen right before trying to sleep? That would be a deal-breaker for me. I shut off my phone and laptop a couple hours before going to bed, as the light is too stimulating.

If you're asking about the Kindle Paperwhite's screen - which is different than other multipurpose devices - it's apparently been designed in a way that's meant to be very eye-friendly.

Let your light shine

The Kindle Paperwhite builds on the best of the past and adds a number of new innovations. The improvement that is generating the most buzz is its built-in light.

Before the introduction of the first Kindle Paperwhite in 2012, readers had to use an external light source — the sun, a lamp, or a portable reading light. On a Kindle Paperwhite, however, the light is sandwiched between the layers of the screen and shines toward the surface of the e-ink display.

As a result, the light does not shine in your eyes as it does with a backlit device, such as a tablet or a smartphone. The result? Less eyestrain for you and an overall even distribution of light on the screen. The screen and light make reading in any lighting condition a pleasure.

Thanks for that info, Dan. It's good that they've designed the screen lighting to include night readers.
