    =====================

I am still waiting on my developer to finish up on the Classifieds Control Panel so I can use it to encourage members into becoming paying members. Google Adsense has become a real burden on the viewing of this site, but honestly it is the ONLY source of income now that keeps it afloat. I tried offering disabling the ads being viewed by paying members, but apparently that is not enough incentive. Quite frankly, Google Adsense has dropped down to where it barely brings in enough daily to match even a single paid member per day. But it still gets the bills paid. But at what cost?

So even without the classifieds control panel being complete, I believe I am going to have to disable those Google ads completely and likely disable some options here that have been free since going to the new platform. Like classified ad bumping, member name changes, and anything else I can use to encourage this site to be supported by the members instead of the Google Adsense ads.

But there is risk involved. I will not pay out of pocket for very long during this last ditch experimental effort. If I find that the membership does not want to support this site with memberships, then I cannot support your being able to post your classified ads here for free. No, I am not intending to start charging for your posting ads here. I will just shut the site down and that will be it. I will be done with FaunaClassifieds. I certainly don't need this, and can live the rest of my life just fine without it. If I see that no one else really wants it to survive neither, then so be it. It goes away and you all can just go elsewhere to advertise your animals and merchandise.

Not sure when this will take place, and I don't intend to give any further warning concerning the disabling of the Google Adsense. Just as there probably won't be any warning if I decide to close down this site. You will just come here and there will be some sort of message that the site is gone, and you have a nice day.

I have been trying to make a go of this site for a very long time. And quite frankly, I am just tired of trying. I had hoped that enough people would be willing to help me help you all have a free outlet to offer your stuff for sale. But every year I see less and less people coming to this site, much less supporting it financially. That is fine. I tried. I retired the SerpenCo business about 14 years ago, so retiring out of this business completely is not that big if a step for me, nor will it be especially painful to do. When I was in Thailand, I did not check in here for three weeks. I didn't miss it even a little bit. So if you all want it to remain, it will be in your hands. I really don't care either way.

    =====================
Some people have indicated that finding the method to contribute is rather difficult. And I have to admit, that it is not all that obvious. So to help, here is a thread to help as a quide. How to become a contributing member of FaunaClassifieds.

And for the record, I will be shutting down the Google Adsense ads on January 1, 2025.

In response to the message about the costs associated with running the forum... Have you considered a free hosting service, like ProBoards?

Well, I dunno. A backup of this site creates a file that is 280 gigabytes. I doubt any free hosting service would find that acceptable. Plus I have a natural reluctance towards anything claiming to be free when it comes to the internet in general and hosting in particular. There are usually always strings attached somewhere.

Rich, yes 280GB is a lot. I wouldn't trust any "free" hosting service either. Sucks to hear about less people coming here. My first online tortoise purchase was through here so would hate to see this site go. If you need members to pay to post their FOR SALE ads I don't see why that wouldn't be a "last ditch effort" instead of just dropping the ball surprisingly one day.

Are we really off from the # of paid members needed to keep the site active without Google Ads?

I understand the reluctancy, but it couldn't hurt to check them out, right? The site I linked to doesn't have caps on bandwidth, forum size, amount of members, etc. As far as I could tell, the site I linked to makes their money by offering a paid version that comes with more features and no ads.

Well, I just recently went through a server change as well as a platform change for this site, and it is not something to be taken lightly. A pretty reasonable comparison is volunteering for a week of daily root canals. o_O

I understand. I was just trying to help. ProBoards seems pretty legit, and they're free. I just figured it would be better than shutting down the site completely.

Rich, are we really off from the # of paid members needed to keep the site active without Google Ads?

If we know what the goal is we can aim for that prior to shutting down. It'll be nicer to know we set a goal, fell short and this site goes away versus opening up the browser one day and not know why it disappeared (we do but for the sake of the argument).

Frankly, till this thread I did not know about membership(s). I have been posting threads with 10s thousands total views and also posting sale ads. Just didn't know. Perhaps a remedial education post from Rich about membership, ads, benefits, and goals (as above noted) would help punch the reset button for participants on the site.

This would be difficult to quantify. For instance, there are 148 current Contributor level members at this moment. No realistic way of telling how many became Contributors before the platform changeover, much less the last time they visited this site. Nor if they will be renewing. But if looking for a ballpark figure, roughly I would have to say that if I had just one Contributor level member every day to compensate for getting rid of the Google ads, then that would mean I would be seeing 365 Contributor level members at any time. Of course, there are a lot of holes in that theory. One Endowment level member would be the equivalent of 10 Contributor level members financially. I NEVER look at such facts that closely. I rely more on gut feeling about how things are going here. And honestly, this new platform pulled a lot of info I could look at and is no longer available for me. I used to be able to generate reports of data that would show me how many registered members logged in each day over a period of time to see how deeply stats were dipping. How many post and new threads were made. If such data exists in this platform, I have not stumbled onto it yet. So yeah, I am just winging it, most based on how often I see a PayPal notice come in that a payment has been received from a member. Which honestly, lately, has been few and far between. Except the blip in the radar when I posted that notice and in this thread. So it did catch the attention of some people who apparently would rather not see FaunaClassifieds go away.

But just for giggles...

As a rough figure for calculations, let's say the single expense of the server costs me $4,000 per year. 365 Contributor level members per year would mean around $9,000 per year revenue. Obviously I am not going to get wealthy with this. Not even making a minimum wage, now am I? Honestly, maybe it is best I don't try to quantify this, as it may just discourage me even further. When things are going smoothly, I am OK just letting this site run itself with the moderators volunteering to do most of the member management duties. But when server problems crop up or I suddenly get a large helping of crap from one or more members over something, well, the pay really sucks then. Honestly, I have no idea why I didn't just chuck this all when the Board of Inquiry was extremely active and I got monstrous loads of crap nearly every day. It really WAS a lot to have to put up with.

Heck, how do I factor in even such things as tax breaks I get for deductions I have for things like my internet service and the occasional new computer? Or the fact that it does give me something of interest to do in my later years. I guess I have to admit that my feelings one way or another about how much of me I am still willing to give running this site are more the deciding factor. Paying members tells ME that a lot of people appreciate this site and my keeping it running, and are willing to help keep it running. When those numbers drop way down, well, how else should I interpret that situation?

Sorry, really no black and white answers to your questions. It is all just infinite shades of gray.

I am hoping the Classifieds Control Panel will be finished sometime soon. And is in such a form that it can be utilized as a realistic incentive for members to become paying members. Bear in mind that this new platform is new to me too. The admin section is HUGELY more complicated than the vBulletin platform. And it is becoming painfully obvious to me that there is a lot of truth in the saying "you can't teach and old dog new tricks."

I get it. I've run websites, have been a global mod on huge message boards, and have also run a number of groups on various forms of social media. The crap you have to deal with in a position like that definitely makes you question whether it's worth it or not. There's no denying that.

I understand switching platforms is a nightmare. But in the long run it can save a lot of money (and also time/frustration). It would allow for the site to not require any funding from google ads or paying members. Support would be provided by the host, so no need to keep someone on the payroll for IT, either.

If you do decide that you no longer want to run the site, how would you feel about handing the reigns off to someone else, instead of just shutting it down? Or how would you feel about a volunteer helping you move the site to a free platform? Thus sparing you the trouble of volunteering for a week of root canals, and also taking a lot of the frustration off of your plate? 🙂

On a side note, have you considered putting a feature on the site that can allow members to make alacart donations? I'm disabled/poor af, so I can't justify a paid membership.., But I would definitely be willing to make the occasional à la carte donation. Others may be in similar positions.

I'll watch for your post announcement that the Classifieds Control Panel is up and running.
Question: if I understand correctly, membership is only payable via PayPal ?
If that is the only route for payment I suspect it would preclude a number of people joining (myself included).
Thanks.

Martin why would PayPal not be a viable option? I am curious. They are a pretty reputable 3rd party online payment system that I have used for over a decade for sending and receive payments.

Perhaps I did not use best wording. I have no pros or cons about PayPal. That was more of a personal statement: "I just don't use PayPal. I use Zelle". However, I do peruse quite a few ads every week ... and I would say many people do not accept PayPal. Some of the keepers accept virtually every method of online payment. Some do not accept any online payment. I just think Rich could more easily enroll members with multiple online payment systems. But that's his choice. I think I also read on one of the threads that he does not want checks ... which is acceptable to me ... it's his business. Bank cashier's checks are quite reliable and easy to obtain, as are USPS money orders.
Anyway, PayPal is fine ... I just don't use that system. Thanks.

I did look into a couple of alternate online payment vehicles, but they have become very intrusive in the signup process they require. So I did not complete any of them.

That being said, yes, I will accept checks or money orders mailed to me, but not for anything less than $100 to make it worthwhile for me to run to the bank with it. Please consider this as a "convenience threshold".

I have been using PayPal for quite a long time now and really have not had any issues with them. Are they perfect? Of course not. But as with most business entities, if you don't give them problems, they normally do not give you any in return. So YMMV.

Not to belabor the convo ... Zelle has no onerous requirements. Just sign up online with your bank and the money transfer is completed within a minute. No fees. Your phone number and/or email address are your transfer accounts. I use Zelle for both my business and personal accounts.

The only other payment processors native in this message board app are the following
  • Braintree
  • Stripe
  • 2Checkout

I never heard of any of those three, and am reluctant to give out my financial info in order to set up accounts with them.

I am checking with my developer to see if any payment processor can be added. But honestly, I will be VERY particular about what sort of identifying info I provide to anyone.
